NIT downsized to 16, no automatic bids. Tournament to be held in Dallas area. - PirateJP - 03-01-2021 10:02 PM

They’re using COVID as an excuse, but this is a big FU to smaller conferences whose regular season champ now has to win their tournament for a postseason bid.

NIT downsizes

I think it's because nobody cares about the NIT they are trying to seem cooler. It's a stupid move that hurts the athletes and helps nobody. I'm sure some management consultant was paid a lot of money to screw this up.

All at-large assures that Memphis, smu and Wichita will have the option of a post season

The only positive that I'll take from this is "the big Middle finger" to NYC and Madison Square Garden, The City and state have been beyond stupid under the guise of COVID-19

It certainly helps and it seems quite likely, but it doesn't guarantee that all three teams will all play in the NCAA or NIT, even if they were to stay healthy enough and wouldn't have to forfeit any tournament games.

Losses in their remaining conference games could knock one or two of them out of contention, and it's not clear if the selection committee would invite 5 AAC teams to play in the NCAA/NIT if, for example, Tulsa were to win the conference tournament.

....................................................................................................

This might be the NIT field if things go according to the projections of bracketmatrix.com (caveat: W-L records will change over the next two weeks, and things never go exactly according to the bracketmatrix.com projections).

SIXTEEN "OTHER AT-LARGES" (NOT CURRENTLY NCAA SEEDS):

Expect the bracketmatrix.com seedings to shift considerably when they are revised.

Possible changes: It appears that Boise St. and Seton Hall may end up in the NIT, rather than in the NCAA, and Minnesota (13-13) may not make it into the NIT.

*These teams could be knocked out of the NIT field if there are enough dark horse/upset wins in conference tournament championship games (e.g., if enough teams such as Tulsa or Dayton were to win their conference tournaments).

--Minnesota (NET=70) would probably be the first to go in this scenario, if there is just one dark/horse upset winner in a conf. championship game. Mississipi or Kentucky might be next.

^Memphis, SMU, and Wichita State are all ranked higher in the Massey Composite rankings (Memphis (#47), SMU (#49), and Wichita State (#53).

--For Xavier to be knocked out of the NCAA, according to this day's bracket matrix, there would have to be five "dark horse/upset" wins.

Texas has a lot looser gathering restrictions and the CIT has already been cancelled...I mean, who didn't think COVID would have wide ranging effects...this is just another.

A NIT with 16 teams such as these would be extremely interesting from an historical perspective:

Dayton
Michigan State
Indiana
Duke
Kentucky
Memphis
Minnesota
Mississippi
Richmond
SMU
Stanford
St. Louis
St. Mary's (CA)
Syracuse
Utah State
WKU

If the games are broadcasted during prime time, the NIT's viewership potential could be among the highest in decades.

As a fan of a one-bid league's regular season champion, yes, this sucks a little.

None of our tournament games will be a gimme, especially if we get #2 Colgate, even at our place. Heckuva season could end up without even NIT.

I can seethe NIT mirror the bowl season, a bunch of privileged, underachieving (sub .500), money grubbing boring tournament.

Texas has opened up fully. Zero restrictions for the NIT. Thread is on our board about it.

UPDATES:

Richmond lost their AAC tourney game to Duquesne, and it's now quite possible that they won't make the NIT field.

Kentucky lost their most recent game, and are now 8-15.

Michigan State is now projected to be in the NCAA tournament, albeit as a 12 seed, along with BSU, WSU, & Drake (the "last 4 in").

Seton Hall is now projected to be a 1 seed in the NIT.

Dayton (14-8; NET: #79) advanced in the A-10 tournament.

The "last 4 in" the NIT are projected by bracketmatrix.com to be: Indiana, Richmond, PSU, & Kentucky.
