These numbers are pretty meaningless due to the FBS 15000 mandate. Schools buy large block of tickets just to remain complient so figures are fudged. No way Akron was selling 18k tickets per game lol

If the 15000 FBS threshold was truly a concern, the MAC would have ended MACtion with ESPN after the first season. There is no way you are going to get 15K fans to a Mid-Major Tuesday night game in November in the Upper Midwest.

Sam Houston State is transitioning to FBS and their stadium has a seating capacity of 12593, and they barely get half of that on game day. I doubt the NCAA cares much about attendance anymore.

RE: MAC FB Attendance and Some Others Mixed In - axeme - 01-09-2022 08:48 AM

There are so many other sources of revenue today for athletic departments besides people showing up to stadiums and arenas and buying tickets that attendance has ceased to be a measure of what it was thought to be. Schools are finding lots of ways to finance their programs and these ways continue to evolve as broadcast media money, corporate sponsorships, social media money, etc. become more a part of the fabric of college athletics. Measuring the viability of an athletic program by how many people watch it live is meaningless today. It matters to a few old attendance nerds on message boards, but not in the real world of college athletics. Even these message boards are an old-fashioned medium that aren’t what they used to be 10+ years ago.

At any rate, PH is right: the NCAA has lost all interest in using attendance as anything meaningful. It’s just not a factor anymore. In the real world, it may matter how many people stream events or engage with programs on social media, etc. but the NCAA is sure not going jump into to trying to figure out and regulate what all that means.

I think you are saying in a roundabout way, the NCAA does not look at the optics, it looks at the revenue generation that goes into their coffers.
I can't believe that the NCAA only cares about is money! They are such a wholesome group that cares about the student's education and their values in life as well as their athletic well being.

Not true at all CMU had over 15k on a weeknight vs Ball st as both teams were fighting for MAC W was 2007 or 8.

MAC and ESPN need to somehow flex top games in MAC to maction

BG easily had 16-18,000 in attendance this past year for the Rocket/Falcon rivalry game on a cold November night...
Toledo will have that, and then some, in the Glass Bowl next November !!
MACTION or no MACTION !!

18,349, to be precise.

Yes, I don't know why the NCAA just doesn't do away with the rule. Either way schools still buy tickets themselves to remain compliant so these numbers don't really show anything.

2021 season is available too, but I used 2019 because it was the last season before Covid impacted attendance.

Beer you speak the TRUTH!

The term, "NCAA Mandate" also means little at this point. I think the NCAA as an organization has achieved the respect level of Enron or Bernie Madoff.

Oh wait, Enron and Madoff were competent but extremely corrupt, the NCAA just is not in any way competent.

Ok, so 1 game 14 years ago & way before MACtion started is proof that having games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights from late October to late November is a draw for fans?

I would hope that a longstanding rivalry between 2 schools that are 20 miles apart would draw over 15000 fans since fan bases from both schools are able to travel on a Tuesday night.

Now tell me how many people show up for an Akron game at EMU on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.

Or how many would go to that game on a Saturday afternoon after Thanksgiving? It’s a small number no matter which day of the week it is.

If It is one of the 2 games on Tuesday, they will show it on the Duece or the U.

Whether the matchup is Ohio v BSU or NIU v Akron, or I will even go bigger, CMU v WMU or Ohio V Miami, You are not going to get 15K in actual attendance.
