Matt Lewis scoring record watch - Bill - 11-27-2020 03:20 PM

points needed to break record: 513
games left (inc. 1 playoff game): 25
avg points per game needed: 20.52

The only thing that will prevent him from getting this record is Covid19. If they get all 25 games in and he stays healthy, the record will be his.

What is the teams record over this stretch of games?

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - olddawg - 11-27-2020 04:14 PM

During the Lewis era we are 34-63.

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - JMUPride - 11-27-2020 06:24 PM

Doesn't mean anything if we finish with a bad record

27 points on 5-14 shooting isn't team ball.

Blast me all you want, but I think he'll go down as one of the most overrated MBB players ever at JMU.

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - HyperDuke - 11-27-2020 07:01 PM

Rather than focus on the negative, I’m going to say I hope he gets coached up to finally reach his potential. Setting records on a constant losing team is hard to celebrate.

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - Bill - 11-27-2020 07:34 PM

Let's face it, his first three years were played under a clueless coach with zero experience that never should have been hired in the first place. The admin's "alumni makes good" experiment is not Lewis' fault. I'm sure if Lewis could pick between a scoring record and a CAA tourney victory, he'd pick the latter. But it's unlikely that is happening. JMU let him down, I give him credit for not bailing on the program. I won't have a problem celebrating if he gets it. This program has been such an unmitigated disaster for so long that any reason to applaud is welcome.

There have been similar posts on a couple of threads now. Fourteen FGA from your best scorer is not a lot and 27 points on 14 FGAs is outstanding. All last year, we were saying he needs to attack and not settle and today he gets 14 free throw attempts.

He still needs to work on court awareness and the team obviously has a long way to go, but he was not inefficient today. In fact, I see these numbers as a positive. Matt going to the basket and causing nightmare match-ups for the opponents can only help his teammates get open looks in the long run.

Lewis shot 5 of 14. Sorry, you can’t spin that. 36% from the field is bad. His teammates should get more open looks if he’ll involve them, and they don’t stand around and watch Matt play. If this pattern doesn’t change it’s going to be a looong season.

To state the obvious, basketball is a team sport, and a “team” will beat a one-man team/star everyday and twice on Sunday.

If he had gone 8/17 from the field and 7/8 from the line, would those numbers be good, or would that still have been too many shots? If on three more of his drives, he was allowed to get to the basket, that's what we could be looking at.

Like last year, I'm more concerned about how many points we gave up. I'm assuming Christmas and Fredericks will open up the offense when they get back, too

I agree.

He needs to shoot a higher percentage from the floor, period. If you can’t see that you’re subscribing to bad basketball. It’s not about how many points one player scores, or how he gets them, when he shoots 37% from the floor and the team loses by double digits it’s bad basketball.

Let’s hope you’re correct and that getting a couple players back will help.

Again, it’s early in the season, and Norfolk is better than some JMU fans are thinking and giving credit. Still, the team completely let that game get away from them in the last 4 minutes. The losing end-game scenario was far to similar to years of losing under Rowe to be comfortable.

I trust Coach B and staff will work on how a team finishes and wins close games. Learning to win shouldn’t be something you’d think needs to be taught...but there’s an aura of JMU MBB losing that needs to be overcome. Right now, after two games on JMU’s beautiful new court there are some promising new players on the team, some questions (like our 6’10” transfer), and then there is Matt. As the acknowledged senior star he’s got to lead and get his teammates engaged.

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - JMUNation - 11-28-2020 08:28 AM

I would like to see Matt get the record. He has hung in there with JMU despite three rough seasons.

Matt is a good player on what has been bad teams. He isn’t a great player mostly because of two things. As Longhorn points out, he has always been a streaky volume shooter not one that shoots a good percentage. The second reason is that he hasn’t historically made those around him better. He is a guy that like to go one on one rather than get his points in the flow of the offense. This causes other JMU players to stand around and watch him.

For the guys critiquing the FG% yesterday just curious how many watched the game or are just going by the box score? There were a couple of bad decisions but I do think Matt has improved in terms of trying to play within himself.

03-lmfao03-lmfao this 100% even though their criticisms aren’t completely wrong

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - JMUNation - 11-28-2020 09:19 AM

NJ:

I admittedly did not watch and stated this in my other post in the game thread. My comments were based on his stat line and three years of watching Matt play. Based on comments from those that did watch, it sounded like they were seeing the same things they saw in the past with Matt and the stat line supported their point.

What did you see yesterday?

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - NJDuke97 - 11-28-2020 10:04 AM

Yesterday was disappointing. With Matt I do think it’s a gradual evolution. He’s not perfect and still makes a couple of bad decisions- but it has gotten better and he is making an effort to be more restrained, get others involved, work for a better shot. There were still too many of those possessions by the team- some can be expected by the younger guys that are still learning (Edwards, Harvey).

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - olddawg - 11-28-2020 10:43 AM

I don't mind Matt taking as many shots as he did. His "true shooting percentage" #s were very solid, due to his 3 point shooting and high amount of converted free throws. It's an advanced metric for shooting efficiency that takes into consideration 3 point percentage and ability to get to the line (and convert).

He was 5 for 14 overall, but 4-9 from 3 point line and 13-14 from the line. His TS% for the game was 66.96%. Just for illustrative purposes, Matt's percentage for the NSU game would place him 6th on the all-time NCAA career list. So that's a really good game.

What record are we talking? School? CAA?

RE: Matt Lewis scoring record watch - Bill - 11-28-2020 03:28 PM

Steve Stiepler is JMU's all time leading scorer with 2,126 points, a record that has stood since 1980.

And, I hope it remains. Steve was the best post player in school history. Great big man moves, worked his ass off to make himself available for dump down passes. Shot over 50%. Do a comparison of total field goal attempts and then see what you think.
