Collegiate Baseball Releases First of 2020 Preseason Polls - waltgreenberg - 12-16-2019 09:28 AM

No, of course we're not in it, and I don't give much credence to the Collegiate Baseball poll, which tends to heavily favor the P5 programs, but here are the teams we play next year in the Top 40...

#3 Texas Tech, #21 A&M, #22 UT, #24 ULaLa, #35 UH, #37 UC-Irvine, #40 FAU

Are you suggesting that we deserve to be a pre-season top 40 team?

We showed no ability to pitch in Fall Ball. The run totals we gave up were astronomical. Our offense should be able to keep us in some games but I'm not convinced we'll have a better team than last year.

Of course not. I have made it very clear that I think that 2020 will be another year of struggle for Rice Baseball. I think we the potential to have our best offense in 5+ years, assuming Combs in cleared to play by the NCAA, but we have virtually no front line pitching. Our only hope is if Roel Garcia comes back healthy (though he's unlikely to be at full strength until mid-March) and improves both his control and consistency. JUCO Leon is a solid college Sunday starter who will be our Friday night starter instead. There are also a couple Freshmen with potential, but heading into the season this will be our worst pitching staff on paper in a couple decades.

Why would Combs need to be cleared? He played two years at Kentucky (one year he played in 12 games, the other was a redshirt), and then had one season at Walters State. He was on the SEC academic honor roll both of his years at Kentucky. You'd think from that bio he would be good to go at Rice this year.

From what I understand it's a credit issue. No question he's a bright kid with excellent grades in both high school and college. The NCAA has been evaluating his situation since September. It's why he was forced to be held out of the two exhibition scrimmages this Fall, though he did play in intrasquads....and he has been enrolled and taking classes at Rice.

WE've got a couple Top 200 prospects in next year's class, along with a couple Top 200 position players (C, OF).

FINALLY some baseball talk!!! Very much looking forward to the upcoming season. Regarding recruiting good pitching (at Rice in particular), I would like to see the staff recruit good to really good pitchers and develop them into great pitchers by their Junior seasons. If you can get a really good development pipeline going you should have solid pitching every year. Obviously from my previous posts most here are aware this is where I think Rice could excel given the right tools and correctly applied training resulting from the acquired data. Getting Rhapsodo is a huge step in the right direction. Next step would be Trackman (or even better Hawkeye) installed at Reckling for in game data collection.

Re: D1Baseball Preseason 2020 Top 25.

Only 2 Texas teams. No UT, TCU, Baylor, DBU or, of course, Rice.

Interesting times. Looking forward to the season and a demonstrable improvement for the Owls over last season. Winning season? 30 wins?

I’ll be at Reckling for the opening series against The Evil Empire and hope to make all 3 games against TT in Lubbock in early March. That should be a good one. Tech has become the team to beat in Texas. Just hope there isn’t a blue norther sometime during that series. In Lubbock at that time of the year, you never know.

Also, only 1 non-P5 program on the list. Somehow, I don't think the final standings will be like that. Last year's final D1baseball poll had 5 non-P5 programs. I couldn't find a 2018 D1baseball final ranking, but Collegiate Baseball had 9 non-P5 programs in its final top 25 poll, and Baseball America had 6 non-P5 programs.

Is this just a lack of imagination on their part this year, or is the divide truly becoming bigger and bigger?

Years and years of TV money trickled down to baseball programs at P5 schools. Resistance is futile.

Heard a couple guys quit this week. Hate to lose players with the season right around the corner.

Anyone know if this has happened this close to the season in past years? Also, curious as to who the players are but do not want anyone to reveal something that was provided in confidence. I guess we could look at the roster and figure it out by year to year comparison.

If true, must not yet be reflected in the roster, as the only one now missing is Soph LHP Deskin (who has yet to find the strike zone).

I still see Deskins on there. Only name missing so far as I can tell is Ben Content, sophomore righthander who pitched 4 innings last year.
