RE: Pre October Power Rankings - Bronco'14 - 09-26-2021 08:08 PM

Western Michigan
Eastern Michigan
Bowling Green St
Northern Illinois
Buffalo
Toledo
Central Michigan
Miami
Kent St
Ball St
Akron
Ohio

---WMU has P5 win, shutout FCS, held defending MW champ to a FG.
---Gonna get criticism for EMU #2. Yes they played a lighter schedule, but you play your schedule. This isn't the Eastern team from yesteryear.
---BGSU skyrockets up w/ a W over a Minnesota team some thought could have a year similar to 2019. W/ 2 Wins already, I'm not gonna punish them just b/c they were bad last year
---NIU's W over GA Tech looks better w/ Tech beating a ranked UNC
---UB has a G5 W & played ranked CC to the wire
---Toledo so far has the only win that matters & CMU struggled w/ a FIU team that's not supposed to be very good, so I put UT over CMU
---I put Miami over Kent b/c even tho Kent's played tougher schedule, I feel Miami's always underrated going into conference play
---BSU over UA b/c seems like BSU's defense is decent.
---Ohio gets the bottom slot. Could they go 1-11?

Last Week:
Northern Illinois
Western Michigan
Eastern Michigan
Central Michigan
Toledo
Miami
Buffalo
Kent St
Ball St
Bowling Green St
Akron
Ohio

RE: Pre October Power Rankings - Boca Rocket - 09-26-2021 09:30 PM

Toledo's is a MAC road win. Those are hard to come by.

RE: Pre October Power Rankings - UofToledoFans - 09-26-2021 09:32 PM

I gave EMU a nod, but nothing too drastic, as these are power rankings. They got whooped by Wisc. Toledo lost by 3 to their P5. And we saw what ND did to Wisc. Now the TSU and CSU games are different stories, and i believe Toledo will prove eventually to be a little better than EMU... but 2nd seems like recency bias IMO. Def not old EMU, but not quite West contenders quite yet.... I predicted em to go 9-3. Wisconsins results have skewed my position a bit.

These are fine, but they are not really power rankings. These are just the standings.

And EMU's isn't right. EMU is 3 - 1. We are two G5 and one FCS win.

EMU's strength of schedule is rated 190th by Sagarin.

Too high.

The Falcons have a fierce defense. They are extremely young and getting better each week. But until we see more, I'd still put them in the 7th to 9th range, with Eastern Michigan and Miami, and behind (in some order) Western Michigan, Toledo, Buffalo, Northern Illinois, Central Michigan, and Kent State.

The Falcons are a 16.5-point dog at Kent State. That's not unreasonable.

The story line on EMU is that we really don't know how good they are. EMU was flat out good. Bryant had time to do his homework waiting for a receiver to break open.

Played TX ST which appears to have been somewhat short handed but how much isn't clear. NO reporter asked a question which a researcher might have asked, "How many of your 2-deep roster did not play because of injury or Covid?"

Normally, say 6 or 8 out of a full squad of say 85 - 100 so might be questionable or out because of injury.

Remember, travel squads are normally 55 players I think. Say half dozen on the 'scout team' who might be quarantining really don't count. They weren't going to see The Factory, anyway.

Just don't put Kent State too high and jinx us. #6 is fine.

RE: Pre October Power Rankings - Love and Honor - 09-27-2021 01:16 PM

8/9 is probably right for Miami based on performance to-date, but somehow Martin seems to find a way to pull 6 MAC wins out of his butt. That's doubtful if Gabbert isn't healthy at QB (nagging knee issues) but you never know.

Id argue you have the best win in the league this year... Take a Toledo fans praise.

RE: Pre October Power Rankings - wmubroncopilot - 09-27-2021 08:51 PM

I tried to rank on resume so far. It's too dang muddled.

Here's my predicted finish.

West
Toledo
WMU
CMU
NIU
EMU
Ball St.

East:
Buffalo
Miami
Kent St.
BGSU
Ohio
Akron

Toledo by a hair in the West mostly because they host WMU.

RE: Pre October Power Rankings - Bronco'14 - 09-28-2021 04:13 PM

Toledo has an easier schedule than WMU does. I think that'll play a role.

We knew that coming into the year. Hence is 8 game win expectancy. I barraided podcasts picking BSU AND WMU ahead of us, or even those picking the under for UT... We have FCS, bad CSU (did lose), UMass, Akron, BG, and NIU on the schedule. IMO that was 6 right there. Now BG and NIU are better, but Ohio is vastly worse!

We play the West and then end with the Eastern teams of BG, Ohio and Akron. The West could be locked up post early Novemver vs. Eastern.

RE: Pre October Power Rankings - george14 - 09-29-2021 05:14 PM

Just some of my thoughts FWIW:
- KENT could win the MAC
- EMU had a cupcake schedule, not impressed but also not their fault.
- UB and WMU are the top teams I think
- CMU has all the talent but I see us dropping a few games
- Ohio and Akron suck
- Toledo is an unknown

1. Yes they could
2. Meh did their job, unlike most of the league (My Rockets included). Got to love a team with no buzz and a chip on their shoulder.
3. Probably. Dont understand the Nebraska game or 2nd half vs. ODU though.
4. Lots of roster talent for sure!
5. Yep.
6. Double Yep.

It looks to me like this comes down to Kent or Buffalo. We will learn much more Saturday. The Falcons will be an interesting test for Kent State. Bowling Green's defense has been fierce, but the Flashes have a scary offense -- the old #FalconFast approach -- so we will see how that goes.

Flashes host BG this week and UB next week. The central questions about the East should be answered by then.

RE: Pre October Power Rankings - DICK - 09-30-2021 09:46 PM

Miami has not yet played anywhere near a solid 60 minute performance. IF we are going to be good, it will show up Saturday. Under Martin, we always have had a losing record preconference, then have turned it on once league play starts. A very quiet stat is that Miami will be trying for our 10th straight home win Saturday vs CMU in a replay of the 2019 MACC.
