W&M Football: 2019 Report Card - WMSportsBlog - 11-25-2019 08:24 PM

With W&M's season having just wrapped up, and with a Capital Cup secured (but no playoff berth), we've gone ahead and assigned grades for all three phases of the Tribe's 2019 team: Offense, Defense, and Special Teams.

Lots of potential moving forward with this young group, but a lot of holes to fill on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Cheers to another great recruiting class, and taking another step forward next year!

Check out the below for a year-over-year stat analysis/comparison and grades.

Roll Tribe Roll.

I don't know if I'd give the offense an A-. They'd certainly win a "most improved" award, and it's the best offense we've seen since the Cluley years, but certainly not what would earn an A- if we're looking beyond a few year period. The future is definitely bright for the offense though (and other phases of the ball too).

You give the Offense an "A", the Defense a "B-", and Special Teams a "B". Well, if that is an indication of the grading curve now at W&M, then I attended in the wrong generation.

With grades like that, I would expect at least a winning record, maybe even a playoff appearance.

You admit yourselves that the defense "regressed". So how do they merit a B-? A regression would seem to indicate a grade to the worse of a "C". I also don't think that the Offense deserves an "A" when the offense that you are comparing it to (last year's) stunk to epic proportions (at least by the standards that we had become accustomed to).

So, bottom line for me, the whole conversation can be summed up by saying that my feelings for 2020 are "hopeful". But we better get better on defense and Mathis better gain some touch on his deep passes!

Watching Mathis in the fourth quarter and overtime of the Richmond game should give us all a big lift and real hope for the future. He really was a quarterback in every sense of the word for those 20+ minutes.

The only reason I wouldn't give the offense an A- is because they get an F in a couple of games. Reality is that Mathis, when healthy is a beast and with more accuracy he will be awesome.

Defense gets a C. Too many points allowed

Special teams gets an A on kick off coverage and kick returns. A+ for blocked kicks. Punting gets a B with Eberle in the game. Kicking still gets a F since we missed more than we attempted (9-19)

I don't think we can miss more than we attempt, but I get your meaning.

Must be counting in the ones we didn't attempt because we knew we would miss.

Offense C. We basically ran 3 different plays most games. 30 yard pass. Read run. Read keep. If the other teams stacked the box we were done.
Defense C-. Can't get over the fact how much talent we returned from a pretty good defense and how far they fell.
Special Teams B. Kick blocks and returns were As. Place kicking F. The rest B to B-.

We were 5-7. Hard to have anything higher than a C for a 5-7 team.
