Do we want a separate thread for the out of conference records like in previous seasons?

Question for the experts on scheduling rules:

Is there some reason Dixie State apparently didn't schedule any DI teams, not even for exhibitions? You'd think they'd want to gain some experience in preparation for November 2020.

I say "yes". I'm just posting the weekly schedule so we can discuss the up coming games and results. I think there should still be a thread that tallies up the records of the WAC's successes and failures against the other conferences; like last season.

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - Trod0 - 11-04-2019 07:50 PM

Looks like the WAC has a real shot of going undefeated after opening day. ?

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - NMSUPistolPete - 11-04-2019 10:15 PM

The toughest opening season game is UTRGV at South Dakota State. The rest of the conference has cupcake games at home.

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - edinburger - 11-05-2019 11:16 PM

Not a good night for the WAC so far.

South Dakota 70, UTRGV 53
Davenport (NAIA?) 82, GCU 73
CBU trading leads with Jackson State

Good Luck everyone this WAC Season. Going to enjoy it. Just one game GCU

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - DoubleRSU - 11-07-2019 10:56 AM

Technically, the GCU loss doesn’t hurt because it doesn’t count. Won’t hurt the computer numbers and no WAC team is getting an at-large bid anyway.

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - FINALFOUR1970SWEETSIXTEEN1992 - 11-07-2019 12:14 PM

GCU loss doesn't hurt but it's still pretty embarrassing and concerning.

Totally agree that it is embarrassing and concerning. Ironically it did not seem to phase the KenPom results though. GCU actually went up from the preseason ranking of 131 to 127. Go figure! Perhaps we should lose a few more games to DII competition.

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - DoubleRSU - 11-07-2019 05:37 PM

D2 games do not count in computer numbers and it’s only embarrassing to GCU fans. GCU could run the table and this loss would be forgotten. Except to talk smack. Chicago State and KC are more embarrassing than GCU losing to Davenport

I preface this with a huge YES I completely agree it’s a bad loss and we are hanging our heads still. I fully expect we will be reminded all season about it. But after taking 48 hours to calm down and get through all the stages of fandom grief... here are some thoughts.

If you take away the fact that they were a recent NAIA transitioning to D II program, they are a solid squad . Granted, they shouldn’t be beating D I programs, but the beauty of basketball is that on any given night five scrappy underdogs can rise up and shock the world. Hence, March Madness is so much fun.

Watching the clips from NSU and Illinois, I think Davenport was superior to Nichols. Davenport is used to winning; top 10 in their Division, coming off of a 27-4 year. I think DU would’ve beaten Nichols 9 out of 10 games. I think Davenport Would’ve given many teams a run for their money: any team that hits 15 three pointers is channeling some awesome old school Sega Genesis NBA Jam He’s on FIRE level energy. So no... I’m not giving up on the Lopes just yet.

I’m going to reserve full judgement until after we get past Illinois, UNI, and SDSU, and play a few more of the scrub teams. If we can’t get it together by then, the Paradise Jam is going to be anything but paradise.

In closing, YES I know I’m trying to put lipstick on a pig. But seriously... even awesome teams suffer a ridiculous upset once in a while, and most don’t let it define the entire season. We have 29 more games. Let’s see this team’s character reveal itself over the next couple games.

If we start 0-8, I may call Fidelity and Janus and sell my LOPE stock (down nearly 4 points to just over 88 bucks a share). Gotta love being able to give a literal NASDAQ value to that otherwise colloquial cliche

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - NMSUPistolPete - 11-07-2019 11:23 PM

Washington State routed Seattle U. tonight 85-54. A disappointing performance. Hopefully, NMSU will have a more competitive game with WSU when they travel to Pullman later this season.

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - FINALFOUR1970SWEETSIXTEEN1992 - 11-08-2019 10:19 AM

Seattle isn't that good of a basketball team. They will be down this year.

RE: WAC Basketball week 1 - NMSUPistolPete - 11-09-2019 12:23 AM

Illinois was too big and strong for GCU. Lever fouls out midway through 2nd half. GCU loses 71-83. Cal Baptist beats up on Cal Lutheran 112-56. Acquaah stands out with 27 point and 7 assists. And, Dixie State beats Texas A&M Commerce 71-66.
