2019-2020 Big East Games Thread - GoldenWarrior11 - 11-17-2019 10:09 AM

Instead of creating a new thread every day (or every week), why don't we just keep all of the commentary of BE games in one place throughout the season?

Good slate of games yesterday. Five of the six BE teams won by double digits (Villanova, DePaul, Providence, Butler and Creighton), with St. John's losing a tough one to Vermont. Vermont, on the surface, is not a "bad" loss by any means, as the Catamounts have been a tournament team two of the past three years and return much of their team from last year.

Today, there are two really tough road games as Marquette travels to Wisconsin and Seton Hall travels to Saint Louis. Georgetown doesn't have any easy one either as Georgia State comes to town. Would love to be 3-0 after the day, but 2-1 would be just fine to take entering the week.

Standings as of 11/17
DePaul 5-0
Butler 4-0
#21 Xavier 4-0
Marquette 2-0
Providence 3-1
St. John's 3-1
#10 Villanova 2-1
#12 Seton Hall 2-1
Creighton 2-1
Georgetown 2-1

Total: 29-6 (.829%)

This is a helpful approach. I like it.

And an 83 percent win rate is strong (even though, admittedly, the season is very young).

lots of huge games these next 2-3 weeks with all the exempt tournaments and a lot of Big 12 games....

RE: 2019-2020 Big East Games Thread - GoldenWarrior11 - 11-17-2019 11:42 AM

I guess we can also add UConn/#15 Florida for the slate today.

Marquette lucky they exit this week 1-1.

Georgetown struggled in the first half but then won comfortably.

Marquette faced what apparently is a strong Wisconsin team.

BE is No. 5 in Sagarin Ratings, ahead of Pac-12 and behind SEC (which I feel is off to a somewhat rocky start).

SEC at least still has 7 undefeated teams left and only 9 losses so far. 36-9 so far.. Big East is 31-7. Pretty close to the same.

Good stats. I did not know. For the SEC, some of its top teams (Auburn and Florida, for example) have had various "close calls," thus my "rocky start" observation.

No Big East games today. Providence returns to action tomorrow against Merrimack.

Marquette struggled badly at Wisconsin yesterday (which seems par for the course, as Wojo always seems to have one big clunker against a B1G team annually). We couldn't rebound, we couldn't keep them out of the paint, we couldn't get into the paint, they made their shots, we couldn't make our's, and we once again shoot ourselves in the foot with the same types of turnovers again and again. It's nice to see McEwen establish himself as a solid #2 option behind Howard, but Bailey and/or Anim desperately need to become a third scoring threat (outside of John). Both of them had terrible games yesterday, which was another reason the score wasn't close late.

I laugh at some of our Marquette fans that argue (and will continue to argue after every loss this year) that having the Hausers would have made the difference. The Hausers would have brought shooting, yes, but we are much longer and quicker now on defense, and can switch with several guys now (which wasn't the case last year). It also fails to consider each of the players that would have transferred had both Joey and Sam stayed.

I like the makeup of this year's squad, and although it was a bad loss, I think they learn from it and will be just fine.

It helps when you have 14 teams.... Also for Auburn- 2 of them were on the road or neutral... SEC in really good shape....

With Big East having 7 losses already- these next 2 weeks are huge. All these exempt tournaments. And some other pretty big games.

you got what you needed this week a split.

Exempt tourney is huge for Marquette. Davidson, USC, and then Maryland if things go well.. Don't have to win- but need to go at least 2-1. The Davidson game is huge from a SOS perspective- win and you get USC and then Maryland or Texas A&M or Harvard.... lose and you're looking at Fairfield and then Temple or Texas A&M or Harvard. Plus need to have some good wins away from home for the committee..

It would be amazing for Wojo get to face Buzz. I'm already excited for Saturday with our uniform selection. Wasn't digging the all-blacks yesterday.

It was a response to Bucky having a White out. Nice in theory, but the baby blue lines with yellow numbers just did not mesh well. I would have just gone with a black jersey with white lettering and numbers (maybe a yellow line).

I've always liked that we dramatically change our unis every few years. Some work, some don't - but it is definitely a throwback to Al's days.

This weekend pretty big as well.... Friday vs Mississippi St and Sunday vs Baylor.... After this weekend, only OOC game road neutral left that are meaningful is just @ Temple. Won't impact making tourney most likely- but for seeding...

I'm just happy Ewing decided to stick with the players actually contributing to the offense. First several games the pull a kid right when they are gaining momentum style of substitution was really frustrating.
