Men’s soccer - Duke Dawg - 06-15-2020 12:18 PM

Looks like we hit a home run with the men’s soccer hire a few years ago.

Not only an elite eight run, but latest signing class is ranked 20th in he country by one list.

Could be another nationally relevant program in the valley for years to come.

RE: Men’s soccer - Anders - 06-15-2020 02:33 PM

Definitely excited to watch some more men’s soccer this season and I’m not even really into soccer that much. The tournament run was a lot of fun to watch last season. Not to take a random shot at men’s basketball, but I had way more fun watching the some of those thrilling soccer games that came down to a save by the keeper or shot in the final minutes than most of the MBB regular season.

Agreed that Coach Zazenski is looking like a huge steal for our program. Any buzz circulating around our seniors being drafted by MLS teams or picked up overseas after this season?

RE: Men’s soccer - AssyrianDuke - 06-15-2020 03:39 PM

Manuel Ferriol (M) was drafted by FC Dallas in their last draft. Not sure about any other JMU guys getting picked up last year. Looking ahead, GK Matt Bush might have a chance to play professionally; he's been great for the past couple seasons and should be stellar again this year.

RE: Men’s soccer - Dukes84 - 06-16-2020 04:02 PM

Didn't this program recently make the Elite Eight, losing to MI State on the road? Must have been following 2018 season. They're a legit program to be sure.

RE: Men’s soccer - AssyrianDuke - 06-16-2020 05:34 PM

They lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament this past year to Campbell in a very strange game. I say strange because they were only outplayed twice this year - once against eventual runner up UVA and the Campbell game. While we lose a lot of seniors, including three big minute players in Manuel Ferriol, Brandon Clegg, and Tim Estermann, we have a solid group of young players, including Clay Obara (Soph this fall) and obviously a great recruiting class. We will need to replace Ferriol's goal scoring (16 of our 36 total), but I think we have the talent to have multiple players step up, rather than just one player (similar to how our WBB replaced Dawn Evans and Precious Hall by committee). This fall will certainly be an exciting one for JMU sports.*

* Disclaimer: Assuming games are played.

I'm not really a soccer viewer, but they struggled beating uncw being up a man for a long portion of the game. They were not quite the team they were the year before. Future still very bright though.

Are you talking about the UNCW game in the CAAT? That seemed to me like they didn't have that killing stroke. The 2018 team's offense was more balanced, while the 2019 team relied too heavily of Ferriol to create chances for himself and others. In 2018, we had three players with around 20 points (assists + 2*goals) - Ferriol with 23, Carson Jeffris with 20, and Aaron Ward-Baptiste with 19. They had 9, 8, and 7 goals, respectively. In 2019, Ferriol had 38 points (16 goals); the next highest was Tyler Clegg with 10 (4 goals). Hopefully, the 2020 squad resembles the 2018 squad in terms of their offensive balance.

Off topic to JMU I'm guilty here, but check out this rocket from American Christian Pulisic in Chelsea's win yesterday...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oX_9U9BV1zY

WOW! He has been stellar after the EPL started back up and he was able to recover from an injury while EPL was down.

Once the USMNT ever gets back going, I hope he brings this kind of stuff to the table. CONCACAF World Cup qualifying (The Hex) originally scheduled to get started in September I think is going to be moved back into 2021. Not confirmed, but just guessing. In fact, FIFA, CONCACAF, and all federations are going to have one heckuva headache trying to figure out schedules for qualifications to various global tournaments. The 2022 Qatar WC, which IMO should've never been approved to be there but that's a different subject for a different thread/time, being moved back to December to help with extreme heat, is already a nightmare as-is as far as scheduling goes as it breaks into the professional leagues in Europe and a lot of the globe. What a mess.

yea, he's been doing great for them since the restart.

the US is finally developing some attacking players.

Pulisic and Gio Reyna (17 year old son of Claudio) look to be the future of USMNT

RE: Men’s soccer - Anders - 07-08-2020 10:48 AM

The current policy on international students and athletes returning home would completely wreck NCAA soccer, right?

RE: Men’s soccer - AssyrianDuke - 07-08-2020 10:52 AM

It would play a part in soccer, but I think tennis will be more impacted. I saw that Columbia and NYU are offering a one credit in person course for all international students to allow them to stay. I think other schools might look at something like that as an option.

It would indeed have a significant effect on M&W SOC. And, on volleyball. I think the policy you are stating is if classes are relegated to online-only, correct? I'd hope the universities will successfully push back on all that. I'm more concerned about Americans spreading the virus than others right now. I'd be willing to bet international students will be more diligent than what I'm seeing in the U.S. right now. Also, international S-A's should be tested diligently just like their American teammates.

It's just more nationalistic BS, IMO.

Fantastic! When you look back at his dad, Ben Olsen, and so many others as well as Head Coach Bruce Arena of course, and it is easy to see why UVA was a dynasty in MSOC much of the 90's.

College soccer may never again have an impact on pro and USMNT soccer like the UVA teams from 1987-1997...Claudio Reyna, John Harkes, Jeff Agoos, Ben Olsen, and Tony Meola (12 WC squads between them) just to name a few. Plus about a dozen MLSers. I wish JMU could have a run even half as good.

perhaps and for the impact.....what exactly did US Men's soccer accomplish on an international stage?

Reyna lead team including Agoos & Meola (3rd keeper) made it to the quarterfinals losing to runner up Germany based on a CAA level ref jobbing on a missed hand ball which would have put us up a man and with a penalty kick to equalize in the last 5 minutes of the game. We were bossing Germany the whole game aside from their lone score...I guarantee we make that PK and then were playing South Korea for a chance to lose to Brasil in the finals. Reyna also make the WC Best 11 All Star team. https://talksport.com/football/377386/2002-world-cup-all-star-team-players-best-south-korea-japan/

That was our best showing since we finished 3rd in the 1930 WC.

Ok, so the 'Huge' impact was the men's national team made it to the WC quarterfinals and lost. Got it.

It would be the equivalent of getting to at least the Elite 8 in the NCAAs, with your coach, point guard, sixth man and a reserve player all coming from one high school. Not a bad showing. My point was more that now college soccer has even less of an impact on pro and national team than it did back then that we'll never see such a dominant dynasty again.

Five (5) of the new recruits are from other countries. Given some of the COVID-19 related rules/guidelines for international travel (some coming from the Trump administration concerning foreign students, some coming from foreign governments concerning travel to and from the U.S.) I wonder how this will impact the MS program.

The travel rules right now are a mish-mash that vary by country. The overall environment isn't great, and there is likely to be some impact on one or more players. Would have to look at where each of these recruits are coming from. The travel rules are also evolving/changing. Most of the time you can return to your home country, the difficulty would be for them to get here. In some cases flights are also scarce and expensive.

What I've seen is there are some cases where workaround are possible, for instance with a 14 day quarantine period, or by taking a test. In some cases you can travel to a third country first, wait 14 days, and then go. But its definitely a mess, and I'm not sure if its as easy to work around for the countries who are banned from entering the US.
