Earl Grant Hired as New Head Coach at BC - mrjoolius - 03-15-2021 12:27 PM

Reports say Earl Grant hired on at Boston College

Opens up a very attractive coaching spot and also opens up the possibility of even more names getting added to the transfer portal.

That seems like a random hire, all his ties are in the southeast, but he's a solid coach.

That's kind of a misleading title, right? I thought for a minute they fired Earl Grant.

Much appreciated. :)

“ Todd Turner and Collegiate Sports Associates have the College of Charleston search. Early names here include current C of C associate head coach J.D. Powell, NC Central head coach LeVelle Moton, NC A&T head coach Will Jones, Minnesota (New Mexico?) assistant Ed Conroy (former head coach at The Citadel + Tulane), and Nova Southeastern head coach Jim Crutchfield.”

Same article had this:

“ Names at George Mason include Tennessee assistant Kim English, Winthrop head coach Pat Kelsey, and Miami assistant Chris Caputo (an assistant at Mason during their Final Four run in 2006). It appears that English is far and away the leader right now.”

More from Hoop Dirt:

“ Early names at Hofstra include Villanova assistant Kyle Neptune, current acting head coach Mike Farrelly, former Penn State, Duquesne, and LIU head coach Jim Ferry (a Long Island native). It will also be interesting to see if (when) Bryant’s Jared Grasso doesn’t get Fordham if he gets involved here.

An interesting name that I heard a few times this weekend at George Mason is Duke associate head coach Nate James. He has strong DMV connections – he’s a DC native who was a McDonald’s All-American at St. John’s Prospect Hall (MD). Sounds like Tennessee assistant Kim English and Winthrop head coach Pat Kelsey are still in play here as well.”

Levelle Moton or Will Jones would be home run hires. Although would think if Moton was leaving UNCC he'd be doing it for something higher up the ladder than the CAA.

Kim English will also make Mason really good.

If Grasso moves up the chain I wonder if he'll still use the "Offer 100+ some kids every year and hope for the best" strategy. 141 offers for 4 spots in the class of 2022

GMU hires Kim English. IMO, a great hire

I'm probably completely wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Dave Paulsen at some of our practices this next season in an advisory role. Fischer and Paulsen are very close and I'm pretty sure his buyout precludes him from coaching this year. Nice way to satisfy his basketball itch 2 hours down the road.

Kim English has to be one of the youngest head coaches in D1

He shouldn't do that. GMU would investigate that looking for any reason to cancel his buyout. A pic of him anywhere near W&M Hall would be enough to file a lawsuit.

An elaboration:

“ UMBC head coach Ryan Odom is emerging as the leader at the College of Charleston. The chatter on this one has really picked up over the past 24-hours. Pretty interesting since C of C hired CSA to help with the search – former Wake Forest + South Carolina head coach Dave Odom is an consultant for CSA (and he’s also Ryan’s dad). Sounds like the search here could be wrapped up here shortly.”

Also from that article:

- Hofstra assistant Speedy Claxton also in the mix for Hofstra’s HC spot

- Dave Paulsen may have a spot on Earl Grant’s staff at BC.

Did not realize how much CoC pays b'ball coaches.

Seems like a very good hire. He knows the area/HS coaches well, and has had a lot of success at Winthrop.

This exchange brought a flood of emotions to me. Realize what has happened. A CAA competitor has hired a coach who has been to the NCAA Tournament THREE times in the last year by doubling his salary!

Gonzaga spends money like a Power 6 school; their basketball success is directly correlated to their investment in MBB.

In the meantime we under-invest in MBB. That was the case in 2019 and it remains the case two years later. All the intervening turmoil has left us right back where we started.

I don't know where we rank in football investment against our peers in the CAA (excluding JMU, which we know invests a ton in that sport). For example where does London's salary rank in relation to other CAA football head coaches?

I'm not giving up but I am VERY FRUSTRATED!

We tried to step up our investment in men's basketball and football and everyone revolted. It might be time to give up and stop being frustrated.

We are decidedly at cross-purposes when it comes to our Collegiate Sports. There is not a shred of doubt that, if we want a higher athletic profile, basketball is the way for W&M to go, but we always stumble over the "how different should we be" thing, with the number of sports kept on board.

I, too, am frustrated. Not quite ready to give up, but definitely frustrated...
