That’s pretty cool, be interesting to see the results. I’m not sure how many of those teams would want us (NMSU) in their conference. Anyone familiar with NMSU or who really follow college basketball know what we bring to the table. Unfortunately I’m afraid most of those teams remember us for our terrible FB program as our days in the sun belt weren’t exactly stellar in MBB.

Interesting. I think most everyone is in agreement that breaking up the SB and Conf USA into regional conferences is a logical path forward

Nice. Thanks for inviting us to vote and then providing the results.

Texas State fans generally liked having NMSU in the the Sun Belt.

I wish you would have been a full member for court and diamond sports.

WAC West – Dixie State, Southern Utah, U̶T̶E̶P̶ (WTAMU), New Mexico State
WAC East – Abilene Christian, I̶n̶c̶a̶r̶n̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶W̶o̶r̶d̶ (SFA), Tarleton State, H̶o̶u̶s̶t̶o̶n̶ ̶B̶a̶p̶t̶i̶s̶t̶ (Sam Houston)

If we end up going the FBS route, I'm with gymrat that this is it. Start with 8, grow from there.

Yep. I went to MTSU undergrad. When we first went D 1A (now FBS) in 1999, NMSU and Idaho were in the Belt with us. They were a quality opponent.

When half the Belt bolted to the CUSA only to have most of the premier teams of the league go to the AAC, we felt like it wasn’t all that difference. I actually would rather have played old rivals like Arkansas State and Troy.

But yes... I think you’re right. Very comparable level teams. A regional split makes sense. Marshall and ODU don’t have much chance of a rivalry with UNT or UTEP. Now NMSU... Makes sense. UTEP, Texas State, NMSU, UNT, Rice... that would be a fun division to watch.

Yes for the life of me I can't understand why UTEP and NMSU aren't in the same conference. As others have pointed out, there is some deep-rooted drama there and it will never happen. Makes a ton of sense though.

Per Utah State Fans, when UNM, UTEP, Utah, and BYU were in the WAC (as far back as the 1960's) they would advocate to keep NMSU and USU out of the conference. UNM and UTEP were against USU and Utah and BYU were against NMSU. That way they could tell NMSU and USU, we tried to get you in but other schools said no.

UPET"s previous Prez retired last year after 31 years and Previous AD retired three years ago after 19 years, he also served as their Football HC in the late 80s for a couple of years. They both hated NMSU. Especially the Prez. She hated the fact local El Pasoens see NMSU as a better university to get an education at then UTEP.

Thanks. I did not know that part about El Pasoan thinking NMSU as the better school. I assumed they would rally around their hometown institution.

To be fair you are a land and space grant institution and the oldest university in NM

NMSU also offers in state tuition to those from El Paso.

A lot of high school kids in El Paso choose to attend NMSU instead of UTEP.

Something I have never understood and maybe you can shed some light,

NMSU,UTEP, UNM and Zona all have solid basketball support. What is about that corner of the country that loves that sport so much?

RE: For the NMSU fans: Conference Descrambler - NMSUPistolPete - 05-17-2020 06:36 PM

Yup, the competition between NMSU and UTEP goes beyond simply sports. They are fighting for scholastic talent and media (promotion) air time as well. NMSU is simply a more beautiful campus and a better college environment than UTEP's concrete jungle overlooking Juarez.

Lou Henson... Don Haskins... Bob King... and Lute Olsen. All considered basketball legends by their respective schools.

RE: For the NMSU fans: Conference Descrambler - CrimsonPhantom - 05-17-2020 07:04 PM

NMSU has Baseball, UPET doesn't. I believe one of Don Haskins Grandkids played baseball at NMSU. Also one of his kids played golf at NMSU.

Couldn’t have said it better.

UTEP with Juarez, MX in the background...

UTEP is not an ugly campus but there is not much shade between buildings and the surrounding area is not much to look at...
