Yep very disappointing outcome for us.

RE: EMU Football vs Kentucky on September 3rd - emu steve - 07-31-2020 03:46 AM

I have a lot of legal and sports questions about this stuff:

1). SEC is canceling OOC games and going to a 10 game conference. That sounds like a breach of contract to me. Can't cancel one game to add another without being in breach of contract.

2). Many sports writers are suggesting that the P5 guys want to do away with these expensive OOC games and add more conference games IN THE FUTURE, TOO.

3). Don't many schools have OOC games scheduled say 5 or 10 years ahead?

4). I hope the G5 conferences have good lawyers to navigate schools through this sea change (if it happens).

RE: EMU Football vs Kentucky on September 3rd - emu steve - 07-31-2020 06:56 AM

Now we need to figure out if EMU, wants and can, reschedule a game for opening weekend?

E.g., EMU and Kent both lost a game on Sept 26 to SEC schools. Add a 9th conference game?

Can we move up the Miami game (last weekend of the season) to the first game if MIA's game with Pittsburgh is canceled.

I just don't think MAC teams, including EMU, want byes in September (and especially the opening week) and be playing the day after Thanksgiving.

What other G5 schools need to replace games the first and third weekends????

The MAC has work to do. LOT of work to do.

I think the most likely of outcomes will be all the conferences end up going conference-only for this year, meaning we play all MAC schools. It seems like most conferences are going to a 10 game conference schedule. What I'd like to see the MAC do is play an 11 game MAC-only schedule, that way everyone plays everyone and we'd get a true MAC champion...would be kind of fun I think.

That does lead to two more questions:

1) What happens to Army (asking since we have them on the schedule this year)? Not just them but all independent schools? Will Army join a conference for a year (like Notre Dame and the ACC)? If so, the AAC would make some sense for Army. If not, would we be allowed to have an extra game and play Army?

2) How will bowl eligibility work this year? If teams are (on average) playing 10 games the season what will be the "magic win number" for a bowl? I'd assume five or six?

?????????????????

I do not see it. They were but that was when 'Hector was a pup' (that's an old expression).

BTW, here is Army's schedule.

I assume they will have 3 games cancelled, the first two + Oklahoma.

IF the fall season goes off, I can't see bowl games happening. The safe travel and lodging logistics aside, how do you do a Bowl game with no crowd? And a large part of the Bowl experience is all the activity the week leading up to the bowl game. How do you do that in a socially responsible manner (and I'm sure the players would be restricted from it all)? And who accepts the liability if 100 people come down with COVID after being at one of these events? I can see sponsors wanting to stay MILES away from that. I just don't see bowl games working.

Perhaps some of the larger marquis Bowls might be able to pull something off. But I can't see the smaller bowls making it happen fiscally.

Unless a viable vaccine/treatment is available within the next few months.

RE: EMU Football vs Kentucky on September 3rd - emu steve - 07-31-2020 12:28 PM

BTW, the SEC is to begin Sept 26 which is 3 weeks after the expected beginning (the weekend of Sept 5).

I would love to see the MAC and other G5 conferences flood the airways with games while the P5 are sitting it out.

God knows people are hungry for it. It's a shame the crowds will be restricted...EMU would be attractive to all football fans in the Metro-Detroit region if it played 3 weekends before the B1G even got out of the gates.

I would, for example, like to see the MAC move EMU / MIA up to the first weekend and vacate the Thanksgiving weekend.

The MACC can be played the scheduled weekend and the teams have two weeks to prepare.

I understand and agree with your point about the bowl week experience and playing bowl games in empty stadiums. I disagree with them not happening though.

Most bowl games are not super well attended outside of the big games or if you have a situation like us playing down the road in Detroit. The networks make a ton off ad revenue and sponsorship during bowl season and thus the conferences make a ton off their bowl TV deals. So yes they might lose out some on ticket sales but I think they'd still make money.

They probably wouldn't have any of the bowl week stuff, it'd be a stick business trip. Teams would probably get into town the day before, play the game the next day, get out of town after the game. Like a regular season game.

It would really suck for the players to lose out on all that, and probably wouldn't be worth it in a vacuum. However, I'm sure the networks (ESPN) and conferences will do everything they can to keep that money coming in.

There is an old saying in politics, "never let a good crisis go to waste' (by not taking advantage of it.)

The P5 schools don't like that they have to compete hard for G5 OOC games and pay through the nose for them.

By going to 9 or 10 conference games means less payouts because most of the leverage (supply/demand) for G5 opponents would be gone.

Should be interesting if the P5 schools start canceling future G5 OOC games and move to 10 conference games.
