AAC reaching out to Big 12 teams hoping to become new P5 conference - statefanatic - 07-25-2021 12:08 PM

Sources from Iowa St reporting the AAC has reached out to them and other schools. The hope is to kill the big 12 and become the new P5 conference. Also reports that Big 12 schools may agree to give UT and OU more tv money to stay in the Big 12.

A bidding war for OU and UT, hope the SEC doesn't fall into that. That is what has killed the Big 12 all along is the unbalanced payout to UT, it’s why Colorado, A&M, Nebraska and Mizzou all left.

B12 schools will stay under the B12 umbrella. They will still have autonomous power until 2025 and the B12 TV contract runs through 2026. No school left out is going to give that up. Aresco and his pretend Power 6 have no play here. As I said on the realignment board yesterday: As Aerosmith sings "Dream On".

The Big 12 can't stay at 8. Other schools like OSU, Baylor and TCU have already began to reach out to other conferences. OSU AD said no teams bring value to the Big 12. The AAC may be dreaming but they have to try. One team (probably WVU) will be left out. The only place for them to go will be the AAC.

Sports articles are starting to pop up talking about this.

East Carolina, USF and Tulane are definitely NOT ready for P-5 football, Temple and Tulsa are questionable at best. Weak source for good info, IMO.

The AAC May be the landing spot of the remaining Big 12 teams, but it won’t be 8 of them. With the PAC and B1G still in the mix, undoubtedly someone will land in one of those 2 conferences.

Not real sure why the OSU guy wants to split the conference north and south when East/west makes much more sense. And if they want to shed weight and drop ECU, some SBC teams may be interested in adding them to our makeup.

That OSU guy has quite the imagination

I honestly don’t see how the AAC becomes a bigger player. It doesn’t make a difference if the BIG12 stays alive or not. They seemed destined to be on the outside looking in.

The AAC is all about creating a reputation. They tried to market themselves as a P6, now they are trying to parlay that into being the power conference that absorbs the Big 12.

Big 12 is named as an autonomous conference by name so if any of the current Big 12 members remain it makes more sense that they will invite American teams to join them.

Remember that the AAC use to be the Big East. The Big 12 will lose P5 status if UT and OU leave. It doesn't matter which conference either team joins.

I get that. But it seems more ego driven than anything else. If they are looking for a seat at the grown ups table, I don’t see any scenario where it happens under the AAC name.

If you're Cincinnati, and the remaining Big 12 members call and offer membership, are you taking that deal or pinning your hopes that the AAC will somehow get Big 12 schools to come over? If you're Houston, would you rather be in a league with Tech, TCU, and Baylor, or with SMU, Tulane, and Tulsa?

Lot of noise about something that has no chance of happening...but you can't blame the AAC for trying.

About as likely to happen as us raiding the AAC.

I still think we should be proactive and make a cheeky bid for Southern Miss the minute this happens, if it does. It might not work, but an aggressive SBC would put other leagues on notice that we're not going to just let our teams go with ease.

Kinda seems all or nothing for AAC, if the Big 12 implodes, they will probably land atleast a couple quality schools, but if the Big 12 decides to keep going, then say bye bye to atleast 2 of their better programs.

I think if you’re Cincy and do get that call, you immediately get on the horn with the other schools and vet what is left of the Big 12. Who’s left, who else is coming. They could always accept the Big 12 then back out like Boise did with the MW, accepting BE before going back to the MW.

Their AD McClain is very familiar with the Sun Belt and anything to give themselves a shot of energy should be on the table.
