DearFriends,
Let's be honest about the free throws. We have been terrible at making free throws for the last several years. I don't know why, but we just can't make them, especially in crunch time.
I'm also fearful that this team is not going to be any bettter then last year.

As for the aura of the Emoni Bates season, I think that is already over in terms of drawing anymore fans than the initial bump in season tickets. But hopefully this season turns around so those additionsl fans will enjoy their experience and keep coming after Emoni is drafted to the NBA in the spring.

Too premature to say Bates will be drafted.

Well, who do we blame for this embarrassing 1-4 start? Only win over A D2 school as well!

Of course you have to blame the coaching staff but it’s too early to say this team can not be a top 4-5 team in conference. The weaknesses, however, are very glaring - lack of defense, lack of rebounding, TOs and very, very little inside game.

This team doesn't look much better then last season's team, with substantially more talent! Heath is 219-231 for his career coaching record! Take out the 30-6 season at Kent St, which he simply inherited then 189-225!

It's a long season. Stan has a new team. What's with this "heath has failed!"

EMU may have trouble with with bounce back games. UofM and Oakland were wars.
We've been making excuses for 26 years! Look at Buffalo, Ohio U, Kent St, Akron........We need to BEAT mid majors with having Bates, and Farrakhan! Now tied 54-54! Let's finish!

I'm worried about missed FTs.

Which cost us this game.

Missed a number of one and ones which don't show up in the states. The stats are 5 of 13.. plus say another half dozen in at least 3 1 and 1s.

We may have left a dozen points on the table.

I am not blaming the coaching staff, nor the players, and LEAST of all Emoni Bates. He is putting up numbers at age 18 that WILL get him drafted next week, and he is doing so in a very team oriented way. Great kid.

It just is what it is, a slow start for a team that young and new to each other. Still think EMU can contend for the MAC.

I agree with you we're young, and this team has 4 transfers! But, Heath is 9-25 versus D1 teams, and 2-0 versus D2 teams! Who on this board when looking at our OOC schedule didn't envision A 11-2, or 10-3 start! Heath needs to win NOW! Bates isn't coming to EMU next year! He has done his job! 4 games and 87 points!

Team is new and young and getting everyone's best shot.

No one is sleeping on Esstern.

Two things. We miss Spottsville taking care of the ball and his defense and no blocking shots. Arexwe going to see Ballard or Rice in a game this year? It appears our defense in based on a NBA based matador defense where we simply try to outscore the other team and get those individual scoring stats with playing defense a distant after thought

RE: Thanksgiving Game Week Men's Basketball - emu79 - 11-22-2022 06:25 PM

Being the leading scorer on a 1-4 team is a bit like wearing the captains uniform on the Titanic.

Phenomenal analysis on everything mentioned! College basketball isn't the D League! Our defense is non existent! We've another game tomorrow I believe!

Also consider the change of running the offense through Farrakhan to running it through Acuff. Last year EMU was an incomplete team but everything ran through their best player. This year EMU is running things through maybe their 4th best player. You get good shots by breaking down the defense and Farrakhan can do that well. Might see the staff revisit how they use Acuff a bit. The defense thing is a challenge. Bates is a bad defender, Golson is playing PF at 6-5 and Geeter center at 6-6. Farrakhan just does his own thing defensively. EMU will need to establish some kind of identity on both ends to be good.

This is an interesting post, Pono. Thank you. I am curious to who you think the third best EMU player is? And why do you consider Emoni a poor defender? And can you elaborate what you mean by Noah does his own thing defensively?

Otherwise, I agree that the height of the frontcourt is possibly creating a lot of challenges on the defensive side. Can lead to sequential breakdowns. Coaching staff is going to need to find a way to adjust for this.

Spottsville often made his opponent take bad shots, but he often sent fouled the shooter and sent him to the foul-line for two shots. He also averaged committing 1 foul every 11 minutes of playing time.

EMU is fouling at a high rate this season as well. Not good. Should not be occurring.

EMU's problem is that it's defense is not structured to stop scoring at the rim and from behind three-point line. It should be.

Only real hope for EMU's defense is to play Randle, a shot-blocker, at the rim and not have him venture out. But that's not how Heath plays his defense. Need to see if Randle can stay on the court by being taught how to play without excessively fouling.

Spottsville was good making his opponent take bad shots but such was negated by his committing 1 foul every 11 minutes of playing time.

I definitely like Randle as an on-going project, but concerned he is not developed enough yet to be a major factor. Nonethless, EMU does need his height, and may be worth a gamble to utilize Randle more. Or a different defensive scheme as you suggest. I am not sure what the answer is here...

EMU really needs a win today to stop the bleeding.

EMU really needs a win today to stop the bleeding.

Even though Randle is playing is getting his feet wet, it doesn't take long to teach a player the correct things to do on the court. But He needs to guard the rim, and that's not what he's being told to do. Until all the bigs are told to guard the rim and not stray from it, EMU opponents will continue to score many points.

Giuarding and forcing three-point shooters further out would also help limit opponents scoring.

Agree that offense should be run through Noah. Why is Noah subbed out 4 minutes into the lat game?

Height would not be as much a problem if Randle and Bates played upfront. Time for new look.

Bates is not going to get to the NBA on shooting alone. He needs to rebound on both sides of the court, and not turn the ball over and foul at a high rate. He'd be smart to play more inside on defense and not leak out as much as he does. Bates has EMU's worse defensive rating per 100 possessions.

Really like to see Rice play as well.

Like to see Heath put an end to the touch-fouls EMU commits.

Down 37-47 HT against Winthrop! Possibly 1-5! This is unbelievable with the talent on this team! Heath is on the brink of becoming a disaster! We're losing to very mid major teams!

New day…..still no defense and plenty of turnovers.
Down. 47-37 at half.
