I too was interested when I saw this; curious that they were included in these publicized reports without context.

Also makes me think about how Title IX would have come into play there -- with softball a women's sport, and rowing obviously men's/women's, especially given the doubled up scholarship total for that line item.

Interesting to read #3 and #4 in this list. Especially the suggestion of Softball and M/W Rowing...

(Revised this morning after a closer look at the numbers)

I wish I had time to pore over this stuff in detail, but here are a couple quick thoughts:

From W&M's 9/3 "Open Letter to the William & Mary Community":

Quote:"William & Mary Athletics has calculated the annual budget to support these seven sports at a nationally competitive varsity level would be $5.84 million annually. The endowment immediately needed to fund these programs at this level would be approximately $150 million. That sum would endow only annual operating costs ...."

Similarly, from the Athletic Department's 9/3 FAQ document:

Quote:"In order to retain these seven programs and support them in a manner that will allow them, along with all 16 of our remaining programs to compete at the highest level possible, an endowment of at least $150 million would be necessary."

Note a couple things here:

1) They don't say "support them in the manner in which they have competed in the past." They say "support them in a manner that will allow them ... to compete at the highest level possible." In other words, if it can't be done like UNC would do it in terms of full scholarship support, etc., then it's not worth doing at all. (We saw similar thinking on the capital improvements/facilities side -- "if we can't have a new natatorium, what's the point of having a swim team?"). Basically, they set an excessive goal, then after minimal effort failed to meet it, and cut the teams.

2) These are on top of the basic assumption that "In order to [be] retain[ed]," the operations of these seven sports -- unlike any of the other 16 -- would have to be fully funded by income spun off from endowments.

Maybe it's in there somewhere, but it would be interesting to see the actual operating budgets for the seven sports in recent years, for comparison to the "gold plated" versions on which the endowment total seems to have been calculated. Perhaps there's a clue in the fact that the Athletics Department projected $5.84 million per year as the cost to keep the sports, but projects only $3.66 million per year in savings by cutting them. Anyway, I can pretty much guarantee the number required to fund them (with modest improvements over current levels rather than "highest level possible" support) wouldn't be $150 million even if an "all dollars must be from endowments" model is used.

Interesting, but not surprising, when you read through the bios of the BOV.

We made those predictions based on the PICTOR Report and the Strategic Plan -- the writing seemed to be on the wall then; COVID ultimately accelerated the movement.

Definitely interested in this, but if admin is as adamant about the finality of the changes, this may ultimately be a PR move.

They want everyone to believe this is a fait accompli and to move on quickly, but rest assured if enough supporters express outrage and vote by pulling financial support this can and will get reversed. I suspect Huge would be fired or resign if she gets over-ruled and I’m more than fine with that as well. The stakeholders were ignored and left out of the decision to fundamentally change the structure and mission of the AD. Huge was hired to steward Tribe athletics not treat it like her personal play thing to be molded to look like every other DI athletic department in the country. Time to be heard...

Take a look at the giving numbers from 2019 as posted by the Tribe Club. It was down an enormous amount. Not just basketball either.

Also It is classic to pin it on Pictor, etc. She most certainly told them her ideas and they were paid to support them

Looking at Swimming and M/W Track, the percentage and dollar increases from 2019 to 2020 is very impressive.

I write to share my reply more broadly, because the issue of concern – repeating language from another institution’s announcement – matters to me and our community.

The open letter announcing these decisions did not rise to William & Mary’s standards, as Athletics Director Samantha Huge has shared, and this was a mistake.

To support that process, I have asked Gen. Jim Golden, W&M’s long-time former vice president for strategic initiatives and assistant to the president, to help guide strategic communications in Athletics in the near term. His immediate charge will be to partner with Director Huge to review Athletics communications practices, improve them, and ensure we speak to the concerns of the William & Mary Athletics community at this critical time.

Not good enough, President Rowe.

What if she throws a 10% off coupon for your next purchase of Tribe apparel on top?

Oh I read the letter the other way. Huge's lost everyone's trust. At no point does Rowe give her a vote of confidence or support her and Gen. Golden is here to ease the transition process when/if it comes to that.

I sure hope you are right. I have always said she had her own agenda not the Tribe's!!!
