Los Angeles Bowl - MWC Tex - 02-26-2020 04:23 PM

https://themw.com/news/2020/2/25/football-sofi-stadium-and-hollywood-park-launch-la-bowl.aspx

It’s official. Date to be determined (hopefully after Christmas) but it’ll be the MW Champ vs PAC #5. An improvement from the LV Bowl.

RE: Los Angeles Bowl - Attackcoog - 02-26-2020 04:26 PM

lol....I guess I just lost track of "official bowl announcements" because I thought this was already official. I'd say this is probably the best G5 bowl (beyond the access bowl of course).

Yeah. It was announced but didn’t know the pecking order. I agree this is the best bowl outside of the Access Bowl.
Guess we’ll wait for the date and payout.

So the Sun and Redbox bowls got demoted.

Right. LA Bowl will be 5th in the Pac-12 bowl order after CFP/Rose, Alamo, Las Vegas, and Holiday.

The game will be played midweek because there will be an NFL game at the stadium on the weekend before and the weekend after, and they probably won't set the date until after the NFL schedules are released in mid-April. A good guess for the bowl date for this season is Dec. 23, 30, or 31. Jan. 2 is an outside possibility.

The MW is on a roll. Good TV deal. Boise St. placated. New stadiums built or soon to be built for CSU, San Diego Sate, UNLV and Hawaii... and now this bowl game in LA in a fantastic new stadium. Congrats.

That's a great get for the MW, the new LA stadiumand even a good one for the PAC. It's nice to match your #5 against the MW champ, if they aren't going to the access bowl.

The LA stadium is costing $5 Billion ... how is that possible when Jerry World cost less than a quarter of that?

because real estate/building is a hellava lot more in California than Texas.

What should they call it? Hollywood Bowl is taken. Angel Bowl?

Total homerun to get tie with the PAC #5 team for the MWC Champ (if not in an access bowl). This is better than anything the AAC has.

Sun dropping down to PAC #7 is interesting as it could be open if the PAC places two in a NY6 bowl. Though it doesn't seem as likely with the PAC not competing at the upper tier at the moment.

Partly inflation of costs. Partly that $5 billion includes the entire complex not just the stadium. Partly they had to dig very deep into the ground in order to have the overall height above ground be low enough to satisfy the FAA, because the stadium is directly in the LAX flight path. I suspect the last one is the biggest factor. They didn't initially anticipate how much it increased the cost to go that far below ground, and they may not have anticipated what the final height limit on the roof would be.

Actually a great pick-up to get the PAC 5th slot. Really diminishes the Sun bowl to 7th place. Looks like Sun will become an ACC vs G5 game. Would like to see MWC do a similar deal to fill slot if available. I would not mind to see ACC vs MWC since ACC already has two AaC tie-ins with Military and Boston.

RE: Los Angeles Bowl - ChrisLords - 02-27-2020 04:04 PM

That's a shame a out the Sun Bowl being bumped down. I really like that bowl being ACC vs. PAC12. However, if we could get a top MWC or AAC team vs. the ACC, that wouldn't be so bad.

Because this is basically a real estate project. There will be 900,000 square feet of retail space, 800,000 square feet of office space and 2,500 residential units. Add that to the earthquake standards that the stadium has to meet, access roads that need to be built or expanded and utilities, it is easy to see how it got to $5 billion.

I wonder if the LA Bowl is planning a bigger payout to get a 5th place PAC team?
The Sun paid $4.5 million and Redbox paid $3.6 million while the “old” LV Bowl paid $2.9 million.

So either the LA Bowl is putting a $5+ million Bowl payout or the Sun and Redbox lowered theirs.

Did PAC dump Cheeze It Bowl?

And as mentioned above, the Stadium required to dig down 100' below ground because of LAX

Hard for me to believe that digging up ground can cost billions. I mean, I have been in Jerry World, that thing is like a Star Wars Death Star. It's amazing that the LA stadium could cost upwards of 4x as much because of digging.

That was not the only factor. Earthquake reinforcement, higher costs in LA, stadium design (trying to one up Jones), development of a larger area, etc all played a part
