Kent State vs. Detroit Mercy - fallsdog - 12-02-2019 03:15 PM

The Golden Flashes host the 1-5 Titans on Tuesday with tip off set for 7PM. Mercy is coming off consecutive losses to Ohio University (91-81) and ULA Lafayette (81-62).

The 1 - 5 record is somewhat deceiving as they have a win over UC Urvine on the docket as well as losses to NC State, Wyoming and Clemson.

The player to watch is 6'1 sophomore guard Antoine Davis who has put up 30 or more in each of the last two ball games. Nobody on the roster is listed as taller than 6'8 but they do have a 6'6 senior, Justin Miller, who is listed at 270 pounds.

Should be a nice test for the good guys. I'll go with the Flashes:

Kent State 77
Detroit 67

I am really enjoying this team and how Sendy is working with different line-ups. Should be a fun MAC season.

Up 6 at half.....the men’s team!

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit Mercy - Slinkin Street Flash - 12-03-2019 08:55 PM

Pippen finishes with 18 points, 11 rebounds, 7 blocks; also tied with Booman for the team lead in assists with 5; Kent State 92-Detroit ask for Mercy 57

Damn, they hung 56 on them in the 2nd half. Even against a bad team that is impressive.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit Mercy - anti-zip - 12-03-2019 09:30 PM

We beat John Calipari's son by 35 tonight!!

2 Freshman bigs don't play in a 35-point blowout???

It was a little concerning that Rob kept the starters in for so long. Specifically Pippen and his knees. The freshmen or at least Beck should have gotten some more minutes. We will need them to give us some big minutes when Whittington gets in trouble.

I have no information, but I assumed that was him sending a message because he's not liking what he's seeing in practice from individuals.

like we should be surprised. Every year the rotation shrinks, he rides the same 7-8 guys hard their legs get shot and by the critical 3 days in March we hit with a thud because we're gassed! Rob is coaching for his 20 wins contract extention with the hope that someday he'll get the heck out of here.

IF you noticed last night I believe pippen's first 5-6 shots were all short hitting front rim. So maybe he's already feeling it.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit Mercy - ksu315 - 12-04-2019 08:58 AM

Seems to me that 2 of the 3 of Bainbridge, Bennett and Castillo should maybe have been reshirted.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit Mercy - anti-zip - 12-04-2019 11:24 AM

Pippen's averaging 27.9 mpg in 8 games. Simons the only player averaging over 30 mpg and he's at 30.1. I really don't think we have a problem with load management at this point. The more likely explanation for lack of minutes for the young bigs last night is Detroit is a small team so it wasn't a great matchup for bigs who aren't currently playing well.

As for Pippen already being gassed he had 18 pts, 11 rebs, 5 asts, and 7 blks last night. So hopefully we can get more guys as tired as he is.

A point of interest. We played against two coaches sons last night. John Calipari and the coach Mike Davis. Hmmmmm Number zero is Mike Davis son who is the star of the team.

This is laughable. Rob isn't coaching to get to a number. The guy retools year after year and we are still pretty good year after year. We won the MAC tourney just a few years ago. Yes Akron and UB have had repeated success in recent years, but Akron has fallen off and UB doesn't seem to be far behind IMO. Bottom line is most teams in the country usually have a solid 7-8 man rotation. Some may play 9 but if you get into giving more players minutes, it's hard for kids to get into a nice flow. Not only that, maybe he already thinks some of those kids aren't going to make it or he made a mistake and he wants to invest in others development. That's just how it works.

Now, if you want to just try to make a point about last night, up 30 and getting more kids some burn, I am ok with that.

Not to mention the 20-win rollover clause is no longer in Rob’s contract. If you want to take shots at a coach whose team is 7-1 you might want to make sure your facts are in order.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit Mercy - axeme - 12-04-2019 02:25 PM

I have total confidence that Coach knows a whole lot more about how much and why to play players than any of we fans do. Things go on in practice, games, and off the court that fans know very little about that inform the staff about players readiness and ability to play in particular situations. Seems to me we have the best coach in the MAC. He and his staff obviously know what they’re doing. I think this team is being brought along really well from what I can tell, not knowing the inside details.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit Mercy - ksu315 - 12-04-2019 02:38 PM

Let me clarify all in all I like Rob and think he has done a very good job with the situation he has been dealt. however my issues are:

- Our non-conference schedule has been very poor for years and I don't understand that strategy there. hiram, concord, IPFW, Stetson and Detroit. all extremely bad. yes wright state and towson are good wins but this schedule is bad and has been this way for years.

- maybe its just the mid major model or mac model but we rely so much on the guards and 3 pointers that come those 3 days in march that's not likely sustainable to win 3 in 3 games. Whittington is our true only low post option and he seems to be an officials target for foul trouble. So why not spend some minutes or even sacrifice a loss here or there in non-conference to try and see if one of these young bigs can give you 8-12 minutes a night.

RE: Kent State vs. Detroit Mercy - GFlash68 - 12-04-2019 03:10 PM

The 2nd half of the Detroit game showed what this team can be on any given night. They are quickly becoming a run paced team with constant pressure on defense. The players on the floor must be able to play that game. It looks like we have some players on the bench that may not be able to contribute to that pace. Most of your successful teams are playing this way and the 3 shot is allowing good shooting, less athletic teams to compete and upset so called better teams. I think that Sendy sees this and is not as concerned about bigs as some of you are. I may be wrong here, but anyway, our team is very interesting and I like them.

I agree. Do you know if he gets a bonus for 20 though.

I too am liking this team. I’ve been fooled before by non-conference schedules though. Can’t wait until Conference play. Then we will really know.
