Hank Aaron died 18 days after taking the vaccine. The good news is, "they" say it was only coincidental to his death.

1. J&J’s single shot vaccine is 66% effective per study.

2. Generally safe and well tolerated

3. J&J will seek approval early next month.

4. J&J can ship millions of doses right away and produce a billion shots by the end of the year.

5. It uses a modified virus behind the common cold to deliver a gene from the coronavirus. The gene instructs human cells to make a protein resembling the spike protein found on the the coronavirus’s surface.

Thanks, add a couple of things -

This is the J&J single shot -- they also have a two dose study on going.

The single shot was about 55% effective in the South Africa portion of the study. Because of the variant there?

50 plus days post vaccination 100% had produced antibodies. Prior to 50 days less than 100%.

1. The J&J vaccine can be stored two years at minus 4 degrees and for at least three months in a standard refrigerator

2. It is 85% effective against severe CV-19 cases.

Linked is the Novavax phase 3 efficacy data published yesterday. If you read down into the press release you will see that the Novavax vaccine is 96% effective against classic Coronavirus but only 49% effective against the South African variant. That variant now accounts for 90% of the cases in South Africa. There's also a lot of HIV infections in South Africa which may have brought that number down some - mentioned in the press release.

The Sputnik V peer reviewed results. Over 91% efficacy. Three deaths in the vaccine arm the study. Two were diagnosed with covid-19 *within 5 days* of the first dose (this is a 2 dose vaccination) and the last from a pre-existing, non covid-19 related problem. The two covid deaths were deemed to be already infected prior to the vaccinations. Another very good vaccine to help vaccinate the 7 billion plus people on the planet :)

Johnson & Johnson submits single-dose COVID-19 vaccine candidate to FDA for emergency use authorization.

FDA approval is expected (perhaps within 3 weeks).
J&J should be ready to ship vaccine upon FDA approval.
66% effective in global trial and 72% in USA, but 85% effective against severe disease

Here is a 2/10/21 update of the status of vaccines other than Pfizer and Moderna in the USA (https://www.pharmacytimes.com/news/expert-says-release-of-the-johnson--johnson-single-dose-covid-19-vaccine-will-change-the-conversation).

In sum:

J&J - awaiting expected FDA emergency authorization.

AstraZeneca - in phase III. Already used in the UK and other countries.

Novavax - in phase III. Data may be available by end of March 2021 (https://www.novavax.com/covid-19-coronavirus-vaccine-candidate-updates)

"Second generation" vaccines may be available within a year.

I am in the Novavax trial. I got my second dose Wednesday. It beat me up a little bit, but nothing too bad. My arm is still slightly swollen and warm.

"Pfizer Vaccine Is Highly Effective After One Dose and Can Be Stored in Normal Freezers, Data Shows"

The peer reviewed study states one shot is 85% effective in preventing symptomatic disease after 15 to 28 days. The implications are quicker and more vaccinations and normal freezer storage means greater accessibility to places without the "super freezer" infrastructure.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/single-dose-of-pfizer-vaccine-is-85-effective-israeli-study-shows-11613723218?mod=hp_lead_pos2

As an aside, the number of Tennessee hospitalizations reported today (973) is the lowest since 10/5/20 (908). It represents a 71% drop since the highest recorded amount of 2,344 on 1/6/21. I read many experts predict a surge in January and February and now they can only speculate on the reasons for the welcome decline.

The Surge was a result of the Holidays, and to be expected, with 2 peaks one the last 2days of Dec running thru the first 2 or 3 days of Jan... or 6 to 10 days after Christmas, with a slight drop off and another spike 6 to 10 days after that which was New years eve. It has been a slow steady decline since, and we are now back to where we were just before Thanks Giving. Those who act like there is any surprise in how this acts are just not paying attention.

I should have excluded February. I should learn by now not to rely on memory. 03-wink

The source for my statement is Here. The take home quote follows:
Quote: The slowdown comes just as Piercey and virus experts were expecting the opposite. The United States was predicted to suffer a post-holiday surge in mid-January as a result of gatherings in December, and while some states surged as predicted, Tennessee did not. It's been nearly a month since Christmas – more than enough time for a surge to surface – and yet virtually all virus metrics continue to drop, not climb.

But why? For now, it is a mystery.

In Tennessee, we are back to early October 2020 hospitization levels. I am unsure about other states.

Regardless, it is good news seeing the trend decline and the good news about vaccines continues, also. Furthermore, at least one expert (a John Hopkins professor and MD) thinks herd immunity could be reached by April (https://www.wsj.com/articles/well-have-herd-immunity-by-april-11613669731). Let's hope he is right.

Novavax is going to do a cross blind study, so people quit dropping out of the study. Basically means you get both the actual vaccine and the placebo.
