How many times has JMU defeated the #1 ranked team? - Longhorn - 12-29-2019 01:56 AM

I can think of three games where JMU has beaten the current #1 ranked team. Have there been others?

ASU (2008) the “comeback”
W&M (2009?) the “no completed pass” game
SHSU (2016) the “blowout”

I put a question mark around the W&M year only because I was too lazy to confirm the actual year (I’m sure BDK has the correct season), but W&M was ranked #1 coming into BFS, if only for one week before losing to JMU.

...and of course JMU will add NDSU to this list on 1.11.20, but I was curious if the Dukes have defeated other #1 ranked teams (rankings current as of the time JMU played them).

I recall winning at #1 UNH about 15 years ago.

Obviously won at #1 NDSU.

In 2016? I’m sure they must of been! So Jan. 11 will be the second time JMU has done it. 04-cheers

W&M was ranked #1 in the no completed pass game back in 2009 or whatever year that was. Was an interesting game to say the least. D. Scott certainly had himself a game!!

I was thinking the Richmond game in 2008 was #1 vs. #2 one way or the other but after looking it up I see it was #1 JMU at #5 Richmond.

SHSU is a little tricky, they may have been 1 in one of the polls but they ended up getting the 5 seed. Idk if i'd group them with the other teams. Reminds me of a kennesaw situation where they were highly over ranked

I understand your point, but seeding isn’t ranking. SHSU was still #1 in the published polls when JMU demolished them.

Yes but I believe everyone and their mother knew that team was over ranked. Cant say the same for the other ones

Again, not debating that point. You could say the same about being overrated about several teams ranked #1 at the time JMU beat them (like W&M). This is a simple question asking who were the #1 ranked opponents at the time JMU defeated them, regular season or playoffs.

W&M's schedule says they were Number 1 in one poll and Number 2 in another poll going into that game on November 13, 2010.

JMU advertised that home game as versus #5 Sam Houston. Only SHSU fans thought they were ranked #1. I've always seen the playoff seeds as the ranking that overrides the polls myself.

Soft Houston might think we knocked them off as #1, but most of us didn't feel that way at the time. We just thought we were shutting the idiots up.

2006 @ #1 UNH. Surprised you forgot that one. UNH had already knocked off Big 10 Northwestern by 17. Kept David Ball from breaking Jerry Rice’s I-AA career TD record until the following week vs RU. Ricky Santos won the Payton that year.

Its either JMU beat #1 SHSU/#2 NDSU, or beat #5 SHSU/#1 NDSU. IMHOP its the latter.

IMHOP seeds take precedence over polls. The multiple polls aren’t even updated during the playoffs. During the playoffs the top 8 everyone goes by seeds. No one pays attention to the polls. In 2016 JMU won @ #1 NDSU, not #2 NDSU.

2006 UNH
2008 ASU
2010 W&M
2016 NDSU

What was Montana ranked before the championship game in 2004?

RE: How many times has JMU defeated the #1 ranked team? - HMK - 12-29-2019 01:57 PM

In 1985 we beat Georgia Southern 21- 6 in Harrisonburg. It was the first time JMU played them and the only time out of 8 meetings Georgia Southern was ranked Number 1 in the Nation at the time of the game. Georgia Southern went on to win the National Championship.

They were #7, and were also 12-2 going into the finals.
