Dixie State's new name... - TardisCaptain - 06-08-2021 09:33 AM

... will not have the name Dixie in it.

Nor will it have Deseret, Red Rocks or St. George in the name.

https://www.fox13now.com/news/local-news/dixie-is-officially-dumped-in-vote-over-university-name-change

According to this article, some of the names that could be considered are:

-Utah Technological University
(It will probably be shortened to Utah Tech by sportswriters.)
-Utah University of Technology & Arts
(UUTA????)
-Utah University of Technology & Humanities
(I think that's even worse than UUTA.)
-Utah Polytechnic University
(Well there is a Cal Poly... so Utah Poly? Sounds like an American Girl Doll.)
-Utah Institute of Technology
(I'm on the fence with this one. I can see haters using UTI as a joke.)
-Utah University of Technology
(I'm sensing a theme.)

Most of these would work for a school name. And I suspect that sportswriters will stick with "Utah Tech" if one of the above variants is used.

Utah Tech works for me.

RE: Dixie State's new name... - Trod0 - 06-08-2021 11:52 AM

Dixie State sounds a lot better than all of those.

RE: Dixie State's new name... - NMSUPistolPete - 06-08-2021 12:04 PM

There is a North Carolina A&T (Agricultural and Technical) so I could see a Utah A&T (Arts & Technology). And, there is a Cal Poly so I could also see a Utah Poly. There is a Texas Tech so maybe a Utah Tech. And, finally there is a MIT or NJIT so why not a UIT.

I like Utah Tech the best. U-Tech

Then again maybe they get silly and change Dixie State to Utah Technology, Arts, & Humanities... UTAH.

Utah Tech.

Utah Poly in that area of the state would be funny though.

UTAH TECH is best imho. There are only five D1 schools named Tech:

-- Louisiana Tech (most use the shorter "LA TECH")

-- Texas Tech (TTU)

-- Tennessee Tech (they also use TTU)

-- Georgia Tech

-- Virginia Tech (most use VT)

Thanks. Corrected.

Whatever the official name that gets printed on the degrees is, it sounds like the athletic branding will be Utah Tech or Utah Poly.

RE: Dixie State's new name... - HawaiiMongoose - 06-08-2021 07:03 PM

Just as expected. I predicted six months ago that it would probably come down to Utah Tech or Utah Poly. I like Utah Polytechnic University with Utah Tech as the branding.

I like Utah Tech. On the surface level, it elevates the name to a statewide rather than regional/bidirectional name.

Nice choice

Yup. Seeing a bunch of students walking around with POLY in big block letters on their shirt would be the next "Morehead" State

#UPolyBro?

It's Utah Tech or bust. Anything less would be uncivilized.

RE: Dixie State's new name... - OhioBoilermaker - 06-08-2021 11:29 PM

UIT is my favorite. Can be always be spoken as Utah Tech. After all, Georgia Tech is actually Georgia Institute of Technology.

“Tech” just sounds tacky to me when used in a school’s official name.

This should have happened before they entered the WAC.

Sure, Utah Institute of Technology will look better on diplomas and other official documents. Utah Tech works best for common usage,

The other thing that Utah Tech does is make it "UT" like the postal abbreviation for the state.

RE: Dixie State's new name... - edinburger - 06-09-2021 04:00 PM

Be like Ohio State and call it the The Utah Technological University. Then we can call them tutu and that suggests an appropriate mascot.

RE: Dixie State's new name... - SDHornet - 06-09-2021 06:31 PM

Utah Tech has the best "ring".
