Who will be the 2020 WAC POTY? - NMSUPistolPete - 02-24-2020 09:32 PM

This week Seattle's Terrell Brown Jr. was awarded his third WAC player of the week. He leads the WAC in scoring. Is he the guy? Or, is the WAC POTY Milan Acquaah?

RE: Who will be the 2020 WAC POTY? - NeptunianEmp - 02-24-2020 09:45 PM

I would say it's between Brown and Rice.

Usually comes from the top team, so I'd guess Jabari Rice.

Rice or Ivan

I hope Ivan because he has been a monster during conference play. Rice can earn that the next 2 years.

A week ago I would have said Ivan. But teams have slowed him down a bit over the past few games. I think it is going to be Terrell Brown, Seattle version.

I think I'm with PP on this one. SU's Brown is Top 5 in conference scoring (#1), rebounding (#4), assists (#3), steals (#4), and A/TO ratio (#3). With Seattle finishing at CBU then home for UMKC and Chicago State, it's also not unthinkable that Seattle will be locking up the tournament 2 seed by season's end.

Good call. If Seattle gets the 2 seed, I think it's a forgone conclusion that TB (Sea) wins it.

Milan Acquaah does have a chance. Cal Baptist will most likely finish 2nd place in the WAC ahead of Seattle; with probably over 20 wins. Acquaah is in the top 10 in 6 categories... Scoring (#2), Assists (#2), FT% (#7), 3FGM (#4), A/TO ratio (#6), Defensive Rebounds (#8)

There is definitely a case to be made for both players, and I'm not sure the voters would necessarily be "wrong" either way. As much as it seems the better team's guy gets the nod, we have also seen that the player who is actually able to move forward into the WAC tournament and possibly NCAA gets to wear the POY crown.

Given CBU was middle of the pack last season, but Acquaah very legitimately could've gotten the award last season. The same can be said for Dewayne Russell three years ago. What those two have in common is there was no chance for their teams to participate or advance in any meaningful post-season tournament. Is it really a good look to have your league's POY and token "All-American" honorable mention sitting at home while the rest of the league is off having fun in Vegas?

I get that is just a random line of conspiracy-theory thinking for your Tuesday viewing pleasure. And before anyone gets all huffy about it, I 100% believe that Toolson and Baker earned and deserved the POY awards in those years. I suppose having multiple players performing at a high level across the league that allow for this kind of conversation is a nice problem to have.

The one year where Wendell McKines lead the league in scoring and rebounding but didn't win the award was a head scratcher.

If GCU had a better year, I think Carlos Johnson and/or Alessandro Lever would be in the conversation for POTY as well. I do think Jovan Blacksher will be the WAC Freshman of the Year.

Agreed on Blacksher, and maybe on the others. I think at least part of the reason those two (Johnson & Lever) are so productive, offensively, is because there really isn't anyone else to score for GCU. With the Lopes having such a short rotation, the guys you mention are 3 of the Top 5 minutes played in the conference. The other players in this POY conversation are up there in minutes played, too, but GCU might be the most dependent on those two guys' getting buckets every single night than other teams.

It will come down to Acquaah and Brown. Acquaah is 2nd in scoring and 2nd in assists and CBU is 2nd in the WAC. Brown leads the conference in scoring and is 3rd in assists and Seattle is in 3rd in the conference. It is tight. They are both really important to their teams.

If CBU beats UVU and Seattle this week at home, CBU clinches 2nd place in the WAC. That would get them to 21 wins. If Acquaah plays well in both games, I think he probably wins it. In a three game stretch back in late November, CBU played South Dakota (19-11) at home, losing by one point, beat UCR (15-14) at home, 79-67 and beat UCI (19-10) on the road, 68-60. In those three games, Acquaah averaged 29 points per game, 7 rebounds per game and 5 assists per game. UCI is in first place in the Big West. I thought it was a good three game stretch against good competition.

If Seattle beats CBU this week and Brown plays well in that game, that could give Brown the edge. Seattle does not have a quality win on their schedule. Their best win was against Western Michigan, with a Net ranking of 242. Seattle has not beaten a team with a winning record this season, for what that is worth.

For NMSU, is it tough to compare stats with other WAC players. NMSU dominance is a team effort. And, all Aggie starters would be stars on other WAC teams.

I just can't see not having Trev Queen on 1st or 2nd team. Also, swap Ivan and Davis. You can't have only one guy 1st team from a 16-0 team. Isiah White should not be 2nd team either.

I think Queen is one of the top 5 players in the WAC. However, his injury caused him to sit out games. And, since his return, his WAC stats have dropped off. All his impressive stats were front loaded in the OOC schedule.

I also think Aurrecochea is the most complete big man (offense and defense) in the WAC but Dejon Davis leads the WAC in rebounding by a wide margin (9.9 rpg). As of late, he has been putting up eye popping numbers; posting 21 points & 16 rebounds against Utah Valley; and 31 points & 15 rebounds against Seattle U; and being selected WAC Player of the Week for last week's performance.

Good stuff Pistol. I agree with all of this and your predictions except for one. Croy will win Coach of the Year. Voters get tired of picking the same guy or team every year. I think that is why McKines did not get POY his senior year. And since CBU cannot participate in WACt or the NCAA's, I feel like the voters will throw a couple bones their way. They had a darn good season for a recent D1 move up.

Exactly, no matter how good these other guys stats look like. I would never trade 1 of our starting 5 for anyone.

Croy will win COY? LMBO!! PP green arrow is very wrong. What Jans has done with his injury ridden team is next to miraculous. 16-0. It will be unanimous. Don't have a meltdown cause I don't agree with you on this one. I agree with you a lot but you are way off on this one.
