Truly the dark ages of JMU hoops:

The sad thing reading this was not only how much they believed in Keener, but that Doherty was the “superstar” top coach they wanted to hire. His record was not good at FAU and SMU.

In other words, there was no great plan that just fell short. Plan A was every bit as awful as plan B turned out.

I liked Dean Keener. If you read the article you are reminded of the players he brought in that ultimately became some pretty solid players after Dean was gone. Brady got the reward for inheriting Pierre Curtis, et al. I sent my grandsons to Dean's summer camps and was extremely impressed with his teaching. I think he inherited a completely bare cupboard and struggled to turn it around quickly. I truly believe in time he would have.

My memory of Dustin Dopirak was that he was very good.

Jalloh got hurt right?

If I remember correctly(I was pretty young though) he had just ridiculously bad luck with injuries didn't he? Obviously at some point you've gotta move on instead of going "well so and so was injured for most of the year so we're gonna stick with it" but if I'm thinking right the injuries were a lot to deal with. Of course like I said I was pretty young, might remember it that way just because of being a young and optimistic fan making excuses for JMU.

Correct on the injuries. It was unreal.

I don't recall injuries being that much of a problem, but perhaps I'm just forgetting part of a rough era.

I remember injuries being a pretty big deal. I'm pretty sure every year one of the key players would go down with an injury at some point.

I remember most of the players being subpar for the CAA and thinking none was noticeably better than another. Maybe that's why I don't remember a key player going down.

The rash of major injuries/medical conditions were in Brady’s tenure, not Keener’s.

2009 Leading scorer from previous year guard Abdulai Jalloh missed all but 6 games shoulder surgery
2009 best player PF Juwan James missed 1/3 of games and then was on minutes restriction for heart problem. JMU still has its first winning season at 21-15 after 8 straight losing seasons

2010 starting PG Devon Moore misses whole season. Torn ACL.
2010 starting forward Andrey Semenov only plays 4 games. Back injury. JMU goes 13-20

2011 no major health problems JMU goes 21-12

2012 starting PF Rayshawn Goins misses whole season. Shoulder surgery. JMU goes 12-20

2013 starting forward Andrey Semenov misses all but 7 games. Ankle injury. JMU still goes to the NCAA tourney for the first time since 1994.

2014 no major health issues. This was the Andre Nation implosion year. JMU goes 11-20

2015 no major health issues. JMU goes 19-14 and ties for 1st in the CAA.

2016 no major health issues. JMU goes 21-11.

I think Keener had a recruit that never played due to a heart ailment, but there was no telling if he would have been any good. And he had a few smaller role players that missed parts of seasons like Coop and Kosseckpa due to balky knees. Maybe I’m missing somebody, but I don’t remember any major health issues to key players in his 4 years.

Thank you. Your accounting matches my recollection. I don’t know where the idea Keener’s teams suffered from injuries to major players. The rash of injuries were to MB teams. Keener was just a lousy coach. Maybe he’s better at selling insurance.

Bad luck with injuries is sometimes more than just "bad luck."

Davidson has a good hoops program, but has suffered from a run of injuries over the last 7 or so seasons.

The Cats have recruited players and stayed with them when they got injured in high school. Some had good careers, others showed flashes but then kept getting injured.

They would have missed out a few gems had they been more conservative in backing away from players with high school injury issues.

Having said that, a program's strength and conditioning program plays a role in preventing injuries as well. But i have never seen anyone say how you prevent torn ACLs and Davidson seems to have at least one every season. Its almost like major league pitching staffs and the number of players who have had Tommy John surgery.
