CFB-150 Top Players of All Time - Hokie Mark - 01-13-2020 11:01 PM
They released the top 11 players during halftime of the national championship, and we might as well address the elephant-sized orange in the room...
1-Jim Brown
2-Herschel Walker
3-Bo Jackson
4-Archie Griffin
5-Jim Thorpe
6-Red Grange
7-Earl Campbell
8-Dick Butkus
9-Barry Sanders
10-Gale Sayers
11-Roger Staubach
First of all, I'm proud of Syracuse for getting the most votes for their man... but if I'm team captain and I'm picking my running back, I'm not taking Jim Brown... nor Herschel Walker, nor Bo Jackson, Archie Griffin, Jim Thorpe, or Red Grange either... I'll think about Earl Campbell for a moment, but then I'll come to my senses and pick BARRY SANDERS. No disrespect to those other guys, but... Barry was just other-worldly! You couldn't catch that guy playing touch in a phone booth!*
* for those of you too young to know what that is, it's like a small closet with a land-line phone in it... if you don't know what THAT is, I can't help you.

I respect that. Herschel was dominant (like Brown, only against better defenses). I'm basing a lot of my opinion on what the Walker and Sanders did in the NFL, against the very best defenders. Walker did ok, but Sanders was still dominant...

Herschel never had a proper NFL career, thanks to his stint in the USFL. He gained ungodly gobs of yardage there, and then when he came to the bad Cowboys teams of the late 80s, he was treated more as combined RB/WR than a straight runner, then later as a kick returner.
Still, despite that, he gained over 8,000 NFL rushing yards and caught over 500 passes. He also had over 5,000 kick return yards. All told he had almost 18,000 total yards in 12 NFL seasons.

Deion Sanders, Derek Brooks, Fred Bilitnikof, Warrick Dunn, Charlie Ward made the list. What’s ironic is that some of these guys are arguably the 2nd or 3rd best at their position at FSU. I’d put Ron Sellers and Peter Warrick ahead of Fred B. Marvin Jones ahead of Derek Brooks, Chris Weinke and Jameis Winston ahead of Charlie Ward. Dalvin Cook ahead of Warrick Dunn.
However, I do respect that many of these players revolutionized the way the game was played like Fred B, Charlie Ward and Warrick Dunn. They really were the standard that everyone else got measured by at that time. Deion is still still the standard bearer for CBs, perhaps the only other CB since that enters the same conversation as the GOAT at that position is Charles Woodson.

Sanders rushed for 2,053 yards in the 1997 season alone - while playing for a team with basically nothing else on offense.
Sanders rushed for 1,500 or more yards 5 times, including 4 years in a row.
In 1997, he set an NFL record by rushing for at least 100 yards in 14 consecutive games and became only the third player to reach 2,000 yards in a single season.
The fact that he did all this on an otherwise bad Detroit Lions team just makes it that much more impressive.

I think you misunderstood. I wasn't comparing Walker to Sanders. Someone said Walker did "OK" in the NFL. Actually he was way better than just OK.
As for the topics of this thread, while Sanders had the single best season a college RB has ever had, and maybe the best season any player has ever had (Sanders 1988 vs Burrow 2019 is a good debate), he only had that one year whereas Herschel had 3 great years at UGA so should be higher than Sanders on a college football list.
