Question For UTSA Fans - The WEST is the BEST - 10-14-2021 12:09 PM

I hear that UTSA is considering branding itself as the "San Antonio Road Runners" and downplaying "UTSA" for "San Antonio." A move to identify as San Antonio's team and highlight the city of San Antonio. Maybe include the SA Skyline on uniforms, marketing, and other items that people identify with the city. Similar to how UNC Charlotte markets its program to CLT along with SMU and the city of Dallas. This sounds like a great idea, great opportunities in uniforms with alternate colors, etc. Plus you separate the school from being just a university in the UT system and distance the school from UTEP.

Only Charlotte can do Charlotte.

RE: Question For UTSA Fans - Fear The Beak 2 - 10-14-2021 12:59 PM

Some folks on these fans boards have floated that idea, but I’ve never heard any UTSA officials even mention it. Don’t think that will happen.

Not gonna happen. UCLA never separated itself from the California system. The Cal Bears are the flagship, but everyone still says UCLA, and not Los Angeles Bruins.

I've never heard anything of the sort from UTSA officials or even from our fans, so I'm really curious where you may have come across that. Btw, it's "Roadrunners". I sometimes see it written as "road runner", but that's a person running on the road, while "roadrunner" refers to the bird. Not a big deal, but just wanted to throw that in there.

Your comment about SMU confused me though. What exactly is SMU doing to identify with the city of Dallas?

SMU (Dallas)
The uniforms did look clean.

Ahhh, wasn't aware they were doing that. That is a nice look they have. The SA in UTSA already points out that we're in San Antonio though. I mean, I realize that saying S.A. isn't nearly the same as saying L.A., but there's literally nothing in "SMU", even if you write it out as "Southern Methodist University", to even suggest that it's in Texas, much less in Dallas.

And no offense to SMU, but that whole spiel just strikes me as a desperate measure to establish their market value amidst all the latest realignment rumors that have been going on for at least a couple years now. After all, Houston will be moving up now to rejoin TCU, Texas Tech, and Baylor from the old SWC, leaving SMU stranded like an unwanted stepchild even though they were in the SWC a full 54 years before Houston ever joined.

I will say that one thing we did previously to market San Antonio, aside from already having San Antonio in our namesake, was to put a golden outline of the Alamo on the back of our helmets years ago under Coach Coker, with the Texas flag right below it. It was a beautiful look too! Would like to see that return. I actually have a game-worn helmet that I won in a silent auction at a UTSA fundraiser which has that.

Another thing we did after that, under Coach Wilson, was to get rid of the Roadrunner on our helmet and put an outline of the state of Texas on there with a star where San Antonio is. Most of our fans didn't like that though and were clamoring to get Rowdy back on our helmets. But I wouldn't be in favor of going so far as to put "San Antonio" across our jersey.

Yeah I havent anything like that either.

RE: Question For UTSA Fans - LRdawg - 10-15-2021 10:00 AM

"UTSA" rolls off the tongue better than saying San Antonio.

Earlier this season, the equipment manager tweeted a hint that there is a "San Antonio" theme uniform in the works (ala SMU's "Dallas" jersey) but we won't see it until next season.

As far as a complete SA-themed rebranding, no, I haven't heard that either. TBH I'd be pretty surprised. It's taken forever to get "UTSA" to catch on instead of "Texas-San Antonio."

My thoughts exactly! And it actually still hasn't completely caught on. But yeah, we don't need to be going back and forth, rebranding ourselves, as we're trying to get our identity established. Only confuses things even more.

RE: Question For UTSA Fans - BirdsUp210 - 10-18-2021 01:34 PM

UTSA couldn't afford to rebrand even if they wanted to.

RE: Question For UTSA Fans - olliebaba - 10-18-2021 01:44 PM

Why not brand yourselves as Ootsa. It's catchy and it incorporates all the letters in your name. Because face it, if someone asked you to pronounce UTSA what would you tell them?

By the way, I want a cut of the money from your merchandise when you do. No, seriously because you heard it here first and it's on paper, so to speak.
