JMU unsurprisingly barred from competing for CAA championships upon acceptance t - 82hawk - 11-04-2021 05:15 AM

JMU is an original member of the CAA. Since inception, JMU has voted to bar every school that has left the CAA from competing for CAA championships. Yet the petulant and petty JMU President and AD issued a statement bashing the other CAA schools for this move.

What a classless move by JMU.

“As we head into a potentially monumental week for the future of James Madison University and our intercollegiate athletics program, we were extremely disappointed to be informed by the Colonial Athletic Association that, should the university accept an invitation to another conference, JMU student-athletes would not be allowed to compete for postseason conference team championships and, therefore, for the opportunity to earn NCAA automatic team qualification,” the school said in a joint statement from President Jonathan Alger and athletic director Jeff Bourne. “In an era when the industry of college athletics stresses student-athlete welfare, this decision is completely contrary to those ideals.”

You have to assume they knew this was expected. Just shouting really loud for optics for the players, families, and fans now. Go get an at large, win a few games, and get the CAA some more money!

I think this vote clearly means there is no substance to the SoCon rumor. If there were, no way UNCW, COC, Elon, and W&M vote to enforce the ban on conference championships.

Frankly, I think they should be allowed to compete. It would have increased the interest for all sports. I get it for 22-23, but for this season no fear of competition here.

This has nothing to do with the SoCon conversation. It's a rule that's been in place since the inception of the CAA. JMU is ready to move on. Doesn't mean they deserve any special recognition that the likes of VCU, ODU, GMU, or even ECU didn't get.

Feel bad for student athletes, especially seniors. They did not make this choice and will never be part of new league. Very petty this year and also in past it was petty. Do administrators really give a crap about students

Yes But if CAA South were planning a mass exodus they would have voted with JMU to change the rule. Unless there was a North South divide on this vote, it would be dumb for CAA South Schools to for all intenets and purposes, vote to ban themselves, if they were truly about to make a move too

I have never seen this policy as a "fear of competition". It is actually very practical. The CAA doesn't want a school that is already identified with another conference potentially representing the CAA in the NCAA tournament. They also don't want to line the pockets of a departing school with NCAA tournament dollars. I see no problem with it at all. The students still get to play the sport and can still win the regular season. This just removes the financial benefits from the departing school.

The conference gets the NCAA payout not the school

It would make a lot more sense to have an increased exit fee or forfeiture of any financial payout from the conference than to ban students from competing for championships

If JMU was a good team I would want them to make the final 4 and then have to leave all that money to the CAA

We can continue to talk what should or shouldn't be. Bottom line is it's a standard that JMU has fully supported until it affected them.

Where do we see how each school voted on the matter? Let’s say UNCW, CofC, JMU, and WM all voted to allow them to compete. Entirely possible they could still be out voted. Correct?

yes, that is the point i was trying to make

if the 5 southern schools said YES JMU and the 5 northern schools said NO JMU, the northern schools would win because its a rule on the books looking to be waived/repealed

Here's some food for thought, what if all the schools rumored to leave for SOCN also announced. Would the 5 teams left compete for the title?

RE: JMU unsurprisingly barred from competing for CAA championships upon acceptance t - Big Alpha Hawk - 11-04-2021 09:41 AM

The team that it would affect most is JMU Men's soccer. They would have a great shot at CAA championship. They also are good enough that they will likely get an at large bid to NCAA tournament.

RE: JMU unsurprisingly barred from competing for CAA championships upon acceptance t - TribePride91 - 11-04-2021 09:42 AM

I understand the rule and I get that the CAA can apply it. I also get the precedent and the fact that JMU voted for it in the past. This does underscore that the CAA needs to move quickly to finalize whatever plans it has for expansion. It also does not lessen the potential that each of the current CAA members is looking at what other options are out there.

For UNCW and W&M who are predicted last, it might not matter for basketball season.

And being #5 right now, we could be the biggest beneficiaries if the announce tomorrow a move to the Sunbelt.

As it stands right now, those are just that, unfounded rumors. Not saying it couldn't happen in the long run. But, unless our illustrious Commish does something to screw it up, the mission is north-south divisions. At this point we hold the upper hand with the SoCon and the Big South. They are not happy with what the path forward looks like. And I'm sure they do not plan on taking it lying down. This is where our history of leadership concerns me. But, for once we are in control of our conference destiny.

Not best of times for us as we have a lame duck Chancellor who has shown that he can change his mind with the smallest amount of disagreement with his initial decisions and not the strongest of backbone

I assume that JMU could still get the automatic bid to the NIT should they be regular season champions.

JMU leaving like your HS girlfriend breaking up with you before you go to college, and you're glad she finally did it. Then she throws a fit because you don't care.

Just leave already.
