[split] Women's Basketball Recruiting Thread 2021 - elw4796 - 09-08-2020 04:16 PM

No real news, but this is the quote that Hunter used in a 247 article breaking down her top 10 schools.

Rice - "Coach Langley is one of the nicest people that you will ever talk to, ever meet. And the Rice education is worth a lot, a lot, a lot. And Coach Langley has turned the program around from when she got there. And seeing that she is on an upward trend, then getting a player like me I think more people will follow me to schools like Rice, Harvard, the academic schools."

Carleigh Wenzel, a 2022 who has had a relationship with the coaching staff for a few years, included Rice on a list of schools that had reached out to her (which included the likes of Stanford, Baylor, Oregon, etc.). She's ranked as the #43 recruit but could easily end up being top 10 or 20. She'll be a hot commodity but she's from Texas and as far as I can tell is decently close with Langley and co.

Unrelated to recruiting, looks like we have a new assistant coach. I would assume that means one of King or Aduddell is leaving with Alejandro just having replaced Gandy. Don't see any news yet, though.

Yeah, I guess that's not entirely surprising considering her interest in Rice. Probably the best compromise on her list for somebody looking for a big name athletics program and solid academics.

It's always a long shot when we're fighting against the big dogs, especially in WBB where the difference in attendance and program support is so stark even between the upper echelon programs and the good ones.

The big question is what Langley and co. do next. We have a couple spots left in 2021, and this is a monumental couple of years because Mulkey and Wiggins are gone next year. There's a real chance for a drop off in the future without Ogwumike, Mulkey, and Wiggins, who have provided a pretty good chunk of our offensive output and defensive tenacity. Eventually we're going to need to bring in some upper-level talent if we want to keep trying to be ranked, even if we're still competitive in CUSA without it.

Women sign 3 - Malia Fisher out of GA, Trinity Gooden out of OK and Jordan Hobbs out of OH. I think all 3 have been mentioned in this thread so I won't recap any of their details. Click on the release if you need more info on them. But according to wbbblog.com, Fisher is the marquee signing. She has 33 D1 offers including most Ivy League schools, Georgetown, Colorado, Memphis and Villanova.

Wow, I'll be honest that kind of shocks me. If you had forced me to choose one of the high-profile targets from the past few years who I thought might actually commit to Rice, it would have been her. I think she can be a superstar. Twitter never tells the full story, but it's pretty evident that she has the work ethic. I'll preface this by saying it's not a criticism, because getting top tier recruits to come to Rice is a long shot for anybody, but that's basically an 0-fer for Langley for Langley these past couple years when it comes to top 100 recruits.

Coach Langley should try to bring in a top 100 transfer.

Her brother is transferring from Utah. He was a redshirt freshman there. I don't know where he'll end up but if he comes back to the state of Texas, perhaps that will change her list of schools?

Funny, I was going to post this exact same thing in the men's recruiting thread because I thought the exact same. I'm not sure if we have a scholarship open, unfortunately. If he comes back to Texas I'd bet on a school like UTSA over us anyway. But he would fit Pera's ideal SG mold. 6-5, long, good shooter. And I'd say there'd be a chance it could bear on his sister's recruiting.

You don't think the men will have a scholarship open? Wow, you're an incredible optimist. I hope you're right but recent history suggests otherwise.

I get more worried every time Olivari has a standout game.
