Rachel Maddow Faces Slapdown by UC Linguistics Professor in Defamation Suit - CrimsonPhantom - 12-03-2019 08:14 PM Quote:If Rachel Maddow loses her $10 million defamation case brought by the owner of San Diego-based One America News Network, she can blame, in part, a UC Santa Barbara linguistics professor. Link They claim immunity on the grounds of "lack of intent", and yet constantly claim that the president is willfully an asset of Russia. The words, 'Really literally' actually mean, 'not really and not literally'? That is the actual defense. Even more hilarious is that the OTHER part of the defense is that OAN IS REALLY LITERALLY an agent of Russia They are simultaneously arguing that they didn't mean it really literally, but they actually DO mean it, really literally RE: Rachel Maddow Faces Slapdown by UC Linguistics Professor in Defamation Suit - bullet - 12-03-2019 09:31 PM I do hope she gets nailed. Its time to hold the Democrats and Dem media to the same standards normal people face. RE: Rachel Maddow Faces Slapdown by UC Linguistics Professor in Defamation Suit - dfarr - 12-03-2019 09:34 PM She shoulda gone with the Twinkie defense instead RE: Rachel Maddow Faces Slapdown by UC Linguistics Professor in Defamation Suit - Redwingtom - 08-18-2021 06:05 AM Not only did Maddow "win" when this original suit was tossed in May of 2020, but OAN has now been ordered to pay MSNBC/Maddow nearly $250,000 (and perhaps more) in legal fees after losing another appeal. Quote:After MSNBC and Maddow later asked for the right-wing channel to pay $350,000 in legal fees, the court permanently dismissed the case this past February and awarded MSNBC and Maddow a total of $247,667.50.OAN Loses Appeal Against Maddow, Must Pay MSNBC at Least $250,000 RE: Rachel Maddow Faces Slapdown by UC Linguistics Professor in Defamation Suit - stinkfist - 08-18-2021 06:30 AM literally = figuratively in today’s upside down ‘murica… RE: Rachel Maddow Faces Slapdown by UC Linguistics Professor in Defamation Suit - MemTigers1998 - 08-18-2021 07:29 AM In fairness, her viewers, no matter how few there are, REALLY are some of the most gullible, stupid and naive people walking this Earth. LITERALLY. Wonder if Maddow still stands up to pee. Of course RE: Rachel Maddow Faces Slapdown by UC Linguistics Professor in Defamation Suit - Eldonabe - 08-18-2021 09:21 AM If you strip away who and what and just look at the facts I think you can come to a reasonable and common sense conclusion. - Person A hosts a television show. The show is a news and opinion based format. - Person A makes a statement about person/company B. The factual nature of the statement is debatable. - Within the statement made, Person A uses the word "literally" as a descriptor in the statement. QUESTIONS: What does the word "literally" mean? Was use of the word stated as matter of fact or within a rhetorical statement? Does the nature of the comment even matter - meaning was it an opinion of the speaker or a report of an actual news event by the speaker? The speaker (as previously noted) has presented this statement on a television show with a viewership of people: whom can be reasonably assumed to listen to and believe the statements of the speaker. If the speaker's statement is not factual, but it is presented by the speaker as factual and further accentuated with specific word(s) as emphasis - the speaker should be accountable (liable) if that statement is actually proven to be false: The speaker does have some influence over persons who then repeat this non factual statement as factual (based on the original speakers statement). Use of the word "literally" is akin to using the word "allegedly". "Allegedly" allows for plausible deniability and room for interpretation ("one might have done it"); while the word "Literally" is a pretty rock solid assertion of truth to the statement - ("One did it").
