Covid Spikes... possibility of no college football? - CardinalJim - 06-22-2020 04:16 AM

Anyone else getting the feeling with these Covid spikes being reported, that our college football season this year is in jeopardy?

Yeah, when the next controversy will be people taking the vaccine for the thing or not. This thing isn’t staying down, not even for a warm season.

With no national policy, it's on a state by state basis whether or not to put an effective policy in place. With Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Texas, among others, electing not to at this point in time, the SEC season is certainly in jeopardy.

Football is the hardest one to run during the epidemic, even in closed stadiums, due to the size of the squads ... and with national recruiting for the big schools, the effect of the big southeast hot spots now developing are obviously not going to be restricted to the southeast.

North Carolina has reported 1,212 deaths.
52,801 total cases.
29,219 recovered......no mention of the outcome of the other 23,000 cases.
745,775 tests given.
845 hospitalized.

I sure hope not. I've come to the opinion that the societal and economically destructive general "lockdowns" of March - May were a huge overreaction, causing tons of collateral damage without much benefit in terms of reducing deaths. Media-driven sensationalizing, and now we are seeing it again in reaction to these recent post-protest "spikes".

Places like Japan and Sweden had the best approaches, though Sweden did a bad job of protecting its nursing homes. Our policy should be a general re-opening with targeted lockdowns at nursing homes and assisted care facilities to protect the vulnerable.

So I hope we can play football despite these 'spikes' in places like Texas and Florida. So far, I don't see any spikes in deaths. Doesn't really matter if a "case" consists of someone coughing for a few days.

What spikes?

Yesterday there were 267 deaths reported in the USA, the lowest since March 23rd.

There has been a steady decline in the number of deaths ever week since April 25th. The numbers in June are 1/2 the numbers in May, and the numbers in May were 1/3 the numbers in April.

The media is scaring you with misleading statistics. Remember, spikes in 5 states means that 45 states stayed steady or declined.

You have to remember - according to the sensationalizing media reports, its "cases" that matter, because that makes everything look bad, which politically hurts you-know-who.

Can we hold elections on Labor Day so we can have football and a fall semester?

Not sure where you're getting your "five spikes, 45 steady/drops" information from. It's being reported that 12 states have had single-day records for new cases since Friday, and that 17 states are seeing rises in hospitalizations. And 23 states have reported an increase new cases in the past two weeks, with six states plateauing and 20 dropping as the U.S. experienced back-to-back days of 30,000+ new cases Friday and Saturday for the first time in nearly two months.

Obviously the states that had earlier peaks are dropping, but consider this: Cases are on the upswing in Southern states in June, which either goes against the CW that the virus would abate in warm weather, or the South could have been in real deep crap if this was winter.

I'm not saying this means we have to go back into indefinite lockdown; I don't think people have the patience to go through that again, even if it means less stress on medical infrastructure and a better chance at stemming a death toll that's about to hit 120,000. I'm not even saying we can't have football, though I wouldn't dismiss the possibility out of hand. What I'm saying is that despite the public's lack of patience waiting for the season finale, this thing has a lot more steam left.

This is the second time i've heard someone say something similar in the last few weeks. You can't look at the number of deaths yesterday and compare it to anything, ever. Deaths from yesterday are still being reported. Likely end up in the 700's.

A couple of things you won't hear in the mainscream media:

1. Both deaths and rate of positive tests are going down.
2. New cases are skewing a lot younger than they were, which means less saturation of hospital beds and ICUs.

Neither of these things are true in the states that are seeing "spikes". Nationally, I don't know.

Are Texas, Arizona, and Florida among the states you're talking about?

Doesn't matter if there are more young people testing positive. Hospitalizations and positive test rate is rising in Arizona.

Anyone think we'll get the first week or two of games before $hit hits the wall?

Greg Abbott isn't closing football in Texas. That's the ticket to not getting reelected in 2022.

All I get from that data is that the older people are likely isolating themselves better. The age dropping from 65 to 35 is a good thing, and tells me that a lot more cases are being discovered where there are less significant symptoms.

Record numbers of hospitalizations (we keep hearing that here in NC) can be a misleading statistic because there are also a record number of hospitals reporting. Just like record numbers of people testing positive should be expected when there are also record numbers of people testing. Give us all the data, people.

Not a shock to me. With the media hyping up these homemade masks as being the equivalent of a level A hazmat suit and the people wearing the useless things are ignoring any concept of social distancing and are constantly fidgeting with these Petri dishes they are wearing on their face then contaminating everything else they touch.
