I hope this isn't the case and that we get a portal QB in but if we don't, woukd CC ever roll with incoming QB Jace Stuckey? He's an incoming freshman to us with good size and in high school was real good.

I cant believe I'm even proposing this question but seeing the terrible quarterbacking we've had this year made me wonder.
Not a dumb question. Every position, especially on offense, should be 100% open to the best player. If the freshman is ready, give him a shot.

Agree with both Steves, a football team is indeed a meritocracy. Creighton's policy of auto-redshirting his freshman is probably out-of-date as well, with the advent of the portal. The world has changed, whether I agree with it or not. Dabo Swinney has refused to change at Clemson and look at what it has done for him.

In theory, yes...best player should be on the field, regardless of class rank. In practice, redshirt years are never going away. The speed of play difference between high school and college is incredible, as is the strength level. For qb's rb's, wr's, and db's, you might have some guys out of high school with insane talent who can play as a freshman, but those are the outliers, and if they are that good, they'll likely land at a P5. Linemen, lb's, te's benefit greatly from a year of conditioning and strength training before hitting the field.

Also keep in mind that a player can play in four games and still preserve their redshirt status. So if the coaches feel a player is potentially that good, they can play them in a few games and make the decision about preserving the redshirt based on their performance. That fifth year of eligibility is a big thing as far as player development goes. It will never go away.

Good points Cid. You bring up a good point about if the kid is good enough then play him a few games and see if he is better than the existing talent at his position. If he is balling out, then let him rip it that year. Would suck burning the redshirt year, but would give the team the best chance to win that year and 3 yrs after.

Need to add at least 2 more QBs to this class. I suspect that 2 or 3 will be gone from this year's squad.

I'm sure this was said somewhat in jest but CC would never do that.

Yes in jest but we seriously need some immediate help and will not have time to develop high school recruits.

You make an incredibly reasoned argument, especially when you consider that we "burned the shirt" of Hassan Beydoun in his first year by just one game!

Late bloomer that just started playing. I'm sure he'll redshirt next year.

RE: Unofficial EMU Football Recruiting Thread 2024 - emu steve - 11-19-2023 05:42 AM

Just a note: Wash Post this week had an article on all but the top h.s. kids are being UNDER recruited. Recruiting is more focused on transfers, proven, plug and play, talent and less on 3 star h.s. kids who need to be developed and quite frankly far, far from a sure thing.

Discusses a lot of issues like under recruited kids make good and transfer up.

Edit: Same intensity, fewer spots: How H.S. football recruiting is evolving

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/11/15/same-intensity-fewer-spots-how-hs-football-recruiting-is-evolving/

I wonder if C.C. is going against the grain and taking advantage that the big boys are not saving as many slots for hs. Kids.

Maybe. He graduates in December and if he signs would enroll in January. Gives him an extra semester to weight train and learn the system. Hopefully he develops into a road grader OL to get our running game getting dominant.

Another OL. I'd like to hear his Storey. D1 offers, commits to GVSU, then plays a year at Hope.

Assumption is that this is a walk-on.

With the holes being left by Dmitri, Howie and Dooley this is kind of what I expected. In the last couple days we have seen non-High School graduates both get picked up by EMU in Storey and Dahoue. I anticipate even more. Our line needs a lot of attention this off-season.
