XC/Track 2022-23 - DetroitRocket - 09-17-2022 02:10 PM

Couldn't find a thread for this.

UT men and women both placed second at the McNichols Invite in Indiana. Illinois won both team titles. Dennis Mutai placed first overall in the men's race (24:17) and Faith Linga ran 17:29 to finish second in the women's race. Great showing by the teams.

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - northcoastRocket - 09-18-2022 05:15 PM

Good showing for both the men and women.

Clearly UT and Illinois were the only 2 decent teams in the women's race, as in the women's the top 11 finishers were either from UT or UI. UT was 2nd by only 3 points. the 3rd place team Purdue was 73 points behind Toledo. Illinois is ranked 27th, while UT is 39th, and so maybe will move up a few slots this week.

Women finish seventh at ND meet. https://utrockets.com/news/2022/9/30/womens-cross-country-toledo-sets-10-prs-at-joe-piane-invitational.aspx

The Rocket women had a superb result at the Nuttycombe Invitational. In a 36-team field that included 20 of the country's top 30 ranked teams, Toledo finished 12th. The men ran the B race and finished fourth out of fifteen with Dennis Mutai finishing 2nd individually. For the women, Joy Chirchir finished 35th. This women's team could end up being as good as or better than Hadsell's best teams.

You beat me to it Lester. By my count, the Rocket women beat:
#9 Washington
#14 Arkansas
#15 Syracuse
#16 Providence
#17 Michigan State
#18 Michigan
#19 Utah Valley
#22 Colorado State
#23 Utah State
#24T Furman
#24T Florida State
#28 Wisconsin
#30 Harvard

and 2 teams, Oregon State and Gonzaga who were outside the top 30 but getting more votes than UT. Toledo came in to the meet at 36th by votes.

Also the only Great Lakes Region team to beat UT was Notre Dame, and UT came it ranked 6th in region.

The women moved up nine places over the last 4000 meters. They were, nonetheless, a long way from 11th. Still nice to see a strong finish. All seven runners are underclassmen.

3 Rocket women also ran the B race but times were all below those of the top seven.

Yeah, if I had been trying to be accurate instead of a cheerleader, I guess that I would have mentioned that the gap between 11th and 12th was bigger than the gap between 12th and 27th. Pretty strange.

The strong finish was important because it was the first race at the 6 k distance. That’s the NCAA championship distance. Bodes well for us getting a team bid.

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - northcoastRocket - 10-17-2022 02:12 PM

Rocket women move up to 3rd (from 6th) in the GL region, behind Notre Dame and OSU. OSU stayed ahead of UT by not running in the pre-nationals last week. National poll comes out tomorrow.

Men remain 9th in the region. Miami the only MAC team ranked higher (6th)

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - northcoastRocket - 10-18-2022 05:20 PM

Rockets ranked #16 !!!!!!!!!

2nd highest ranking in school history - highest was 15th in 2012. Ahead of every Big10 team. Interestingly, UT is 6 spots ahead of OSU in the national poll, but still behind them in the Great Lakes Region - What?

Anyway, congrats to the women and the tremendous job Coach McDonough has done.

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - northcoastRocket - 10-28-2022 07:11 PM

MAC championships are tomorrow and are supposed to be broadcast live on ESPN+. Woman's race at 11, Men's at Noon.

Thanks for that note. Now I just need to write a note so I don't forget to watch it - or stay away from the news so I can watch the replay later on without knowing the outcome. Problem is sometimes the replays don't show up for a few days on ESPN+

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - MotoRocket - 10-29-2022 10:20 AM

ESPN couldn't be more disappointing in their televising this event. Looks like they sent a golf cart out in front of the leaders then had somebody on the back of the cart with a hand held camera filming the leaders for TV. The camera is bouncing around so much you can't even watch it without getting motion sickness. It would be much better if they just put a tower out on the course and used a telephoto lens to telecast it.

Other than that, UT has two of the three leaders so far through the first 14 minutes of a 6K run.

Yep - I was right, but it's not a golf cart but rather a John Deere cart with a bed in the back that they are televising from. Apparently nobody told them the course is run over a golf course - and they decided not to use the cart path on the course.

Must have been a number of complaints so they are now using stationary cameras set up at various points on the course and occasionally going back to the bouncing camera on the cart to show the leaders. Joy Chirchir leading and Faith Linga in 3rd. Runner from Miami is in second.

Now the runner from Miami has made a break and has about a 20 yard lead

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - MotoRocket - 10-29-2022 10:22 AM

Carmen Riano from Miami wins it - Chirchir in second. Toledo leading the team standings. Linga takes third.

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - MotoRocket - 10-29-2022 10:24 AM

No one giving names of the finishers as they come across the line. Will have to wait to see how it turns out, but seems like Toledo will win first as a team for the women.

Says Toledo won the team title easily with Chirchir having a personal best. Have not shown the times.

If anyone watches the replay, be prepared for the bouncing camera views - and the fact the guy announcing the event sounds an awful lot like Reghi - but not quite as annoying. Just say he sounds like a sedated Reghi.

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - northcoastRocket - 10-29-2022 10:26 AM

Rockets win the women's title, with 29 points, 3 points better than last year.

Joy Chirchir came in second, despite running almost 50 seconds faster than last year, and about 40 second better than her PR.

I thought she’d win in a sprint finish but the Miami runner was so strong. Dominating team performance though.

Congrats, Rockets!

RE: XC/Track 2022-23 - northcoastRocket - 10-29-2022 10:28 AM

2nd place OU had 83 points, so that was a dominating win by UT.

Scorers:
Chirchir 2
Linga 3
Trois 6
E Vining 8
M Vining 10

Rockets had 9 runners in the top 32. No seniors, and 2 freshmen in the bunch.

Men to be racing at noon. Not going to watch that. I think I developed vertigo.

Pathetic announcing. Reminds me of the dumbest Olympic call ever when Eric Segal called the marathon. “It’s Shorter and Chirpinsky, Chirpinsky and Shorter. You won’t see one without the other until one of them pulls away!”

This guy offered nothing.
