Your way too early 2021 CUSA FB picks - TTT - 01-12-2021 09:43 AM
West: UAB or Southern Miss
East: Marshall, FAU, or WKU
Why I think USM wins the west this year: 1. Will Hall. 2. We literally return almost our entire team & our 2 best defensive players that opted out in 2020 (LB Booth and DE Turner). 3. QB/RB/WR/OL production all return 4. A a stellar recruiting class and a swath of transfers from Ole Miss, Memphis, Louisville, and Mizzou. 4. UAB travels to Hattiesburg this year.

I think it is too early to know USM will be at the top. The pieces are falling in to place (so it appears) but too many unknowns. Every team in the west was better than us last year except NT...yes UTEP would have beat us. Let that sink in.

Will get back to you after spring practice when everyone will know who is/isn't actually going to return, transfer in, etc regardless of their situation today. Lots of backups transfer after spring practice once they realize they won't win the #1/#2 spot at their position. Players being able to transfer and play immediately will dramatically increase roster turnover for 2021.

This is an easy one! Tech will sweep to a 12-0 regular season, win the CCG, go to a NY6 bowl, win that and finish 14-0 and ranked in the Top 15, maybe the Top 10! (let me go back to bed now, my day is made ).

The west belongs to UAB until someone takes it. We, Southern Miss, should remain cautiously optimistic. Going from 3 wins to winning the west will be a challenge. I do agree, pieces are lining up nicely.
East - 2021 will be a toss up. Do believe will be between the three you named.

I think Western will be improved even with a lot of new players. Offensive should be like night and day difference. New OC and from what I've seen Coach Helton is turning the offense over to the OC.
Zappy put up CUSA all conference type numbers in 4 games this past season...Texas Tech, UNT, La Tech, and EKU. Western is also picking up Zappy's top 2 WR in the twin brothers from HB.
Western is losing a lot of defense but replacing that with experienced players. While most schools are using this years recruiting class to sign freshmen. Keep in mind that will mean you will have basically a double class of freshmen since this year didnt count....
Western is using scholarships in the portal. So far I believe its 10 scholarships and a asst coach tweeted more to come, from the portal. All from programs with very good coaching and high 247 ratings (I personally dont put a lot of stock in fb ratings outside the top players but most fans do so that's why i'm listing them) two 4 star and 5 or 6 with ratings in the 8800 to 8900 range...border line 4 star. All in spots where Western is replacing starters
Depending on transfers can be a double edge sword. You are getting mainly Jr to Sr experience but not experience in YOUR program. Another personal opinion, I think Helton is doing one of the best job in G5 on this class by using a extra class on mostly kids in the portal. It helps balance out from having a mostly Sr class of starters this past season. Also you are not carrying 50 freshmen.....
by 2023 we will see a ton from the 2021 class in the portal with most not playing a down, other than special teams. The 2021 class are freshmen just as the 2020 class

Like your optimism but USM lost at home this year to Louisiana Tech, UTSA and Rice. Those games will be on the road in 2021. The West looks to be significantly stronger top to bottom than 2 or 3 years ago.

I am not nearly as optimistic as you are. We are going to have a completely new coaching staff and still don't know if we have a QB. What about all the OL problems we have had over the last 3 or 4 years? All the other teams in this conference are getting transfers too and are working to get better. We will know a lot about this team after the first game. The Hall hire made all the sense in the world and I really hope it works for us.

I really don't think you can make an educated guess until you get a better sense of who is returning. Seniors have 3 options - play another year, declare for the NFL draft or go on with life after college, or transfer to another school.
Really, someone needs to keep an updated thread on who's staying and who's leaving, and then maybe we can offer up some guesses on how the conference might play out.

East: Who knows.
Marshall should be considered because they are Marshall, but, I believe, they lose a lot of OL talent and have a whirlwind of coaching change.
Charlotte should be considered as they have become a tough out.
FAU should be considered due to the talent that returns and that is being recruited.

Thanks for posting this. The hottest coaching seats in Texas going into 2021 have to be Seth Littrell, Dana Holgorsen, and Dana Dimel. I’m already looking forward to the Owls taking back the Bayou Bucket in 2021. And I would not be surprised to see UTSA win the West.

Dimel has a tough job. UTEP should run the option and I bet they would be competitive. Would be funny to see Dana fail. They paid him a ton to do nothing for them. There isn't any reason why Seth shouldn't be winning consistently.
