Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - TexasTerror - 03-29-2021 06:02 PM

Not related to the WAC openings per say but certainly very impactful to the WAC are coaching searches across the country.

Two current WAC head coaches and a former one listed below

Quote: San Jose State: Interviews starting here this week as well. Names that I’ve heard: Rick Croy (head coach Cal Baptist), Chris Jans (head coach New Mexico State), Marvin Menzies (former head coach New Mexico State and UNLV), David Patrick (associate head coach Arkansas / former head coach UC Riverside), Eric Reveno (associate head coach Georgia Tech / former head coach Portland), and Rex Walters (assistant coach New Orleans Pelicans / former head coach at San Francisco and Florida Atlantic).

I would be very surprised if Jans took the SJSU job if offered. SJSU has a horrible basketball facility, the cost of living is high in California, and the job doesn't pay any higher than what he is making at NMSU.

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - NMSUIndyAg - 03-29-2021 06:50 PM

I’d be more worried about teams like Utah State who have some pedigree and facilities to work with. Not sure Coach Jans fits the Utah State mold or not, but if he is going to leave NMSU for something other than P5, those are the types of teams to watch out for.

NMSU has to create a situation where someone would have guarantee $750k -$1M to get him to leave. I think we are close to it.

GO AGGIES!!!!

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - Todor - 03-29-2021 06:59 PM

David Patrick would lose money leaving Arkansas, and still possibly be paid less than at Arkansas. He also voluntarily left a D1 HC job to be an assistant recently.

Croy is from the bay area originally.

Menzies coaching ability and San Jose meager expectations seem to be a match. But his recruiting ability and their lack of talent are also a match. I say they go with him as someone who can probably take them 2 solid steps forward, get them out of the perpetual MWC cellar and see where they stand in 3-4 years. Following a dude who's best record in 4 years was 7-24, and was 20-93 in that time is well within Marvs capacity.

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - Lopes87 - 03-29-2021 08:12 PM

I wanna say Menzies is still collecting a check from GCU... Not sure if he would have to forfeit that if he were to get the SJSU opening.

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - DoubleRSU - 03-29-2021 08:25 PM

If Menzies never wants to be a head coach again, he should take the SJSU job.

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - NMSUPistolPete - 03-29-2021 08:49 PM

Menzies is 59 years old, so he probably still has about 10 good years left for a college head coaching career. I'm not sure he can last that long at SJSU or use this job as spring board to anything better; starting in the dregs of the MWC. Menzies spent 9 years at NMSU and he was fairly successful during that time. It will take Menzies at least 5 years just to make SJSU respectable. To make SJSU a MWC contender would take longer than the time he has left to coach. If I were Menzies, I would look for a D1 program with a better starting point than SJSU. Of the HC jobs to still be filled, the Eastern Washington job or Lamar job would be a better fit. Ideally being a native Californian, a job in the BWC or WCC would be the best fit for Menzies. Just my opinion.

As for Chris Jans, he should hold out for a P5 job with some winning tradition to build on.

And, Croy has a better situation at CBU than what he would have at SJSU; despite the bump in pay.

If he does ever want to be a head coach again, I think his lack of options already preclude his turning down even the worst school in the MW. I 100% believe he can do better than the morons they've have been hiring for the last 20 years.

Personally, I don't think he should have been fired from UNLV after his third year. They went from 11th, to 7th, to 4th In the MW in 3 years under him. And where are they now--starting over with another new coach after a 12-15 season.

I agree with you, UNLV pulled the plug on Menzies too soon. He had the program going in the right direction. It was taking long than the UNLV Admin would like but he was loading up the Rebel program with talent. One can see that when you look where all his recruits transferred to after he left.

Brandon McCoy went Pro
Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua transferred to Baylor
Shakur Juiston transferred to Oregon
Amauri Hardy transferred to Oregon
Joel Ntambwe transferred to Texas Tech
Trey Woodbury transferred to Utah Valley
Tervell Beck transferred to Kent State
Ben Coupet, Jr. transferred to UALR
Jay Green transferred to Northern Arizona

Well-- nobody is asking this so I will.

Why in the world would Jans even consider SJSU??? (or are these just names thrown out with no real contact)

Who knows? No one believed when Jans was mentioned for the ETSU job last year (which just opened up again today, btw). But it turned out to be true.

If anyone asked him for an interview, regardless of the school, I think he would be foolish not to at least listen. I am not looking to change jobs and have no plans to leave my job, but I would listen to any offer presented to me.

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - Lopes87 - 03-30-2021 05:22 PM

Jans could be putting his name out there to get more money from NMSU or could be bad reporting imo, but San Jose isn't a terrible place to live and he has the chops to recruit kids to SJSU. I don't see him leaving and each year he stays in LC the less likely it is for him to dip anywhere.

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - Todor - 03-30-2021 08:23 PM

You don't have to "put your name out there" for people to name you. Every coach who has a winning season starts getting mentioned in SOME schools search. However realistic it may be.

Former NMSU Assistant Coach/Interim Head Coach Tony Stubblefield seems to be the leading candidate for the DePaul position.

Apparently it's a done deal now...

Stubblefield is interesting choice.

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - RobtheAggie - 04-01-2021 10:07 AM

The one year that he was the HC at NMSU was a really bad team, and not really his fault at all. I hope he does well.

The running joke at Oregon is that he isn't ever at practice and that Nike HQ gave him a office to work there instead b/c he is always there. Hope it works out for him. Something I wouldn't ignore is Dana Altman looking at UNC maybe?

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - RobtheAggie - 04-01-2021 10:37 AM

I do wonder if when the domino's fall, if Drew is still at GCU. He did a good job in a very odd season to get GCU the Conference Championship and to the NCAA. I think that one more year would be needed, but he already does have history and is a known commodity.

RE: Semi OT - General Coaching Carousel Talk - CountDooku - 04-01-2021 10:52 AM

UNC's legendary coach Roy Williams announced his retirement today. This shouldn't affect the WAC directly, but it could be the start of a few big names moving.
