MBB vs ODU - Naptown Tribe - 11-21-2020 09:26 AM

Game is at 7pm per odusports.com.

What a weird year. It is so strange to be 1 week out from opening night with no talk of how the team is doing in practice and projections on lineups and such.

Does anyone have any idea how the team is looking or what our initial starting lineup will be? I wonder how the freshman look. Would imagine Loewe and Blair are locks to start along with probably Wight and I guess Scott with the 3 spot going to a freshman or Stone. Hope to see a good bit of Covington.

Thoughts? How is ODU looking?

Go Tribe! Let’s start this crazy year off with a win!

ODU got picked 5th in the CUSA preseason poll. They're a hard-nosed defense first team, but aren't great offensively, although they should be better this year than they were last year. They'll be solidly favored.

If I were to pick an expected starting lineup for the first game of the year, I'd guess Scott-Loewe-Milkereit-Blair-Wight. I'd only lock in Thornton, Luke and Quinn on that. The other two spots could be just about anybody. But we'll probably see a bunch of movement on that as the year goes on.

Fisch has talked about playing a 10-man rotation (which is quite a shift from where they've been the past, what, 3 years?) -- I'd imagine we'll even see 11: Loewe, Scott, Covington, Hermanovskis, Milkereit, Kochera, Stone, Ayesa, Blair, Wight, and Harvey will probably all get a good amount of run this year. Lots of mixing and matching of on-court combos. Looking forward to seeing a lot of new faces and development of some more familiar guys.

I think...

Loewe is a guaranteed start
Blair is an almost guaranteed start
Wight is a likely start
Scott is a likely start
Might starts: Ayesa, Stone, Milkereit, Kochera, Covington
Unlikely but possible starts: Harvey, Hermanovskis

If I had to put money on it, I’d say Fischer doesn’t start any freshman and we go with Loewe, Scott, Stone, Blair, Wight. With Ayesa first off the bench, and all 3 freshman coming in very early on.

He said that Kurt Samuels will play. I wonder who is going to be the odd men out. Given that nobody loses any eligibility this year, we have a problem in terms of scholarships next year. At least one player has to go. I'll just assume Loewe graduates and moves on, but he doesn't have to.

My lineup is:
Loewe, Scott, Stone, Blair, Wight giving the nod to returning players at the start of the season. He's said nothing but good things about Stone and Wight.

The lack of info on this year's team obvious from the total lack of media coverage...at least to date. No local
newspaper or television coverage, no articles by the Tribe Scribe, etc.

Has the PR department gone on sabbatical. We don't even get anything on the Tribe website.

I know we've got this new three-tier package that costs $$$, but is that eliminating all other info? And, by the way,
in these fraught times you would think W&M Athletics would want easy access to all information on the teams to all alums and interested folks all over the world, not have only a select few who pay for it get coverage.

I, personally, believe this whole three-tier $$$ package is ridiculous.

I would agree, but it seems as if that's more collateral for the school trying to save money -- the entirety of the sports information department, save for SID Kris Sears, got reassigned to work in other departments. Definitely hoping that as sports come back for W&M those guys get back to work for Tribe Athletics.

Good luck Tribe.

I'm hoping that we have better luck vs the new coach. Shaver was good against us...

Maybe it’s already been mentioned but it looks like the game will stream for free on the ODU website.

WM released the game notes today and Loewe is listed as “returning starter” and then there are seven names (Kochera, Blair, Scott, Harvey, Wight, Covington, Milkereit) listed under “potential starters” and then the rest are listed under “reserves.”

Ayesa and Hermanovskis just got passed by the freshmen.

Good to see Harvey's name on the potential starters list.

MBB vs ODU - ColonelEbirt - 11-27-2020 03:32 PM

I’m moderately surprised to see Stone and Ayesa in the Reserves category. Though I guess Ayesa has “sharp shooter off the bench” written all over him and probably lacks the defensive athleticism Dane wants to see in his starting 5. Stone makes sense in the Reserves group too since he barely played last year, though there’s been some buzz about him on the board so I thought maybe he’d work his way into the starting group, especially with his athleticism.

With this info, I change my projections and bring a true Freshman into the starting 5: Loewe, Scott, Milkereit, Blair, Wight.

Agree that it’s good to see Harvey in the Potential Starter group.

Surprised about Ayesa but hopefully that is an indication of how good the 4 freshmen have been in practice!

Heard Milkereit was not back to 100% yet from his surgery. Anybody heard?

MBB vs ODU - Tribeheart - 11-27-2020 04:20 PM

It's a good sign that Kochera, Milkereit, and Covington are all listed as potential starters, and not Ayesa or Hermanovskis. Indication of a talent level upgrade. If this team can light up the threes across the lineup, AND play defense, then they could surprise a lot of folks.

Guess we'll need to start a Tribe Players in the Pros for bass fishing.

I think I read somewhere that LT Hatton is supposed to be an accomplished fisherman as well.

I think that Ayesa and Hermanovskis were players that they needed to fill out the roster last season. Both were signed late. I expect that the freshmen are just better players. That's a good thing.

MBB vs ODU - mrjoolius - 11-27-2020 06:32 PM

I see Ayesa as never a starter but someone that comes in every game for a heat check. He does one thing and does it very well. When on, he can Change the complexion of a game quickly. His problem is that Kochera is also a capable sniper but also brings a great deal more to the table.

MBB vs ODU - Tribe32 - 11-27-2020 08:01 PM

I think Scott may be the sniper this year. He has legit 25 foot range. I would love to see that evolve with Covington at the point.
