G5 totem pole - otown - 11-13-2022 04:17 PM

I know this forum got inundated recently by Sun Belt fans pumping their fists in the air about their conference. The polls sure seemed to deflate their arguments. 2 loss AAC teams ranked ahead of 1 loss Sun Belt teams.

I would agree that the human pollsters are definitely taking a shine to the top AAC teams. Particularly since none of them but Tulane has an OOC win worth mentioning. Cincy and UCF have rankings based on beating nothing but other AAC schools, schools of questionable quality.

Basically, other than Tulane beating Kansas State, the AAC has done nothing vs the P5 at all this year. Cincy and UCF have wins ove the 12th place B1G team and the 9th place ACC team, respectively. They lost to the 10th place SEC and 8th place ACC teams, respectively. There is nothing to indicate either is any good at all in a national sense, and yet the AP has them at #17 and #23.

RE: G5 totem pole - MechaKnight - 11-13-2022 05:13 PM

#7 USC and #9 Clemson also have zero non-conference P5 wins.

Their best wins are #25 Oregon State* and #20 FSU

*Edit: left off the state part

Good points, P5 schools can be overrated too.

So let's look at how the AP compares to the computer composite (MC).

UCF ..... 17 AP ....... 20 MC

Tulane ... 21 AP ..... 26 MC

Cincy ..... 22 AP ..... 28 MC

Clemson .. 9 AP ...... 8 MC

USC ........ 7 AP ...... 11 MC

So compared to the computers, the human pollsters have the three AAC schools, and USC, overrated, while Clemson is slightly underrated.

Clemson OOC schedule:

Furman 35-12 W
LA Tech 48-20 W
Notre Dame 35-14 L

If you go strictly by rankings, maybe.

But USC absolutely dismantled a pretty good Rice squad in their home opener. But sure, Oregon has the ranking and name recognition, so I get it.

Wait what?

A pretty good Rice team? They got dump trucked by freakin Charlotte and my guess is they are .500 or lower in that stellar conference.

I love this place sometimes. Very objective.

Yes, Rice is 5-5, and just lost by 35 to Western Kentucky. That's not something for USC to brag about, IMO.

idk how the future G5 NY6 bowl race is going to work out but I can say with confidence you can kiss AAC having 3 ranked teams goodbye after this season. We'll be lucky to keep one in there in my opinion.

RE: G5 totem pole - ArmoredUpKnight - 11-14-2022 10:52 AM

AAC has established themselves as the 6th Power Conference with the best G5 tv deal.

The new CFP structure makes the path so much easier for the AAC.

Very much agree. It’s not even close. I would imagine soon that we ink our own NY6 bowl agreement then let the little 4 fight it out for the scraps.

How do you figure? The SBC and Liberty have clearly shown they can reach the top 25. Aside from UTSA the CUSA6 range from horrid to middling at best. The AAC is going to take a massive SOS hit next season.

The Human Polls care more about brands. AAC isn't barren, you still have SMU flagship with an exciting offense with Rhett Lashlee. When Memphis is good they grab attention. It seems like Tulane is an remerging brand.

If Tanner Mordecai returns next season, SMU should be a preseason Top 25 in this AAC rebuilding year.

TV Exposure is a big deal too. Aresco getting the most exposure puts the teams in front of the voter's eyes more often than the Sunbelt.

RE: G5 totem pole - rath v2.0 - 11-14-2022 12:46 PM

When we move on we are going to leave the Bearcat spirit animal totem on the top of the pole to help Panicstricken feel more grounded.

Not even close you say? Little 4? I guess we’ll see. Next years AAC, coupled with the new SBC, is not what they were after this season wraps up.

Coastal has been on national TV 4 weeks in a row. The SBC's better teams will get exposure lol. The terrible ODU loss is why we are where we are. Nothing else.

1. UTSA was a top 25 team in last December's final regular season AP poll and is currently #28th.

2. Tulane has been/is currently ranked (#21) this season.

3. ECU could have a ranked team at some point in the next 2-3 seasons.

Bottom line, you basically were jumped by 3 AAC teams with more losses than you. To put it in perspective, this is something similar that happens with P5 teams against AAC teams. It is a very similar bias....... but just goes to show the pecking order..... AAC>SBC

RE: G5 totem pole - ICB - 11-14-2022 07:48 PM

It seems when SunBelt fans claim their dominance, they tend to compare what the AAC is adding to what the SunBelt has, forgetting at times that there are some pretty good team that are already in the AAC.

We lost by 28 at home to an ODU team that is very very bad. Neither of those AAC schools had a worse loss. They were rightfully ahead of us. Nothing to do with a pecking order. Also, our best chance for a ranked win is if Coastal and Troy win out and play in the CCG.
