Watched VU @ PSU. PSU was up 38-3, then VU got mid & late 4th qtr TDs in garbage time.

PSU couldn't run on VU (only rushed for net 80), but threw all over them- Threw for over 429. 4 plays for 50+, 3 of them for TDs.

Princeton, they've given up like 8 yards in 3 games. All three teams were horrifying bad on offense though. They've got Monmouth this week.

I’m looking forward to this game and am glad it is at home. Villanova is the clear #2 team in the CAA and is one of the few teams to have the key QB position intact with a proven veteran.

If you think about, JMU hasn’t played anyone with their QB in solid standing.
Morehead - who cares.
Maine - lost starter Ferguson to transfer, then their backup got hurt against JMU.
Weber St - QB1 hurt, QB2 started then got benched, QB3 played better
UNH - QB1 injured, QB2 has the reigns for the full year.

Looking at the next 2 games after Nova, Richmomd’s QB1 is injured with a broken finger on his throwing hand and Delaware’s QB1 is injured with a hip that may end his season or reduce him to a few series per game.

Villanova has all of its bullets in the chamber and should be very competitive and feisty. I’m sure they haven’t forgotten blowing the lead in the 4th quarter against JMU 2 years ago. Also, they’ve had 2 weeks to prepare for this game following a Bye after playing Penn State.

It has all the makings of an upset and the Dukes will need every bit of the 25k sellout to create a homefield advantage. A few false starts can be the difference in the game.
Neither team will allow the run and the passing of Cojo vs Little Danny Smith should be the headline.

Not sure what other games are out there, but this has to be the game of the week in FCS. 04-rock

If he weather is good, Dukes win by 21 due to Nova's relatively poor pass D and CoJo's pinpoint accuracy. They may slow us down on the ground, but Cole will pick them apart.

In the rain, Dukes win by 7.

Hoping for a good game from our offense, not the bed-sh!tting that happened last Saturday.

Surprisingly this weekend looks like one of the best weekends for FCS football in awhile. JMU/VU, NDSU/UNI, SDSU/SIU, UND/USD, UD/URI(actually a huge game for both teams)

Week 6 #9/11 Villanova (3-1/1-0) @ #2/3 JMU (4-0/2-0) - JMU_Newbill - 10-05-2021 08:01 AM

Early weather forecast calling for showers. Rain doesn’t do our passing game any favors and Villanova has the defense to contain our rushing attack, especially if the playcalling is as vanilla as it was against UNH.

I like JMU in a very close game that comes down to the final drive and possibly another game winner from Ratke. I’ll go 17-14 Dukes.

Well, it certainly doesn't help Villanova's passing game, either.
We have a pretty good defense too.

Agreed, which is why I’m going with a low score for both teams. Whatever the O/U is this week, I would definitely take the under without even seeing it.

I think PSU kept it real vanilla vs VU. Definitely didn't want to show anything on film for their Big 10 opponents. The 80 nets yds PSU yards rushing included 3 sacks by VU for minus 16. But that still leaves 31 carries for only 96 yards. VU's 3-3-5 stack defense seemed to befuddle PSU's running game. Don't know if they face any other teams with it, and I imagine didn't spend too much time on it.

The way to beat that 3-3-5 stack that VU has run going back to the Andy Talley days, as we have armchair QB'ed on here in years past when facing VU, is with a lot of quick out patterns, flares, bubble screens, etc. Dink and dunk. That sounds like right up JMU's alley, and should be doable even if inclement weather on Saturday.

True, lol. Ironically, the Morehead QB was probably the best QB JMU has faced so far, since as you pointed out, he is the only QB1 JMU has faced for an entire game. The Morehead QB was good. His supporting cast sans 1 WR were completely overmatched. Copied off the Morehead thread:
Quote:"All-PFL First-Team selection in the spring season. He led PFL in passing efficiency, passing TDs, passing yards, points responsible for, and points responsible for per game. Pappas enters his final season with 3,553 career passing yards and 30 TDs. He has four career rushing scores well."

Yup....don't get greedy and avoid penalties and can move up and down the field with quick short passing game. The 3-3-5 stack is the epitome of bend don't break defense and wait for the offense to shoot itself in the foot.

Come out pass heavy in the 1st half then run more in the 2nd half as they adjust out of base 3-3-5 concepts.

I agree... definitely the under. I do like our chances if it's a ground game for both sides. Plus our defensive line is our strength.
I am hoping we will get Percy more carries this week.
I expect the team to play much better this week, which is bad news for Villanova.

They allowed 35 against RU, I'm thinking it'll get a little uglier than most would expect as long as we can avoid turnovers and avoid any dumb penalties to give them freebies and momentum. Let's hope we got all those out of the way in New Hampshire. Villanova scores a garbage TD to make it a little closer at the end though.

Cats #3 24
Dukes 41

I have never been impressed with the VU qb in the past playing against JMU. Daniel Smith has been talked up for years, and never seen him show much in person.

FWIW in 2019 @ JMU:
26 of 47, 387 yds, 3 TDs/3 INT (1 a pick 6 by MJ Hampton).

Speaking of Hampton, anyone heard when/if he'll be back this season? He was 1st team All CAA in the Spring. Be nice to have him and McCormick back in the secondary...
