CBS Ranking Bearcats #10 all time - SuperFlyBCat - 11-19-2020 04:03 PM

Cuse is 11 and Nova #9

10. Cincinnati
Record since 1938-39: 1,542-765 | Regular-season titles: 25
NCAA Tournaments: 33 | Final Fours: 6
Weeks ranked: 434 | Top-60 NBA picks: 39
POINTS: 882.4

A mild stunner in the top 10. Cincinnati may not be a top 25 team heading into this season, but since the 1940s Cincy has routinely provided Final Four-worthy teams, produced pros, been a staple in the AP Top 25 and more often than not worked its way to the top of its conference. The Bearcats have been in 23 of the past 28 Big Dances and managed to keep up with the joneses despite playing conference hopscotch, going from the Missouri Valley to independence to the Metro to the Great Midwest to Conference USA to the Big East and now in the past eight seasons, the American.

No team in this ranking's top 25 has moved around more than Cincinnati, but the school wasn't pinned down by it. That's impressive. UC won the 1961 and '62 national championships -- but it also made the Final Four in '59, '60 and '63. Through the first 15 years of the NCAA Tournament this was one of the five or six best programs in college hoops. Truth is, Cincinnati hasn't fallen off much since then. Oscar Robertson, who was NPOY in 1959 and 1960, is the GOAT of Bearcats. Other legends include Ron Bonham, Tom Thacker, Danny Fortson, Kenyon Martin and Steve Logan -- all consensus All-Americans. Gary Clark and Jarron Cumberland have been big-time guys in recent seasons, but I can't close out this capsule without bringing up Nick Van Exel and Yancy Gates, a couple of guys who define Bearcat basketball as well as anyone.

"NCAA Tournament championships (20 points)
Final Four appearances without a national title (10 points)
Regular-season titles (5 points)
Elite Eights without making the Final Four (3 points)
NIT titles (3 points)
NCAA Tournament bids (2 points)
Wins (0.5 points)
Losses (-0.5 points)
Wins over ranked opponents (0.5 points)
Weeks ranked (0.1 point)
Top-10 NBA picks (5 points)
11-30 NBA picks (3 points)
31-60 NBA picks (1 point)"

#8-11 are very, very close to each other in that ranking. UConn almost certainly would have fallen behind Villanova and Cincinnati if the NCAA tournament had been played last year. Syracuse is only a few points behind.

RE: CBS Ranking Bearcats #10 all time - UCGrad1992 - 11-19-2020 08:12 PM

Per SuperFly's link above...

1. Kentucky
2. North Carolina
3. Duke
4. UCLA
5. Kansas
6. Louisville
7. Indiana
8. UConn
9. Villanova
10. Cincinnati
11. Syracuse
12. Ohio State
13. Arizona
14. Michigan State
15. Illinois
16. Utah
17. St. John's
18. Michigan
19. North Carolina St
20. Georgetown
21. Western Kentucky
22. Arkansas
23. Notre Dame
24. Temple
25. Oklahoma St

Only one of three listed not in the P5/Big East. Not too shabby.

The Big East was ridiculous. #6 - Louisville, #8 - UConn, #9 - Villanova, #10 - Cincinnati, #11 - Syracuse, #17 - St. John's, #20 - Georgetown, and #23 - Notre Dame all in the same conference -- 8 out of the top 25 college basketball programs of all time. West Virginia and Marquette weren't far outside of the top 25.

And ironically the only conference that got 8 into the tourney that 1 year....substitute Pitt for St. Johns if memory serves me correct.

We belong in that group.

I don't have much of a problem with that list.

... except maybe Villanova.

That was the big east downfall. ACC green eyes of jealousy. Took the out Pitt and Cuse and watch the rest of the dominos fall. ACC can't be the premier football conference, but destroyed the premier basketball conference to become it.

Didn’t someone tell CBS that 1-76 should be P5+BE schools?

*sarcasm alert

RE: CBS Ranking Bearcats #10 all time - Bearcatbdub - 11-20-2020 07:54 AM

Huggs got us back in the top 10 conversation and I felt like we belonged there for most of his tenure. I don’t feel like Mick ever got us to that point perenially. Sure there was 2018, but that was it.

I want to get back there. Can Brannen get us back there?

By CBS’ metrics MC certainly did not get us there. He kept us steady though. That is all water under the bridge. Hopefully JB can kick things up a notch against Top 25 opponents, win more conference championships and advance in the tournament.

Wasn't Sean Kilpatrick a consensus All-American?

Gary Clark .... the ultimate plus player.

Agree about Mick's tenure. And I'm cautiously optimistic that Brannen can take it up a notch. I believe his style of play will attract better offensive talent.

Being in an all-time top ten is really impressive, and certainly deserved given the rich history. It's time for some fanfare locally on this too--a press release and commemoration at a home game this season. And feed it to the network guys doing games this season for a factoid they can share sometime during each telecast. I'd rather they talk about that than Skyline Chili for the ten thousandth time.

I know they've been a relatively recent powerhouse but nonetheless surprising not to see Gonzaga in the top 25.

I think a lot of that has to do with the time range and the fact that they've only ever made one Final Four in their history and only one Elite Eight before 2015. Up until very recently, they were tourney choke artists more than juggernauts.

RE: CBS Ranking Bearcats #10 all time - Bearcatbdub - 11-20-2020 12:00 PM

Anybody think Gonzaga would be on anyone’s map without Mark Few? How about UCONN without Jim Calhoun? Thing about UC is we have remained relevant with several different coaches. Sure there was the 80’s but ya know what I mean.

Only 1 Final Four

116th in all-time wins

47th in NCAA tournament appearances

They've been consistently top-25 under Mark Few, but they were pretty bad before that. Their first NCAA tournament appearance was 1995.

They're a top 10 program under Mark Few. They have to do it under other coaches to move up much higher historically.
