If Stan is playing a NBA game, then he needs players which have the same skill sets (NOT abilities, but collegiate skill sets) to play it.

The question is how does a team play without player(s) at the center position who can play MAC ball and above for 40 minutes?

Are will we need to simply outshoot our opponents?

Otherwise, what scheme changes need to be made?

Starts with defensively placing Randle the tallest player who can block shots (10 per game in HS) at the rim, not straying from it and not fouling. Will sharply reduce opponents scoring inside, and will force more opponent three pointers that that EMU players must defend against.

Makes sense. Purely a defensive rim protector. If he defends the rim, Emoni, Noal and Tyson will get the points.

I like Super’s idea to put Emoni in the center position. For all the detractors of this idea, Emoni is currently leading the team in both rebounds (6.3/game) and blocked shots (0.5/game). Emoni seems best suited to be our needed tall athletic shot blocker at cehter. Randle still feels like he is developing, but should be able to spell Emoni for 7 min/game… so I am with Super on this 07-coffee3

Do you really think someone weighing 180 LBs can guard someone at 230-240 in the post? Did you watch the last game where Geeter got backed down. I suspect Emoni would foul out in 5 minutes if he played center.

Hmmmm, definitely very good points… but maybe if it is part of an overall defensive scheme it would work. The threat of Emoni blocking the shot is there, so they will tend to back him down instead, which is a slow process, at which time someone comes to help on defense…. I don’t know but something needs to be done defensively. What are your thoughts?

It's better than what we have now. And I didn't say right away but do it when conferences play starts. Train him for a month first. At 18 he should be putting on weight soon anyway. 07-coffee3

Maybe yes, maybe no. Think of Chris Sale, MLB pitcher. He came to the White Sox out of college, rail thin and I think he is STILL rail thin. I doubt JaQuan Hart gained weight, but we will never know.

I doubt Emoni will ever be say 215 or so.

Replay the UCSD game and witness Emoni conceding a layup to a small guard with no effort to block it. He is not interested in being a shot-blocker and as Lucky mentioned, he simply does not have the body to play the five position.

Heath tried Randle against UCSD but he clearly is NOT ready for prime time. He looked lost and he suffers from the same bulk problems that Emoni has.

The last three NCAA champions Kansas, Baylor and Virginia did not have a rim-protecting center. They did, however, play very good defense. They moved their feet, helped when their teammate got beat off the dribble and crashed the boards. Thats effort I don't see from us right now.

Lovejoy started instead of Billingsley and Rice has made an appearance. At least Stan is trying to shake it up.

Kansas had two good forward, both bigger than ours. David McCormack and Jalen Wilson.

RE: Thanksgiving Game Week Men's Basketball - emdypo - 11-30-2022 07:44 PM

This is a bad basketball team. The defense is slow to rotate, and they fail to box out half the time. On offense it's poor shot selection when they aren't turning the ball over, which is frequently. Call it coaching, effort, decision making, whatever you want to blame it on. No more excuses, this team is just bad. They are beat to every loose ball, the talent is there but something is missing. It's gonna be a long season, they look like they are getting worse.

I was merely speaking to heretofore mentioned topic of shot blocking. The guys you mentioned were not exactly rim protectors. Yet you are correct, they are longer than the guys we currently play.

I'm going to disagree. But please give me some time to find a single fault with what you posted. At first glance, I cannot, you kind of summed it up.

First response, Emoni leads the team in blocked shots.
Second response, the whole team watches layups go in. This is NOT exclusive to Emoni.

Being the EMU team leader of blocked shots is an awfully unremarkable distinction for the tallest player on the roster with FOUR in SEVEN contests. You are correct, the rest of the team has played very passive defense as well. For all I know, Heath may be on-board with him not contesting layups so as to avoid foul trouble. I merely made an observation about his game with respect to him playing center.

Emoni is NOT a center. Discussion of putting him there just because he is tall is rubbish. You can solve one problem by creating another problem.

Good lord. Emoni at center is one of the most ridiculous suggestions I have seen in quite some time. It points to a serious lack of basketball understanding, I think we just need to put that idea to bed and quickly move on.

Yeah, if Emoni played center against UofM, Hunter might have broken one of his arms in the first half, and the other in the second half. 04-chairshot

Emoni would give away 75+ lbs to Hunter. Too much!!!
