No Deal In Sight Between Comcast And ACCN - Hallcity - 01-02-2020 09:53 AM

I can't get behind the paywall but I guess the headline tells the story, Pitt AD Lyke Doubtful ACCN, Comcast Reach Deal For '20 Football.

If you are a Comcast customer who has been putting off making a change in your provider because you thought that Comcast and ACCN would soon come to terms, it's time to make the switch.

TBH, that's just reason #17 to switch from Comcast...

(don't ask me to list the first 16 - I pulled a number out of the air!)

1) Comcast by default shares your internet connection with other customers .... a great idea if you think random people should have access to your network.
2) Comcast is gougy af
3) Comcast throttles your traffic
4) Comcast has traffic caps
5) Comcast will actively issue connection resets if it thinks you're torrenting ... even if your torrents are perfectly legal (Linux releases, etc)
6) Comcast has a massive lobbying arm and generally gets what they want from Congress without regard to how it effects you. They spent $18.8m lobbying in 2013, good for 7th largest lobbyist in the country. They employ several former members of Congress as lobbyists.
7) Comcast makes the internet extra gougy if you don't bundle TV with it
8) Comcast engaged in deliberate anti-competitive practices avoiding markets where other cables were operating ... so that later they could purchase and merge with them without any duplicity
9) Comcast is consistently among the most hated companies among consumers in the country
10) Comcast created the XFINITY brand just to confuse the consumer and try to ditch their name because they so heavily sullied it
11) Comcast will offer you non-publicized bundle offers if you call to cancel ... if you were such an important customer, why didn't you get that chance from the jump?
12) Comcast is against net neutrality and would prefer to charge websites a premium to get higher speed access to "their customers"
13) Comcast's parent company is NBC Universal ... and NBC's news division is home of such blatant awful homerism I'd rather watch Finebaum on the SECN after an Alabama NC than one minute of a NBC news telecast
14) Comcast has been called "The Worst Company In America" by The Consumerist ..... TWICE
15) Comcast successfully lobbied in multiple states including SC and TN and 18 other states to have municipal broadband made illegal at the state level after some munis like Chattanooga got so fed up they rolled out their own broadband service
16) Do you realize how f'n evil and how many Scrooge McDuck dollars you have to horde to be able to make attempt to buyout Disney wholesale? Let's just stop for a moment and marinate in how Disney has completely changed all of college athletics ... mostly for the worst in exchange for filthy lucre. Comcast gouges so many customers every month they can just flippantly make a $54 billion dollar bid to buy Disney.

It is important when it comes to the viability of the ACC Network, so it is still concerning, terrible service notwithstanding.

This is correct.

It certainly hurts revenues too.

You can blame Swofford or Comcast or ESPN or whomever you want for this but it's not an isolated problem. There are many, many disputes between carriers and content providers. It was probably inevitable that the ACCN would be at least one major holdout.

We know that there will be an end to this problem -- when Comcast has to renew its general contract with Disney. Until then, Comcast customers can solve the problem for themselves by ditching Comcast in favor of a better carrier.

And, by the way, look out for carriage problems for the RSNs now that Sinclair owns them.

I switched from Comcast to Verizon so I can watch ACC network. Verizon has a barebone sports package which only have few but major cable channels and most sports channels. Very suitable to my need.

I believe the current contract is through the end of 2021. Current deal is a ten year deal signed January 4, 2012. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-comcast-disney/comcast-disney-ink-10-year-carriage-deal-for-tv-web-idUSTRE8031UC20120104 Unfortunately, that's two more football seasons that will be missed.

However, when the contract does expire, unlike Sinclair, ESPN has enormous leverage to use in negotiations due to the popularity of its networks, including the ESPN networks, ABC affiliates, and the Disney Channel.

RE: No Deal In Sight Between Comcast And ACCN - georgia_tech_swagger - 01-03-2020 02:13 PM

If Comcast holds out then Comcast should be asked to pay significantly more to carry the ACCN. They should not only have inflationary adjustments but also pre-inflated inflationary adjustments leaning into the new contract window. And then some gravy on top of that.

It's an existential battle between the two with a single family member having effective control over Comcast - hence ego.
