Men Win CAA SWIM Championships - bubbadog57 - 02-23-2020 07:15 AM

Congratulations are due to first year Head Coach Nate Kellogg and the Tribe mens swim team for winning a sixth consecutive CAA crown yesterday by almost a hundred point despite again forfeiting the diving event points.

The team won 14 gold medals in the 18 events; led by All-American senior Colin Wright won, for the second consecutive year, won seven events to bring his W&M career total to 24. He has qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet with Top Ten times nationally in both the 50 and 100 freestyle..plus a provisional qualification in the 200 freestyle.

Coach Kellogg was named CAA Coach of the Year.

The women finished second in the ladies CAA meet.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but here me out. Maybe just maybe we should spend some of the BILLION dollars raised from the For The Bold Campaign and build these guys a natatorium to hang all of our championship banners in. Maybe the alum that owns 20% of the Dodgers has some loose change under his couch???

You should email the AD about that.

The Tribe mens' swimming program is the most amazing story in Tribe athletics this year. Interesting thing about swimming (similar in this respect to track & field) is that it is a purely objective sport, with no subjectivity; so times can be compared on an apples-to-apples basis.
The best time that the Tribe men swam in winning the 200 free relay (1:17.19) would have placed them 4th at the SEC Championships, which were also this past weekend. It would have beaten LSU, Kentucky, Georgia, Auburn, South Carolina, & Missouri all of whom swam their fastest, tapered times of the year.
All these SEC programs have multi-million dollar facilities, highly-paid coaches and a full complement of athletic scholarships.
William & Mary, in case you didn't know, practices in a tiny pool in the basement of the Rec Center, has no team locker room, and NO athletic scholarships.
What's more, Tribe senior Colin Wright (CAA Swimmer of the year), swam an 18.98 in the 50 freestyle, currently the fastest time in the NCAA -- which would have won the SEC, where the winner went a 19.07!

That is especially true considering that the natatorium was listed on the "wish list" when the billion dollar campaign was first announced. Who knows how many people gave a few bucks with that in mind and now are told that the college has changed their priorities?

Even earlier, several years ago, I mentioned actually spending some of the billion dollar endowment on necessary athletic endeavors and some poster made a snide comment to the effect of: "do you know what an endowment is?". So, some people just like having a lot of money but never actually spending any of it.

The women would have also won the CAA Swimming Championship if we had a diving team. Since the scoring appears to be like track & field where every place in the standings order gives different points, then why not have some swimmers do rudimentary dives, finish in 7th or 8th place, and still pick up enough points to perhaps put W&M over the top?

A recent Tribe article about swimming mentioned that the NCAA record for one particular dive is held by a male W&M swimmer from the sixties. So, where did he practice? At Blow Gym -- okay, that is gone. At Adair? At a community pool? Drive down to Newport News or Hampton a couple of times a week? C'mon AD folks, think about it. It can be done!

As stated before, there is no regional natatorium that I am aware of. Williamsburg is a major tourist destination with hotel infrastructure to host major tournaments. College and city should team up to build something that works as a competitive pool to host Tribe meets, national tournaments as well as for the citizens as a community pool.

Your point stands on its own, but some of our out-of-state swimmers receive partial scholarships.

This is simply not true. The men’s swim team receives no scholarship money for in or out-of-state swimmers.

Okay, our former swim coach, during a conversation with me, must've been incorrect. During our conversation, coach discussed women swimmers so maybe it's a Title IX thing.

Update: My hypothesis was spot on.

Per VA Pilot - Crispino: "The limitations are such that W&M doesn't compete in the diving portion of meets, making its CAA championships all the more impressive. There is no scholarship money for the men's team and two in-state equivalencies for the women, 12 shy of the NCAA maximum."

You are correct, women’s swimming has a very limited amount of scholarship money available, the men have no scholarship money.

Six consecutive CAA championships? How many more are in the program’s future?
