CANDIDATES
EKU - Jacksonville St. - Central Arkansas - Chattanooga - Western Carolina - East Tennessee St. - Tennessee Tech - West Georgia - Howard - Norfolk St. - UA-Huntsville - North Georgia - NCCU - West Florida - Nova Southeastern

RE: ASUN EXPANSION - lion1983 - 12-07-2020 10:31 PM

Talked to a ASUN official (not Gumbart) earlier today.

He said the goal is to invite 4 football schools and sponsor FCS football. (The UCA, EKU and JSU thing was not supposed to get out yet)

So who would be the 4th?

Also said the ASUN presidents have agreed on 14 as the number of full members.

So who would be the 4th? And if 14 is the number, who is the 5th?

RE: ASUN EXPANSION - army56mike - 12-07-2020 11:08 PM

Would the football schools be happy with such a small conference, 6-7 members?

If we’re talking current FCS programs, surely the teams must come from the group of Tennessee Tech, East Tennessee St., Chattanooga, and Western Carolina. Those teams current conferences could absorb the hit with the defection of that team and maintain conference integrity. Thise teams fit the geo and cultural desire of the ASUN. They are the only three public schools in the Southern Conference. Tennessee Tech may be the next best option from the OVC if it’s true that EKU and JSU are coming to the ASUN. The plan is not to kill off any other conference, so no MEAC school can be invited.

VMI and The Citadel are public schools as well... but they act like private schools.

6 is all you need to sponsor football, he also said there is a possibility of having a couple of associate members for football.

I'm not going to pretend I know what's going on behind the scenes, so I will not speculate on what's going on.

I just think Chattanooga is the best choice givin the football schools involved. After that, I would seriously go after West Florida.

ASUN football without associates

EKU
UCA
UNA
Chattanooga
JSU
KSU
West Florida

That alone would be a fun football league and very tough.

RE: ASUN EXPANSION - lion1983 - 12-08-2020 10:43 AM

Also, if what they are saying about the WAC happens, who knows what happens. A couple of the Louisiana schools or all of them could want an associate membership for football?

I think UNA would be happy... we like being able to schedule more OOC games, especially against the FCS "Blue Bloods". Also affords room for FBS games.

Dont know how the other schools would feel about it though.

Apparently SUU got their WAC invite per the Realignment board. So some movement is happening.

RE: ASUN EXPANSION - army56mike - 12-08-2020 01:57 PM

It’s funny how the ASUN office has gone from wanting 20 schools, to 16 schools, to now 14 schools. Will it keep shrinking until we hear, “we have the perfect 9 school setup we can have.”

I would be happy with a West Florida invite.
I’m not interested in any Louisiana teams.
I have heard University of New Orleans name thrown out on a different board, but they don’t play football.

Since I don’t really have a dog in this fight, I hope UNA and KSU get what they want for an FCS conference. EKU and Chattanooga would be cool.

However, I do want the best basketball programs available in the best areas beacuse that directly impacts Liberty.

Best options maybe. Most realistic options, is a different story...

From people I talk to who have any kind of communication with different schools, Chattanooga dont look at ETSU as a big rivalry anymore, their biggest rivalry is JSU. They would also like to start history with KSU and UNA.

ETSU people want to stay in the SoCon.

If the WAC does get the Southland schools, and the ASUN gets UCA, I dont know how the Southland will continue football. The Southland can still stay together as a conference, but I would imagine the Texas schools play football with the WAC and the Louisiana schools play football with the ASUN. So the Louisiana schools wouldn't be an all sports ASUN member anyway.

Any MEAC school would be better of staying put and the MEAC make a deal with the Big South for football memberships.

So I speculate that the ASUN targets are, EKU, UCA, JSU, Chattanooga, West Florida.
With the 4 Louisiana football schools as associates.

The ASUN would have 14 all sports with 7 full football and 4 football associates for 11 schools for football.

But it would not directly affect Liberty.... so what's the problem?

RE: ASUN EXPANSION - Fighting Muskie - 12-08-2020 06:09 PM

If the Southland really is about to take a 4 school haircut (all of them Texas football schools) would UNA and Kennesaw St be interested in just taking their athletic departments over there with UCA, all the LA schools, HBU, UIW, and A&M CC?

It’s not geographically ideal but it would be a stable, 9 football/11 basketball member conference.

While not great for the ASUN it could be good for those 2 schools.

No...

Especially if UCA, EKU and JSU have any interest in joining the ASUN...

Even if those 3 dont join the ASUN, Texas, given the schools, kills this. If it was Sam Houston and SFA, they might consider it, but still a long shot.

But the truth is, for both UNA and KSU, the ASUN with FCS football, would be the perfect conference for them. Without football, it's still pretty good.

The only problem is with my attitude toward them. I just have no interest in being associated with those schools at this point. I am sure they are good schools with a desire to succeed. I wish them the best. I just figured the ASUN was aiming for a more eastern footprint.

My scenario was for football only.... FCS... so Liberty would have no real association with them....

I know this isnt the board for this, but Liberty fans help me understand something....

Liberty was put out as an associate membership in the Big South because yall moved football out....

Why does Presbyterian, who just moved football out, not have to go to associate membership?

Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen to me...

Don’t really know. Don’t follow BSC much anymore. Maybe they figured if they offered them the same deal as Liberty they’d leave for greener pastures just like Liberty did.

This makes a lot of sense.

Assuming we add JSU, EKU, and UCA, I think UT-Chattanooga is the best 4th add for the football schools while adding a solid basketball team. I just hate how concentrated the conference is. Florida has four members, UTC makes two in Tennessee which should be the max, EKU makes two in Kentucky which should be the max, JSU makes two in Alabama, which should be the max. It feels like we are competing against ourselves with oversaturation.

I know we don't have the biggest brands but it feels like we are getting too close to each other that we infringe on each other's territory instead of filling in gaps. Obviously an Ohio State covers all of Ohio while a Liberty clearly doesn't cover much of Virginia but adding someone like JMU or Radford who is just down the road will have us competing against for the same eyeballs instead of stealing them from a Virginia Tech if that makes sense.

I don't know, I guess beggars can't be choosers but with all things being equal, I'd rather expand the footprint into an untouched area rather than doubling down on an existing one.

I agree, but that may be easier said than done.

Would JMU be interested in leaving the CAA for the ASUN even if we had football? Maybe but more than likely not.
I dont know were they like to recruit either, so our recruiting areas may be attractive?
