Hofstra - geewizNU - 01-09-2020 06:28 PM

NU hosts Hofstra in a big early conference matchup on CBS Sports Network.

IMO, if NU wins the rebounding battle, take care of the ball and keep Buie from having a big game, we should win. All three are very doable.

A win keeps NU in pace with Charleston. A loss puts a monkey wrench in any top seed plans.

A horrific 1st half. Came out nowhere near ready to match Hofstra's intensity and now have dug a huge hole and going to Charleston to take a 3rd straight L most likely.

At this point, I feel like should we think about red-shirting Murphy. They don't make these kids like they used to

Hofstra leads 40-24. In the last minute, you got unfair treatment by the shot clock after Jalen Ray missed the first of a 1-and-1. Watching live, I guessed that the shot clock wasn't reset after you rebounded his miss. Looking at the play-by-play, the shot clock was reset to 20, which happens after an offensive rebound, kicked ball, or defensive non-shooting foul, but this was a change of possession and you should have been given a 30 second shot clock. Hofstra called timeout, they reviewed something, nothing changed, and the announcers didn't notice that the shot clock wasn't reset to 30. I wonder what Coach Coen noticed. Neither team scored after that, and there's no guarantee you would have scored with a 30 second shot clock, but I still think the referees and announcers should be embarrassed. My Mom said that not reseting the shot clock to 30 and not noticing it is inexcusable because it's easy to know what the difference between the game clock and shot clock should be in the last minute.

Eli Pemberton scored 12. Isaac Kante scored 11 without a miss including the only three-point play. Desure Buie had a slow start but scored 5 in the last 4:22 to reach 9. Jalen Ray scored 8. Tareq Coburn, who averages 10.9, attempted 1 shot and did not score. Hofstra's three bench players didn't score either. Kante led all players with 6 rebounds, and Buie and Walters were tied for the most assists with 3. Brace led you in points with 7 and rebounds with 5, so he's on pace for a double-double. He didn't miss. Walker, Boursiquot, and Strong scored 4 each. The last two shot 2-3, but Walker shot 2-8. Roland shot 1-5 and had 3 points, 1 rebound, and no assists. You had more than double in the mistakes categories as fouls were 9 to 4 and turnovers were 11 to 5. In addition to his poor shooting, Walker had no assists and 3 turnovers. If you knew how poorly your top two scorers were going to play, you would have expected to trail at halftime.

Great fight from the guys. Another stomach punch at the end. Got to stop digging huge holes in the first half, though

It must be rare for the losing to team to have a player score more in the second half than any player on the winning team scored in the game and for the winning team to have only four scorers. Hofstra's lowest scorer other than 0 was Jalen Ray with 12. Hofstra's scorers shot field goals 30-48 (.625) and free throws 10-13 (.769). Their non-scorers shot 0-6 with no free throw attempts. Hofstra's non-scorers had more combined fouls (4) and turnovers (1 for a sum of 5) than combined points (0), rebounds (3), assists (0), blocks (0), and steals (1 for a sum of 4). Making 8 of 11 threes is amazing, but Roland made 1 of 6 twos, and if he made 2 of 6 you might have won. Brace was arguably better as he had 18 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and made 6 of 8 field goals with the only misses being threes. Boursiquot was good. Walker shot 5-15 and had 4 turnovers and 4 fouls. You continued to shoot free throws well at 7-8, but your 8 attempts were well below your average of 13.75.

It will be hard to win the regular season title, but you could still win at Hofstra and/or win the CAA Tournament. If you lose at Charleston, you'll be 3-3, but you'll be 6-3 if you follow that with wins at UNCW and hosting Drexel and Delaware. Anything worse than 6-3 could give you a battle to get one of the top four seeds because games 10 through 12 are at William & Mary, Elon, and Hofstra. Elon was okay in a 73-65 loss hosting Charleston. Charleston made and attempted 17 more free throws.

In close games like this.....or W&M...... it comes down to lucky bounces. Let's see who can develop their players between now and the tourney and who is going to get hot for three days straight. Seems like it's wide open.

Another tough loss at home in the final seconds.

NU won the rebounding battle, but their 14 turnovers lead to 16 Hoffy points (NU had just 7 of HU TO's) and Buie hit some clutch, albeit some lucky bounces.

They had to know Pemberton was going to his left. He made those layups all night.

I think Tyson got caught up in the moment going up against Hofstra, the team from his backyard and Buie. He settled down in the 2nd half.

Brace had a solid game, but he missed a 3-point play opportunity late and missed the 1st free throw. He also got stripped on the break and missed a wide open 3 that would have put us up 2 with under :30 left.
