UC QB situation (Ridder v Bryant) - doss2 - 09-28-2020 10:22 AM

Seems 90% of the Ridder support is "We have won despite his play."

To date this year Ridder has not shown any improvement in his poor passing. Did little with his feet vs Army.

If Ridder starts missing vs USF bring in Bryant.

This is a game we should clobber them early and often. I’d like to see the coaches tell both guys that no matter what Des gets the 1st 3 series and then Bryant comes in for 3.

This is the right approach. Heck, maybe it makes Ridder step up and get to that next level like many of us had hoped he would.

I'm in agreement and I would be surprised if this doesn't happen in some version or another. The postgame video I linked in the Army game thread alludes to Fick wanting Bryant to get some game time under the right conditions. It would seem the new conference bottom feeder USF is the right time.

RE: UC QB situation (Ridder v Bryant) - rath v2.0 - 09-28-2020 11:04 AM

Fick said the same things last year and then Bryant pretty much held a clipboard until injury forced their hand.

And I’m tired of hearing CLF is loyal...loyalty is owed to guys down the depth chart too.

Everyone loves the backup QB, until he plays 2 or more games and you realize why he is the backup.

While I was perplexed how a QB with his experience keeps missing WR, he does give UC a good chance to win. We all know we are in trouble against the better teams if he can not improve his accuracy.

Football gods have given us a pretty ideal October to get Bryant legitimate reps and see if he can be the guy. Really hoping they pull the trigger before we get Memphis.

Yeah, the Army game was about the biggest difference I've ever seen between the quality of a QB and the quality of the rest of the team.

Even a lot of his completed passes were because the receivers made outstanding adjustments to their routes. I saw at least 3-4 catches that last year's receivers wouldn't have even touched.

Extremely impressed with Michael Young.

As the position coach, at some point Gino needs to step up. If our QB coach watched that game and still thinks Des is the best QB on the roster...egads.

OR, the QB coach is not up to the task (I honestly don't know the answer to this).

Gino has been an ace recruiting, can't speak for his coaching. UK hides Morrow at a random position cosch and pay him 1.2 mil

Honest question, is Des now better than Senior Hayden Moore? Or did Des get the chance against UCLA because he had more of the QB intangibles?

RE: UC QB situation (Ridder v Bryant) - rath v2.0 - 09-28-2020 12:29 PM

Moore was a hot mess in nearly every high pressure situation he faced.

Des got the chance by default.

If Bryant is what we think he is, it’s inexplicable if he doesn’t get at least a chance if the guy in front him continues to sputter.

Moore was a turnover machine. In his junior season he threw 9 INTs and fumbled the ball 6 times. In that UCLA game his senior year he fumbled the ball in one of his two possessions. On top of that Moore had this knack for turning the ball over at the worst positions, either down inside our own 20 yard line instantly putting the other team in scoring position or turning the ball over down on the opponent's goal line negating a score.

Des is better than Senior Hayden Moore. He played admirably in that VT game (and he did turn it over in that game as well) but I think VT was not very good that year-- we would have won more comfortably is Des did not go down.

Take the running game away, forcing the offense to throw, Des is erratic at best. Saturday's game showed us that yet again. Expect other teams to do the same defensively - it's not like this is a secret. Also, can Dembrock not be any more predictable? The play calling looked like they were content on being passive and to let the defense win the game when they went up by 10, only to get lucky on a blown coverage on the Doaks TD. Defense did their job, the offense will be the limitation of this team again this season.

I liked Hayden Moore early; I always wondered if he would have been good if he hadn't gotten gunshy due to poor protection from his line and playcalling.

With Des we've got an elite runner and below average passer. He's 30 games in any change in that will only be marginal. The two relevant questions are can you be a top 10 team from a G5 conference without a guys who's a top of his conference caliber QB? Most of those teams have really elite QB. The other question is do we have an upgrade on the roster? Most of us who would like to see Bryant get a chance with the 1s were encouraged by his start at Memphis last year even though mistakes were made. It was his first start and he was on the road against the conference's best team. A week later a healthy Ridder had the exact same result (close loss) in his 25th or so start.

Now that it looks like the WR excuse is going away it makes sense to have a QB who can take advantage of that.

I don't agree with that. Dez is an explosive runner, particularly if he gets a head of steam but he isn't great at making people miss and he isn't the best decision maker on when to run. His speed gives us an opportunity for big plays from the QB run, but I don't think he's anywhere close to elite as a runner.

Not sure what elite means anymore m, but I don't think Des is elite at running. Pretty good and crafty, but is not in the top tier.

Right, so point being that the coaching staff has made the big change before and they did so in favor of a guy who isn't exactly lighting the world on fire 3 years later. I have to think they're talking about it quite a bit.
