Interesting trivia tidbit: Longest Field Goal ever - MWC Tex - 11-26-2019 12:12 PM

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ove_Johansson

Abilene Christian place kicker Ove Johansson still holds the longest field goal made in organized football. 69 yards.
ACU was a member of the NAIA at the time.

I didn’t know this since a lot of the of the focus has been on the NFL and NCAA. He is currently living here in Amarillo, TX.

That was back when the kicker could use a "Tee", so I assumed he did so?

IMO, we have to distinguish "Tee" records from off-the-ground records, but this is fascinating trivia. Thanks!

It was definitely off a block. You can see the holders hand resting on it before the snap.

I’m not sure if kicking off a block is giving anyone more distance than kicking off the ground. Definitely makes for a better hold though.

The tee does help you kick higher and farther. It's a big help all around.

It's basically for the same physics reasons that a PGA golfer can hit farther off the tee than he can off the ground with the same driver.

Did he get kicked out of school because his kick distance was the naughty number?

Texas, Texas a&m and Arkansas all had kickers doing over 60 yards. At that time

Those 3 still have 5 of top 6 in fbs

It changes the position at which the kicker’s foot (or head of the club) strikes the ball, which gives more loft. More loft translates directly to greater distance because the ball has to fall further on a given trajectory.

I simply like the name Ove ... in large part due to the excellent 2015 Swedish film A Man Called Ove.

Getting loft right at the point of impact makes it easier to get the kick over the defensive line, which is key for the very longest field goal attempts, because on those kicks you don't want too much arc, you want maximum horizontal vector on the kick and only just as much vertical as necessary to avoid a blocked kick.

NFL stats 1-4 FG and 1-3 PAT. Sounds like that injury in the bowl game was a factor in that.

Last time I drove by that stadium I told my wife about that FG.
(Although I was under apparently false impression that it was more significantly wind-aided)

Those NFL stats are similar to those of Russell Erxleben, the Texas kicker who was drafted in the first round in 1979 and later went to jail for financial fraud. He was like 3 of 6 in his NFL 'career' as a kicker, because like Ove, he just could not kick off the ground anywhere like he could off a tee.

The Saints, of course. One of the most stunningly incompetent 1st-round draft decisions made by any NFL franchise.

Kevin Butler who kicked for Georgia (1981-’84) and then for 13 year in the NFL, has stated that the use of a “block” for field goals (not the same thing as the tee used for kick-offs) makes a huge difference on long-distance field goals. In his final college game — Citrus Bowl against Florida State — the game was tied at 17 when he attempted a 70-yard FG on the last play of the game. The kick was true but fell short by about 1 yard.

I’m not sure exactly when the NCAA changed the rule to make FG and XP attempts off the ground, but it was very shortly after Butler’s career ended.

Yeah, its a block but i just call it a T because its easier for me, lol.

But yes, a block helps a lot with distance not just height.

89-worried about rising %s more than distance
https://www.thecrimson.com/article/1989/9/22/no-more-tee-time-for-college-kickers/
"...In 1969, collegiate kickers converted 47.7 percent of their kicks, including 61.7 percent from inside 40 yards and 24.7 percent outside 40 yards. By 1987, those percentages had jumped to a whopping 67.1 percent successful kicks, including 80.2 percent inside 40 yards and 47.1 percent outside 40 yards.

The secretary of the NCAA football committee, Dave Nelson of the University of Delaware, notes that the intent of the rule change is to bring an end to the near-automatic nature of placements and make coaches think twice about going for field goals or extra points. ..."
