LAX - Tribal - 02-19-2020 08:40 PM

Women's Lacrosse picks up it's first win on the year tonight at home against cross-town rivals Old Dominion 11-4!!! Belle Martire scored 3 times, bringing her total to 12 to start 2020. Meredith Hughes & Caroline Donovan scored twice each for the Green & Gold in the victory. https://t.co/SUaT7aEz6f

Congratulations to Belle Martire for being named CAA WLAX Co-Player of the Week!

Ms Martire is a star but the team, with a new coach in her first season and inheriting little in talented players,
is not good at all.

Sorry, but there is more to the story. The previous coach, Hillary Fratzke, resigned in order to spend more time with her family. Whether that was really the reason or whether that is athletic department spin-speak to say that she got fired is unknown to me (although I guess the latter). However, even though the upperclassmen might not be that good, Fratzke had an excellent crop of freshmen last year (which is why I was surprised at her departure). Belle Martire was 2nd Team All-CAA (as a rookie!) and Starr Howard and Lauren Russell both joined her on the all-Rookie team. So the new coach, Colleen Dawson, did inherit some good players as building blocks for future growth. Furthermore, I see that Lauren Russell is still on the roster but she has not accumulated any stats for the year yet --- which seems to indicate an injury. So naturally that makes it harder for the coach if one of her three top youngsters is out.

I think that it is still too early to say that they are "not good at all". They still have 9 regular season games left including all of their conference season. If Russell comes back and other players step up then maybe they can turn it around.

I think that's usually done as more of a spin for the coaches, so they don't have to say they got fired. We've fired a few coaches, I don't think the AD cares about the spin from their side (And we also haven't been overly competitive in women's lax for a while, so it's not like anyone would have revolted if the coach was fired).
