BYU will have reduced payouts for 2 years. - bearcat29 - 09-11-2021 09:48 PM

According to the Athletic, BYU will have reduced payouts for 2 years and it will be a full member with full shares after the media deal in 2024.

Have any of the info come out for UC, or will that wait until AAC buyout is finished?

I also found it interesting that BYU (according to the same article -paywall) could increase per school TV deal by 2 mil per school as their ratings are better than L8 in similar time slots.

Could be good news for UC if it is only 2 years, as I thought it took WVU 4 years to receive a full share.

It did take WVU 4 years to get to "full share." A key part of that was that the B12 paid directly to BE to get WVU into the Conference right away. So, between Entry Fees and BE Exit fees, WVU took that long to get to full-share. I think they started at 55% and then it graduated annually up from there, but 55% was still double of what they had gotten from the BE the year before, so it didn't sting quite as bad as it might seem at first.

I still think that the B12 needs "us" right now, so I would hope that the B12 is amenable to making things as good for UC as possible. Two years would be a decent deal, but remember, BYU isn't needing to buy their way out of a conference. BYU arguably also brings more immediate "bang" to the media deal than UC does, so as a UC fan I am preparing for the "4 years" thing...but that probably also factors in the "entry" fee (which, IMO, the B12 ought to waive, but anyway...) and buying us out of the AAC.

FWIW, the WVU call-in shows have been making a point recently about "how long" it took WVU to get to full share, which seems to set the posture that "we" should expect nothing better than that when it comes to our entry. Of course, the WVU call-in shows are also still talking about the ACC swooping in to rescue WVU as well, so...

On the plus, if it is the B12 doing the negotiation for all three of UC, Houston, and UCF...as opposed to each of us trying to do our own deals...then it means that it won't have to get "personal" between us and the conference and things will get settled quickly and uniformly.

WVU call in shows must be a hoot.
