William & Mary Field - billymac - 08-10-2022 04:28 PM

Found this gem today. It is a 30's era Post Card of William & Mary Stadium at Foreman Field, in Norfolk.

Sounds a little weird, but interesting. The football team played for 11 seasons (1930–1940), with a record of 42–36–4, before basically running out of money and disbanding.

In one of the stranger bits of football history, in late December 1932, the Norfolk Division team played the University of Miami Hurricanes, in Miami, after the four-year Florida college had sent an invitation to William & Mary's Williamsburg campus team, (to play in the brand new Orange Bowl) which the two-year Norfolk Division accidentally received (misaddressed) and quickly followed up on, never knowing that it was meant for the four year team. The Norfolk Division played well, with Hurricanes winning the game by only 6-2.

That is a gem indeed!! Thanks for sharing on here.
They should feature this in the Laycock Center, it’s part of the legacy.

There actually is a second-hand oral history of that game, from 1979. Seems U Miami did not know they were playing Norfolk Div until the team showed up:
