W&M Cuts 7 Sports - NoBidNation - 09-03-2020 03:02 PM

Men's/Women's Gymnastics, Men's/Women's Swimming, Men's Indoor and Outdoor Track, and Volleyball are all cut at the end of the '20-21 year. This sucks.

What a terribly sad day. Condolences to alums and current student athletes for all programs.

It took a pandemic for W&M to admit the math didn't work.

W&M Cuts 7 Sports - WMInTheBurg - 09-03-2020 03:10 PM

Anyone looking for the numbers, they're in this announcement. Annual deficit of over $3M, which was reduced this year by AD, football and basketball coaches taking a voluntary pay cut. IMO, the transparency is a little late, but it's all in the report.

This is disappointing all around, though admittedly not a surprise at this point. P5 schools were cutting sports left and right, not sure why I had thought we would be immune

Reading the release at least they're honoring scholarships if athletes choose to stay here, and will help them transfer for those who want to leave

Very very very few of those sports offer scholarships. Did I say very?

this is sad and unfortunate...

but I have to think it makes sense. We are sponsoring more sports than schools 2-3 times our size.

It can be crappy and the right decision at the same time.

That was my positive/honorable takeaway of a tough, reality bites situation. Explains why any talk of a natatorium went by the wayside last spring.

Maybe not the best time to bring up on the heels of the announcement, but Zable will no longer need the track, so....

And, don't blame Huge...that would be akin to blaming Trump for the COVID-induced economic despair. Totally unavoidable.

Men's track and field is gone but Women's is still around so track is still needed

Yeah, I haven't always been the biggest fan of hers but I agree. Seems like they did this in about as "good" of a way as possible.

Even though there aren't a ton of scholarships here, they're still honoring them. They did try to raise private funds, but weren't able to. The AD and other coaches are also taking paycuts to help with the deficit.

Edit: I realize now Tribal may have been sarcastic, but I stand by what I said

It had to happen, sooner or later. 20+ sports teams are only for D-III schools, without much money tied up in the programs and P-5 schools, who pay for the extra programs through their FB revenue.
I was a bit surprised by some of the choices, however. Why keep half a Track program? Why is Men's and Women's Golf still kicking??

Women's track is still supported

Why is WLAX still kicking? That's the question.

Gymnastics costs very little and they raise most, if not all, of their budget.

I'm not/not saying we should've maintained every sport but we certainly spent an unnecessary fortune over the past few years. And, I agree, if we're going to cut track, cut both and keep WVB to jive with Title 9.

Sad day to be a Tribe fan. Not that this is relevant but some of the sports being cut have been very successful and they should be proud of their accomplishments on a shoestring budget! Unfortunately, cuts will be happening everywhere.....
