Monday Musings - fanfrompowellspub - 11-07-2022 05:26 AM

Football! Can change an entire school, communities, states, nations emotions week to week.
November is the best time for college football. No more non-conference cupcakes, inclement weather, game plans against familiar opponents, and go old fashion beef (what the kids call hate). Great games all over the country on Saturday and the MAC gets our day Tuesday.
One more tune up before the county championship down at LCA,empty arena empty calories, empty promises. Excited to check the team out tonight at 730.
Political musing: How different would our university be if EMU had statewide elections for board of trustees instead of appointees?

Glad to see you are up bright and early... Your post says 7:26 a.m. I'm posting at 6:09 am., despite what the forum software says. These clocks have me confused...

To pivot back to sports, fans need to get to the GG GA Center at the right time tonight for the bball games.

I have never seen worse game #1 scheduling. Schools I have never heard of. Johnson & Wales, Valley Forge, Fischer College, Milwaukee College of Engineering, etc.

I have been to Johnson and Wales. It is best known as a culinary school. Did not know they had sports.

Sure. Chris must not watch the games.

Hopefully someone else agrees with him and gives him a cool million per.

Cow, that ain't gonna happen and you know it unless somebody loses their coach at the last minute in spring like Kansas did. His W-L record and flat level of progression will not satisfy any boosters that are willing to spend big money.

I'm still in the Creighton tent, BUT a bowl game this year makes him our coach through freaking 2027! That simply is insane. C'mon EMU, get out of that Murphy style contract. We have been there and done that and it did not work well.

Jerry,

I think the P5s or better paying G5s come knocking on CCs door if he wins out and wins bowl game. A 9-4 record would do it based on his high quality kids and academic achievements.

Lucky, I love you man!

Still consider two things:

1) P5 boosters foot the bill for the football coach. High-quality kids and academic achievements are nice, but the W-L record is their primary obsession. Urban Meyer, the recruiter of Aaron Hernandez vs squeaky clean Chris Creighton? Who wins?

2) If a higher paying school does come calling, does a longer-term contract for
Creighton protect us? Nate Oats and Lance Leipold bolted even after being extended at Buffalo. I just don't see any reason for our head coach to be under contract for more than two years beyond his current season.

I want to disagree with Jerry.

The terms of CC's contract, as we are discussing, protects both him AND US. If someone wants to hire him after this season we should get a boat load of money as compensation.

If CC were under a year to year or two year contract, there is very little protection for him or us.

And I'll repeat a mantra I used before: Extending contracts, bowl bonuses, MACC appearance bonuses, etc. are all designed to reward excellence and make it harder for another school to poach that coach.

Like aren't successful ATHLETES given long term contracts in pro sports? Don't the teams want to tie down a super star? Of course,

And if Vince Lombardi was coaching in this current era, wouldn't he have a long term contract, with a ton of provisions to keep him?

Yes that is what successful athletes and coaches are given. CC is not in the that category. Win a championship or hell even play in one and we can talk. Neither him nor Murphy deserve contracts rewarding mediocrity, but good on them for negotiating them.

You make a reasoned argument on many points, especially the buyout provision.

I did NOT suggest a one or two-year contract, as that would be recruiting suicide. I simply want the horizon to not extend beyond three years from the current season and if Creighton gets a bowl invite this year, he is on the EMU payroll for FIVE more years! You are extremely correct that performance based bouses are effective and useful. I just would question how "excellent" a 6-6 record and a bowl appearance is when nearly half of FBS teams get such an invite. An extra year for a MAC West championship? Now you are talking a true accomplishment that certainly deserves an automatic year extension. I'm all in on that one for sure.

Keep in mind that CMU and WMU may not get to 6 wins this season, BUT they played two payday games when we played just one. I like the extra home game but extending Chris for such as schedule smells a whole lot like Murph loading up his non-conference slate with 20-win opponents like Siena Heights and U-M Dearborn.

An EXTREME long-term contract seldom works out for any organization, witnessed by Miggy with the Tigers. Also ask LSU and Texas A&M how those six- and ten-year contracts they signed Orgeron and Fisher to are working out? Orgeron actually won a National Championship.

What is the answer here? I took a walk less than two miles from my home a few weeks ago. U-M not only participates in the Olympic sports like soccer, field hockey and lacrosse, they also have incredible facilities for such. Each has its own stadium.

So, if I am a MAC school with FAR less revenue and still encumbered with Title IX regulations, what do I do? I honestly suspect that EMU and others in the conference will trim their men's sports offerings to Football and Basketball only while opting for the minimum women's sports that satisfy legal requirements.

MAC teams have MAC requirements which must meet NCAA D-I requirements.

The MAC hopes for a good OOC win or two, but the SWAC?
