Interesting trivia tidbit: Longest Field Goal ever - MWC Tex - 11-26-2019 12:12 PM

Abilene Christian place kicker Ove Johansson still holds the longest field goal made in organized football. 69 yards.
ACU was a member of the NAIA at the time.
I didn’t know this since a lot of the of the focus has been on the NFL and NCAA. He is currently living here in Amarillo, TX.

It was definitely off a block. You can see the holders hand resting on it before the snap.
I’m not sure if kicking off a block is giving anyone more distance than kicking off the ground. Definitely makes for a better hold though.

The tee does help you kick higher and farther. It's a big help all around.
It's basically for the same physics reasons that a PGA golfer can hit farther off the tee than he can off the ground with the same driver.

Getting loft right at the point of impact makes it easier to get the kick over the defensive line, which is key for the very longest field goal attempts, because on those kicks you don't want too much arc, you want maximum horizontal vector on the kick and only just as much vertical as necessary to avoid a blocked kick.

Last time I drove by that stadium I told my wife about that FG.
(Although I was under apparently false impression that it was more significantly wind-aided)

Those NFL stats are similar to those of Russell Erxleben, the Texas kicker who was drafted in the first round in 1979 and later went to jail for financial fraud. He was like 3 of 6 in his NFL 'career' as a kicker, because like Ove, he just could not kick off the ground anywhere like he could off a tee.

Yeah, its a block but i just call it a T because its easier for me, lol.
But yes, a block helps a lot with distance not just height.
