How would you rank the 4 JMU NC game football teams? - Dukester - 01-15-2020 02:19 PM

If they played each other who would be best?

2004 - National Champions 13-2
2016 - National Champions 14-1
2017 - Runner up 14-1
2019 - Runner up 14-2

Will be interesting to see other's thoughts. I could see different thoughts on this one.

Agree with this, but could see 2004 a little lower if trying to rank them on talent in a head-to-head matchup.

Our recent teams have more raw talent, but that 2004 squad got the job done against the odds and with a lot less infrastructure and support. They made everything that followed possible. This year and 2017 were years where we had enough pieces to win, but fell just short due to small mistakes in execution and coaching.

Cig gets an A- from me this year. They need to do a bit more prep work next year for the title game, which I believe we will be in again. There are less than 5 teams in my opinion that will be serious contenders and could derail us.

I'd give Curt a B+. It's hard for me to give an A rating for the most stacked JMU team not winning the NC.

If they were in a 4 team tournament - here's how I would seed them

1) 2016 NC - they were rolling in the playoffs
2) 2017 Runner up- a drop away from perfection
3) 2019 Runner up - Had the horses, but did not get it done
4) 2014 NC - Most cherished/enjoyable ride through the playoffs, but everything had to and did fall right. Soo many close games......

I almost put the 2004 team as 3 or 4......but hey they won the title so had to put them above the runner up teams.

If based solely on the NC game, I might agree.

The reason I give higher marks is he also brought in players (like Polk and Palmer) to fill key holes and coaches that fixed the OL and run game. I’m basing my grade on the season as a whole.

A year ago we had a team that couldn’t run the ball well or protect the QB long enough for them to be effective. We lost 4 games with nearly the same players in large part due to that.

Those two glaring issues were fixed big time, which also improved our pass game. I give coach a lot of credit for that. In game clock management and a few other things do still need work, which is why there is still room for improvement.

The 04 team were overachievers. They stole our hearts. We'd never had much of a sniff of the championship game. If not for that bunch of misfits, we are not among the top of FCS today. You punch those young men in the mouth and they simply ask for more. There's never been a more taped up bunch to don the purple and gold. While they might not have been the most talented team we've ever fielded none have had more heart. They played old school football and my favorite to watch.

That o line at seasons end was something to behold. If you can win an NC with Mickey dictating the play calling, you are one talented o line.

I am with Dukester on this one. My order is the same as his,

Had the 2019 team won Saturday, they would be my #1 followed by 2016. The only reason 2016 gets my first place vote is because they won in Fargo and won the NC. The 2017 team was probably a little bit better and would have beaten NDSU by multiple scores without so many drops, turnovers and mental mistakes. There were so many blunders that day.

If we’re talking best season I’d say easily 2016, 2004, 2017, 2019. A championship is always better than no championship.

If we’re talking you magically bring back all four teams and have them play each other as they were at the end of the season it gets really difficult to rank. I’d probably say 2016, 2017, 2019, 2004 but could easily understand a lot of shuffling those around.

I would rank them 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2004. I actually feel bad about not ranking 2004 higher.

2004 will always be my favorite-there were so many good story lines on that team. Their early struggles as underclassmen, the unexpected rise to prominence, the QB battle, Clayton's dual accidents, eeking out close playoff wins etc. They just seemed like a really cohesive group of likeable guys. Plus, it was our 1st title.

Ultimately though, I ranked them 4th because I honestly felt Delaware was measurably better than us that year. I remember being thrilled that W&M knocked off UD and we didn't have to play them again. I never felt in '16, '17 or '19 that any other FCS team was better than our squad (though there were some I thought could beat us).
