Postponed COVID Games Now Scheduled - Basketball Jones - 02-18-2021 01:37 PM

The following are the COVID postponed games that are being made up for the contenders in the standings with 3 or 4 losses:

Akron at Ohio – Tuesday, February 23
Buffalo at Northern Illinois - Tuesday, February 23
Kent State at Ball State – Wednesday, February 24
Eastern Michigan at Ohio – Thursday, February 25
Central Michigan at Buffalo - Thursday, February 25
Ohio at Bowling Green – Friday, March 5

With that said, here is the following remaining schedule for those contenders:

Toledo - @Buffalo, WMU @CMU, Ball St
Akron - @Ball St, @Ohio, BG, @Buffalo, Miami
Kent St – EMU, @Miami, Ohio, @Buffalo
Buffalo – Toledo, @NIU, CMU, at Ohio, Akron, Kent St,
Ohio – Akron, EMU, Buffalo, @Kent St, @BG

In looking at the remaining schedule, it looks like Toledo has the upper hand for the #1 seed, especially if they win, which is going to be a very competitive game, tomorrow night at Buffalo. However, nothing is a given in the MAC and you still have to go out and win the games on your schedule!

Toledo can only get the top seed if Akron loses or gets a game cancelled. As of now Akron would own the head to head tie-breaker if they finish the season with the same record. I would say Akron is the only team left that controls its own destiny, but I suppose they're at the mercy of covid not cancelling their upcoming games.

without doing a deep dive, toledo played akron x2, kent x2, and bg x2. is ohio and ub x1 the difference?

and could UB and Ohio lose a slew of games or a bottom team like WMU win some to help Toledos opponent record?

SOS isn't a tie-breaker although I think it should be. Below is how tie-breakers are decided when two teams finish the season tied. You can disregard B as the MAC doesn't have divisions this year. The brings the tie-breaker to C.

If both Akron and Toledo win out, they would have the same winning percentage against Kent, Buffalo, and Ohio. The current 3-5 seeds. That brings us to the #6 seed BGSU. Currently Toledo has .500 winning against BGSU. If Akron wins out, they will have a 1.000 winning percentage against BGSU therefore would win the conference. Pretty much Akron is rewarded for losing to two bottom feeders, meanwhile, Toledo gets hurt by losing to two middle of the pack teams.

1. Between TWO teams:
A. Head-to-head competition

B. Division Record (10 games)^

C. Winning percentage* vs. ranked conference teams (top to bottom, regardless of division, vs. common opponents regardless of the number of times played)

D. Coin flip

Kind of a sour grapes comment at the end there. The MAC decided to reward winning against the best teams. It has long been that way. Because it would benefit UT this year, you think they should be deciding ties on who did not lose a game to a bottom team, instead of putting the emphasis on beating top teams.

RE: Postponed COVID Games Now Scheduled - UofToledoFans - 02-19-2021 02:02 PM

Well i hope someone just wins the league outright. I wouldnt mind being placed as the 2 and get a Nugaless Kent squad. UB may be our real bugaboo as they bang inside though. We may have to play Komagum tonight. Good luck teams jockying for position.

I feel you're confused here. It would benefit Akron this year and I'm an Akron fan. That's not me being a sour Akron fan. Personally, I feel the more logical thing would be to use conference SOS as a tie-breaker since the MAC plays an unbalanced schedule. They could decide it however they want after that.

So lose to the 11th and 12th place teams or the 6th and 7th place teams. Who is better? Both are 16-3.

RE: Postponed COVID Games Now Scheduled - pono - 02-21-2021 04:58 PM

I doubt Akron wins out if they play all those scheduled games. Toledo has a light remaining schedule. Order of seeds looks pretty clear to me
1) Toledo
2) Akron
3) Kent
4/5) Ohio/Buffalo
6) BG
7/8) Miami/Ball St

Ball State/Western game dropped today for Covid (BSU). A huge setback for BSU considering a win would have put them three games up on WMU for No. 8 w/four games to play. Now Cardinals have to probably go 2-2 to end the season to lock it up including games against Kent, Central, Eastern and Toledo.

Why is Preston not playing today?

Preston and Wilson were both i street clothes today. Both were on the bench though. No specific reason was given for either, so who knows it they just got cleared from COVID protocol too late to play or what.

RE: Postponed COVID Games Now Scheduled - kreed5120 - 02-23-2021 04:33 PM

Pretty poor showing by Akron today. The loss pretty much means Toledo will be the regular season champ as they're now a full game up and now have the head-to-head tie breaker. Toledo would need to lose twice with Akron winning out, which I don't see happening.

Saw something today that said Preston was indeed the timing clearing COVID protocols. Wilson was some kind of injury. Boals mentioned he hopes to be at full strength Saturday or shortly there after.

Preston and Wilson both back today as the Bobcats throttle EMU 86-67. Ohio 30 assists on 34 FGs.
